  1. More sizing insanity...

I'm posting again because I've been talking with History Preservation for the past few days (although I still haven't talked to Charles) and my head hurts. I posted above that I'm leaning toward a 29 because I wear 29 in everything else. I was asked to take a tape measure to my waist. It comes out to 30.5". I call back History Preservation and they tell me to get a 30 or 31. I know I'm not a 31. So here are the two scenarios I'm thinking of:

    A) A 29 will measure 30.5" out of the box (exactly my waist size). I've decided to get the unwashed. I will stretch them out as I wear them and then wash them for the first time in a few months. I will wash every few months after. The stretching will compensate for the shrinkage and they will still fit me perfectly.

    B) A 30 will measure 31.5" out of the box. This is way too big, but I can soak them if I want. If they shrink an inch, they will be 30.5" and fit me perfect. I can wear them and wash them whenever I want. If they shrink all the way down to 30", I can easily stretch them out a half inch whereas the 29 will probably be too small.

Which is the most likely scenario? I'm still leaning toward the 29, but History Preservation seems to be pretty sure that this is too small for me. Since they don't normally carry a 29, I will not be able to return the jeans if I buy them.

  2. Can I get some sizing help? I've read all the threads and it looks like I should go with my gut, but I just want to make sure. I have 3 pairs of Nudie Regular Ralf: dry selvage (29), authentic deluxe (29), and some older really worn in model (30). None of them are tight, and they all fit me really well. I have a pair of raw Dior in 28 that are snug and comfortable. I have a pair of raw Acne Mics that are a 29 and also snug and comfortable. I tried on a pair of very distressed LVC '47s in 29 and they were a little tight, but still okay. They were also heavily treated and never worn, so I'm sure they would stretch if I bought them.

I'm waiting to speak with Charles at History Preservation, but I spoke with a woman who works there today. She said that Sugarcanes will eventually shrink to 1" less than their marked size. So a 29 will ultimately measure 28". Even my often washed size 29 Nudies measure over 30" in the waist.

My gut says I should get the 29 Sugarcanes. Not the 30. Do you guys agree? I plan to buy the one-wash, btw.

  3. The $750 45rpms use natural dyes and are distressed. You can get the same pair of jeans in a raw one-wash, using synthetic dyes, for $333. The distressing is really nice: very understated, with a very natural-looking gradiant between darks and lights. Otherwise, I prefer the raw for less than half the price.

  4. I just picked up my 21cm yesterday. I'm into them. It's definitely not the style I usually wear, so it's kind of a breakthrough for me. There's no taper. They are 100% straight. They are low rise. You wear them extra long so they bunch up around your ankle. The quality seems decent, but the fabric is not typical denim. They almost feel like a hybrid. They're dry, but these do not seem like the kind of jeans that you wear and wear for months to break in before you finally wash. They're not soft or stiff. They're just right. There's nothing to break in. They are very different from the type of jeans that people usually discuss on this board.

To the people who already own a pair: What kind of sneakers are you wearing? I wore them with my adidas 5 plugs (http://store1.yimg.com/I/harputsadidas_1863_7623494) and they looked pretty good, but I'm looking for something else. Besides black chucks!

    You mean him, Hedi Slimane.

H-Lan jeans are fine as well, beautiful slim cut.

To the guy starting the thread, how long were your jeans? And, did they have them in size 31-32? icon_smile_approve.gif

They're all a 38" length. I probably got them hemmed to about 36". The salespeople convinced me to wear them long, so I'll see. I can always get them hemmed again.

Could you post some pics of them, if possible?

I'm looking for a pair of black raw denim and I'd love to see what they're like....

I'll see what I can do, but right now they're being hemmed, so I won't have them until next week.
  7. Update: I went back today. Sometimes, I can't get something out of my head, and then it's all over. I was originally going to get a pair of APCs, but they're not that much different from the other raw denim I own. I think it's the black with black stiching, as well as the cut, that got me.

I tried on both the Japanese and UK jeans in a 29. Last time, this seemed to be my size, but I thought I should try the 28 just in case. They only had them in the UK denim. I tried them on and the fit was just a little better. I went back and forth between the UK 28 and the Japanese 29. I always liked the material on the pair that I was wearing at the time. The UK version is more of a solid black. It almost looks more formal. In the end, the fit of the 28 made me take them. Plus, I saved $50. The salespeople were useless. They had nothing to say about the different denims: nothing about how the material stretches, fades, creases, nothing.

They cost $240. To be honest, if you would have asked me to guess the price of a pair of raw Dior jeans, I would say about $350. Because they're Dior. Because they're always really goddamn expensive. $240 is a fine price. You'll never see them for $180.

  8. I never thought of looking at Dior Homme jeans until I began reading this forum. Yesterday, I stopped into the store to check them out. The salesperson who helped me didn't know shit, but that's besides the point. Although the details on some of their distressed jeans are impressive, I was there to check out their raw offerings.

I have to say, I'm intrigued. I'm not normally one for jeans so thin, but they fit well, and that counts the more than anything. I'm also not into black denim, but combined with the black stiching, they're very nice. Side by side, their raw blue jeans with yellow stiching looked like a toy.

A few surprises: No selvage. I just assumed that they were, especially since the denim is from Japan. No big deal, but I was surprised. And this brings me to my next point: Last season's denim is from Japan, this season's is from England. Is this so? The Japanese denim, in my opinion, is much nicer. It's a little slubby and has much more character. They had one pair left in my size. The Fall 2005 collection uses their new UK denim, which looks extremely manufactured to me: very little character, no imperfections. The weight seemed to be about the same. I was also surprised at the prices. I can't remember the exact numbers, but the Japanese jeans were about $290 and the UK jeans were $240 or $250. I could be off, but that's about right. I thought they'd be more. Add to that, if this true, their jeans just came down in price. It strikes me as odd.

Can anyone speak to the difference between this season's and last season's jeans and the difference between the two denims? How durable are they? I see these mentioned often here. Is that for the fit and the black denim with black stiching? Is there something else I'm missing? They look good, but otherwise the quality seems to be about average.

  9. Nice photo essay, Chad.

I have a 2 year old pair of authentic deluxe. They come out of the factory with a high level of contrast, but it's only become more and more pronounced over the years.

I like my dry selvage and this other, lighter wash (which they don't make anymore) the most. Otherwise, authentic deluxe is probably my favorite of the current washes, and I still wear them all the time. There's a reason why it's been a part of their line this long.

  10. Hamilton makes a great watch for the price. This is especially true for the watches in the Khaki collection that are based off of classic pilot designs. Another great Hamilton option is an old military issue watch. You can usually find the 46374B on ebay or an online watch dealer in pristine condition for under $150. The movement is only 7 jewels, but they're cool little watches. They have a radiation symbol on the dial and "Dispose Rad Waste" engraved on the caseback because the markers were painted with tritium to make them glow. Here's a pic:

My dream watch is an IWC Mark XII. For now, I wear (and love) my black Omega Seamaster Pro:
