  1. Hara Museum is beautiful. Watarium. Shashin (photo) museum in ebisu.

Ohta museum (it's like behind muji / shima and harajuku) if you are into ye olde japanese ukiyoe art.

Teien bijyutsukan. Though not a museum, shinjuku gyoen is also pretty cool.

The museums in Ueno. I haven't been in a long time but i remember they are pretty decent.

    1) Kanda - bookshops, outdoor shops, curry
    2) Akihabara - yodobashi;

    3) Ueno - museums, mita sneakers

    4) Nippori - Nezu and sendagi shops, there's a craft beer bar that I like, shaved ice at himitsudo if it's a weekday

These areas are all connected (they look far apart on a map but they aren't) so I'd walk.

As far as cool popup art shows, i don't really know of a central place. Maybe timeout is one (I don't really read it bc I mostly read Japanese sites). I usually check the cool-guy japanese fashion news sites for gallery openings and etc e.g. houynhm

  2. i think all airbnb in tokyo are considered illegal except for those in Ota-ward.

Even the properties in Ota-ward aren't exactly free-for-all. there are strict rules a property must adhere to.

i forgot the exact rules. the gas supply for an airbnb property must be independent of the main feeder line for an apartment complex?

it's nearly impossible for someone to run one off of an existing apartment complex, unless you own it.

it's not like the visitors will be penalized. it's the airbnb hosts who are at risk for eviction and etc.

i'm curious about the mainland-owned rooms in those new highrises that have been purchased for the sole reason of renting out on airbnb/homeaway.

there's also been a recent article in one of the newspapers about the increasing number of complaints filed for airbnb visitors. you know, the oh-so-typical gaijins having crazy parties.

it sounds like some people who just have nothing better to do, try to pinpoint airbnb properties based on images and report to the apartment management companies.

i'm all for the "shared economy" but i suppose hosts should be more selective as to who to host and etc.

i have good ratings that i can do instabook on a lot of properties.

  3. This is how much I've drunk alone over the past 1.5 years at my shack.

That pink label Ethiopian from Heart was good. Verve isn't that great. The LA shop is pretty underwhelming too.

  4. i bought like two bags of heart a month ago. the beans i had bought from coava before that batch were far superior, i felt like.

what's your favorite roaster? i'm not talking about those microroasters that give you like 3 oz of beans at a time.

i'm talking about larger but not blown up roasters.

    Some beans I particularly liked:

    - Coava

    - The Barn (Berlin)

    - Sightglass (though this one is really a hit or miss; some are like really weird)

  5. yeah, veilance needs to make some lightweight packable down jacket.

i have no choice but to cop a 450 dollar stone island one. i'm actually content with my uniqlo one but it's super thin and not warm at all.

i feel like no "cool guy" company makes ultralight downs, except maybe stone island.

  6. prob said it before but oasis meta modern is the best "session ipa" i've ever had.

i was in nyc this past weekend and went to other half on saturday afternoon for a couple releases. i got several 4-packs of citra and make it rain (their collab with barrier). other half ipas are some of the best i've tried in a while.

i think i keep getting slow ride instead of meta modern. meta modern is the purple one...i vaguely recall.

tried some beer from fredericksburg at WF this weekend. ok. they were lagers. i guess black lagers are pretty big now.

i like sours but not gose. got "southern hopsitality". not good. i saw a JK called SIMPLE and figlet. didn't get it but i figured it wasn't worth the time and $ anyway.

yes, i do agree with the discussion on IPAs. most of them now taste more or less the same.

also, got a tallboy of molotov lite by evil twin. we'll see.

  7. Are you able to find a site/social media for Katim?

Is it saying Steven Alan is carrying the first collection?

The article said Steven Alan already made an agreement to become a stockist. Looks like the brand had popup shops at some of the "IT" department stores and select shops already.

  8. hey, does anyone have onset recommendations for around Kyoto or Osaka.

Not planning to stay in an Onsen hotel overnight, just for a few hours during the day kind of thing.

    Thanks

    like?

  9. i've never even heard of stillwater. i haven't tried the darker beers by evil twin. i'm a fan of session beers with interesting background tastes. there's one evil twin one that comes in a four-pack with a yellow package. it's some sort of session IPA. that one is very good.

    i do miss terrapin though.

  10. a bit more subtle than the grapefruit, but definitely tasty. really want to try the watermelon dorado.

it's a good beer but can't believe a sixer is like 15+ dollars.

kinda tired of jester king now. i just drink yellow rose (if it's available), live oak hefe, or evil twin.

    evil twin vvv good
