  1. he did a lousy job on a pair of my Lone Wolfs a couple years back. Told me he was going to put on new deadstock Cat's Paw (like they originally had) when I picked them up he replaced the heel with some generic brand and put a thin piece of rubber over the worn original Cat's Paw that came with the shoe. His finishing was horrible too, didn't trim the edges down and he put a nail through to the footbed.

If you want metal tips go to the Leather Spa on 55th. You'll pay $50+ and wait 4 weeks but they were the ONLY shoe repair place in the city I could find to do them (correctly) and they will also recess them into the leather if it's a double leather sole or if you get rubber fronts recess them into the rubber so it doesn't through off the evenness of the sole.

East Village Shoe Repair on St. Marks, Boris just did my Red Wings. He knows his shit, don't be discouraged by shop's looks.
  2. Unfortunately it seems that not even Levi's themselves can accurately pinpoint when details changed, honestly I trust the collectors in Japan more often than Levi's. I think a lot of the time now people are using details that they have seen replicated on various LVC models from different collections and different countries as guides to how true vintage Levi's from that time period looked and we all know the errors there.

I don't disagree that there are a handfuls of cross over detailed pairs out there however I would guess by the later 30's that Levi's would have gained control over the consistency of it's product (consistency is the goal of any business, right?) with maybe an exception made during the war.

Lastly, in all of my years of buying/selling/watching/searching out vintage Levi's I can't recall seeing an offset beltloop on a pre mid 50's leather patch pair of Levi's, I have only ever seen this detail on the "every garment.." paper patch.....if you have images of a pair with this detail I would love to see them!!

    Airfrog...by the 40's, it was a COIN POCKET. ;)

In my experience, it's very difficult to 'nail down' certain aspects of original levis, for there are many 'cross-overs' (probably due to the many factories making Levis back then).

The off-set belt-loop, for example appears on models made directly after the war too, but documentation only points to the later part of the 1950's-early '60's.

Coincidently, my favorite vintage levis were from that time frame ('57-'64), with those details (Lots of yellow stitching, offset belt-loop, selvedge in coin pocket, disappearance of hidden rivets.. etc)

IMHO, the disappearance of the 'Guarantee' on the two horse card patch, marks the end to true vintage 501's.

    .

  3. initially i thought the disappearance of the selvedge coin pocket coincided with the short lived offset rear belt loop and "every garment guarenteed" paper patch of the mid 50's and very early 60's and reappeared when the belt loop meet was centered again and the patch lost the "every garment..." but recently I found a pair with the leather patch, centered belt loop, pre1950 extended outseam stitch, without selvedge in the coin pocket. Maybe a factory blunder???

    HH

Not necessarily, as I have had two pairs of early sixties big E 501xx, one pair with hidden rivets, one pair without, but both with no selvedge in the coin pocket.

My Lvc 551zxx have no selvedge in the coin pocket too.

All the info I have points to late fifties, but I'm open to debate !

    .:)

  4. Couple months old....Chapman/Good Wear made Rough Wear 27752. Gave the jacket a warm water rinse a couple weeks back and it really tightened up and the grain of the HH really came out.....

Couldn't be happier..totally worth the almost 8 month wait.

  5. gotta love the fact that 90% of this thread is about LVC sizing issues.

"So if I am a (insert size) in (insert APC model) what size should I buy in (insert LVC 1947)??"

    OR

So I just bought (insert LVC 1947 or if we are lucky an earlier model) how much can I expect these to (insert stretch or shrink) compared to my (insert APC model)??

checking this thread for updates can be a real bummer.

  8. Doesn't look like any of the Anatomica models I have seen. Moulded Shoe in new york who seem to be the only store in the US able to get custom cordovan builds on the modified last (???...Alden claim Japan has exclusive rights to cordovan modified shoes/boots) had these exact make ups in the store a number of months back. Could be an irregular from that Moulded run or from any number of Japanese (Beams, Tomorrowland, Lakota House) stores building on this last.

Thanks. They were actually irregulars purchased from shoe mart, but I've been unable to find any info as to who they were designed for. Anatomica is probably as good a guess as any.

cloeslawyum - thanks for the additional pic. The leather is a very nice color; I may have to order a pair.

  9. brannock device had me measured at an 11. i wear a 9.5 c/e or a 10 b/d in Alden comfortably.

ANY shoe store should have one of these.....they just might not know it's called a Brannock Device. Save your $50 and look around.

thats it, im buying a brannock device to measure my feet and then order my first pair of aldens. I dont like the idea to shell out 350+ dollars for a boot that might not fit + there are no shops around here that have that device.

Turntabloid, did you win the lotto or something? Maybe we should combine orders or does that not matter much for customs? How much import tax does germany charge for leather shoes? I believe its 13% in Belgium.

shoes that are on my to-cop list:

    - regular Alden Indy (or ultimate)

    - Alden Black AF89 - Alden of Carmel

    - Alden PBT color8 cordovan crepe sole - Leather Soul

    - Whites Hathorn Northwest

shit, i need a second job (and a third one)
