    Magpie Gallery and Boutique presents:

    BEYOND THE RABBIT HOLE

Work by Matt Haber and Imran Sheikh

Curated and Press Release by: Chako Suzuki

A common theme running through many English Victorian stories and art is children and their esacpe to a secret space. Lewis Carroll presented an iconic example of this in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland when Alice falls into the rabbit hole leading to Wonderland,a fantastical world where the role of adults is questioned and the terrain is unpredictable. Artists Matt Haber and Imran Sheikh create a secret space of their own with Alice as their muse.

Magpie and curator Chako Suzuki invite you to wander beyond the rabbit hole with Alice to see what's on the other side. Opening night reception for Beyond the Rabbit Hole will be on Saturday, May 1 from 7:00 until 11:00 pm, and is absolutely free (afterwards, head on over to the Whistlestop Bar for a drink with friends)! Magpie is located at 2205 Fern St. in South Park, San Diego. There will be artwork and great vintage clothes and accessories to buy, so gather your funds (credit cards and cash accepted). The show will run until June 1, 2004.

Cutie-pie artist couple, David and Meegan Cuzick mulled over of the idea of opening a hybrid gallery and boutique for over a year. Lots of brainstorming, buying, and hammering later, Magpie was born - its moniker a twist on Meegan's name and an ode to their fascination with birds. David built up the space and Meegan lovingly plucks each vintage item for the store to make visiting Magpie an experience and not just a shopping trip.

Matt Haber's work exists in the conjunction of make-believe and reality. He pairs the imagination of a child with the experiences of an emotionally-mature adult to create images sweet, sad, and moving. The characters in his paintings and drawings are actors on a stage. Their actions, through role-reversal, show a broad range of human experiences unusual to these subjects. He is intrigued at how reversing roles can increase the appearance of human experience and unveil new feelings and narratives. Each of his pieces is a small story revolving around a larger one, which is constantly being realized through a series of image making. Matt Haber, a San Diego native, is 27 years old and lives and works in Los Angeles, California. His studies at RISD and experience at Walt Disney Animation have shaped his storytelling insight and colorful style. He is currently exhibiting in a group show at CPOP Gallery In Detroit. See more at www.glassesareshields.com.

When Imran Sheikh was a child, he was told that drawing was a sin. Being a Muslim, he's had to wrestle with this fact for a long time. After getting through school and sticking to his passion for art, he was accepted into the College for Creative Studies. He has been busy writing his senior thesis - a graphic novel based on his lucid dreams including two twin girls and a fisherman, and has already had a successful senior show. He is currently working as art director at the ad agency, Campbell Ewald, and will walk for his graduation this year. Imran Sheikh is 23 and was born and raised in Detroit. He is living and working in Farmington Hills, Michigan. See more at www.sheikhdesigns.com.

  2. My friend, Mike P wanted me to tell y'all about his upcoming art show!

To quote him: "[this is a] message to all the party kids who I want to meet and drink 40s with. Should be a fun show. And, oh, there will be lots of alcohol." He's damn talented and a super nice guy, so go support, dammit!

Blind Pilots @ Linc Real Art

    Press release:

Linc Real Art presents Blind Pilots, a group exhibition organized by Tim Evans. Blind Pilots is a flight of mythic grace into the recesses of the graphic imagination. Careening across the interior tundras of subjective sublimation, Blind Pilots explores the pursuits of a diverse new generation of artists from Asia and the U.S. who possess a special element of commonality revolving around the premise that anime, manga and technology

have become viable forms of cultural production that are continually shaping contemporary art and ideas.

This exhibiton examines a vibrant trend and growing aesthetic sensibility that can be characterized by a revived interest in the

elliptical/ornamental pictorial representations of traditional Asian prints and drawings, and by a lack of interest in a consistent, well-formed narrative with strong social or moral messages, opting instead for more visceral pursuits such as the depiction of self-conscious and anti-heroic visions that imbue the work with a sense of quietly suffering the eventlessness of the every day world while peripatetically searching for a chance to break out into a vast conceptual wilderness.

Participating artists include: Yoko Akiyama, Toby Barnes, Tim Evans, Keiji

Ito, Kyung Jeon, Hiroshi Kan, Akino Kondo, Mike Park, Jason Smith, and

    Sayumi Yokouchi

    Opening Party Thursday April 15, 2004 6pm - Late.

    Linc is Located at:

    1632 C Market

Magpie Arts and Boutique Grand Opening presents:

World of Wonder: Paintings in the Key of Stevie

    Curated by: Chako Suzuki

As much as it may be said that I am an inspiration to others, you know, others are an inspiration to me (and) inspire me. So I think it is kind of a ying-yang kind of thing.

    — Stevie Wonder, Technology, Music, and Being Blind, CSUN Conference

It ain't no superstition that everybody loves Stevie. He has written some of the most influential, important, and beloved do-be-do's of our time, and Magpie Arts wants to do its part in paying homage to him with its "World of Wonder" art show. Curator, Chako Suzuki, has drafted two bad mamma jamma artists, Evah Fan and Susie Ghahremani, to paint new works influenced by such heavenly grooves as Sir Duke, Boogie On, Reggae Woman, and Do I Do.

Opening night reception and grand opening party is on Saturday, March 27 from 7:00 until 11:00 pm, and is absolutely free (afterwards, head on over to the Whistlestop Bar for Bootie Basement night)! Magpie is located at 2205 Fern St. in South Park, San Diego. There will be lots of Stevie Wonder playing, artwork, and great clothes and accessories to buy, so gather your funds (credit cards and cash accepted). Bring the flier for 10% off boutique items! The show will run until April 27, 2004.

Evah Fan swears that she was smarter before the removal of the wisdom tooth. She is raspy-voiced and often murmurs to her neutered Jalapeno. Evah usually works with acrylics on paper, but guache is another favorite to get dirty with. The images produced are usually out of place, making sense in a nonsense way. Her work can be viewed at: http://204.97.89.2/%7Eefan/Pages/homey.html

Susie Ghahremani works as an illustrator, musician and painter out of her apartment in Rhode Island, the same town in which she received her BFA

from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in 2002. The patterning and attention to detail and color in her paintings and mixed media pieces are heavily intertwined with her interest and experiences in music. Her work has been featured on record covers, in a number of juried art shows around the world, and has seen publication in many magazines, including Bust, Martha Stewart Kids, Mac Design, and Utne. When Susie isn't making art or making music, you can find her rollerskating through her neighborhood of historic Benefit Street while eating ice cream and listening to the Pixies. 7. Double Happiness: Chinese New Years Show

Curated and written by: Chako Suzuki

The new year ushers in the year of the monkey. By the Chinese calendar, based on observations of the movement of the sun, moon, and stars, the year is 4701. According to the Tayside Chinese Association, "Legend has it that the Lord Buddha summoned all the animals to come to him before he departed from earth. Only twelve came to bid him farewell and as a reward he named a year after each one in the order they arrived."

Cassius King and Giant Robot want to celebrate the New Year, and wish you the five traditional Chinese blessings of longevity, wealth, virtue, health, and natural ending. Come celebrate with us at the "Double Happiness Chinese New Year Show." The opening night party is on Friday, January 16 from 6:00 pm until midnight and is absolutely free! There will be a DJ line-up and artwork to buy. The show will run until February 8, 2004.

The show will have seven participating artists: Sean Dougall, Kaoru C. Kumano, Stella Lai, Ogi, Mike Park, Deth P. Sun, and Kelly Tunstall. Gather your funds because all artwork is for sale and not over-priced!

Giant Robot magazine has been covering all areas of Asian and Asian-American pop culture for nearly ten years. Launched with no budget by Eric Nakamura and Martin Wong in 1994, the magazine has grown from a stapled-together zine to having worldwide distribution. It is sited and praised by critics, academics and journalists alike, and its daring and unique articles have been copied by numerous publications. From cutting edge design and fashion to ethnic culinary delights to Asian movie stars, Giant Robot has stayed abreast of it all and brought it back to its eager readers.

The four founding members of the Cassius King Gallery created the gallery because, as active particpants in San Diego's burgeoning art community, they felt their city needed a place where both up-and-coming and established artists could show their work. The gallery provides an excellent space for showing and viewing art.

She has been exhibiting her artwork since 1999 in at the Lizabeth Oliveria Gallery, the Institute of Contemporary Art, and The Exploratorium, to name a few. In 2000, she won I.D. Magazine's Silver Interactive Design Award, has her own design studio called tree-axis, and participated in the Monster Drawing Rally at Southern Exposure, an San Francisco art non-profit, in 2002 and 2003. She lives, works, and chats with her cat, Pupi, in San Francisco, California.

**Ogi was born in Tokyo and has been in America for approximately seven years. He is a recent graduate in illustration at the California College of the Arts. He cites Mark Rothko, Evan Hecox, and Michael Lau among his list of favorite artists and loves to hear a good deep house set with a stiff drink. He currently resides in Oakland, California.

**Mike Park lives in Oakland, California and creates series of small-scale paintings about the size of a kitchen tile. He'd love to meet minimalist painter, Agnes Martin, through Friendster, but that might be a long shot. He's a big fan of Rocket from the Crypt and his mantra is, "Assemble, Disassemble, Reassemble, Repeat."

**Deth P Sun has been exhibiting his paintings around the US s
