  1. thanks ^

i really don't understand his post at all and quite frankly, he's not worth either of our time! teaching english provides a way for me to make a living while experiencing life in a foreign country. and once again - you're wrong, pal - i'm not HALF white. obviously there ARE people who are interested in posts here or else this wouldn't be a thread. with that said, we should continue on with MC's issue at hand - the asshole has provided no help on the topic or any word on what he/she does for a living or his/her connection with Japan so anything he/she says is pretty invalid. throwing around a bunch of expletives and racists slang really does nothing to prove your intelligence, and i'm not trying to blame your ethnicity for that either.

  2. listen bitter ass, first off i'm not white trash. i'm half-japanese and i have family that lives in tokyo, including a sister, and i wanted to come to here to learn more about my roots and my family, and to check out the art scene. before you start making snap racist judgements, why don't you ask a few questions first. it's people like you who think they know everything about everyone and try to get other people down - why don't you take a fucking look in the mirror before you start criticizing other people.

  3. did my first day today. i had a lot of bad vibes from the company before i went to my first day so you can imagine the anxiety. i was also anxious about riding the train for 45 minutes. well, the train ride wasn't so bad (although shinjuku station always confuses me) and the train ride was more like 35 minutes. everyone at the particular location that i will be teaching at is rad. the teachers there seem to have a lot of the same interests as me and i'll be workingn with young kids - 2 - elementary. a lot of energy is required but there is also a lot of downtime it seems like. on the flip side, when i went to training at the head office with a few other teachers, i found that i was just lucky as to where i got placed - the teachers there were of a little bit of a different pace than me (although supre nice) so i'm glad i got placed where i did and that so far i get along with everyone really well...oh yeah and what sucks with my company is that you may not get two consecutive days off. i'm lucky in that i probably will since the girl whose job i am taking over has saturday and sunday off...

anyways just a little report if anyone cares...

    magpie arts and boutique present:

    a doe, a deer

Work by Martina Fugazzotto and Kelly Lynn Jones

Curator and Press Release by: Chako Suzuki

When February creeps up, we know warmer weather is just around the corner. Artists Martina Fugazzotto and Kelly Lynn tiptoe to the doorway of spring and take a peek in to see what’s in store for the season. Their kooky paintings and drawings draw inspiration from children’s books and nursery rhymes and are guaranteed to lift your spirits at the end of our oh-so-dreary SoCal winter. Magpie and curator, Chako Suzuki, proudly present their art and handmade goodies in the upcoming show, "a doe, a deer".

Come steal a look at spring at the opening night reception on Saturday, February 26 from 7:00 until 11:00 pm. The opening is absolutely free, and afterwards head on over to the Whistlestop Bar for a drink with friends! Magpie is located at 2205 Fern St. in South Park, San Diego. As always, there will be hot artwork, handmade goodies, and haute vintage clothes and accessories to buy, so gather your funds (credit cards and cash accepted). The show will run until March 23, 2005.

Martina Martina is an illustrator living, working, and drinking hot chocolate in Brooklyn, NY, where she dreams of all the beautiful California days she's missing out on. Inspired by her longing to be a charming Parisian from 1968, Martina draws and paints the sweetest situations she can think of. She currently works as a graphic designer for the online teen community gURL.com. For more please visit http://www.martinamartina.com.

Kelly Lynn Jones graduated from the California College of Arts and Crafts in 2002. She has exhibited in San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, San Diego, Los Angeles, Austin, Detroit, Portland, OR., and Bristol, England. She likes to make up little stories for each painting. She gets her inspiration from children's books, patterns, animals, and old family photographs. You can view Kelly's paintings at www.kellylynnjones.com. She also just started an online boutique, http://www.littlepaperplanes.com, where you can see her handmade goodies.

    About Magpie

Artist couple, David and Meegan Cuzick mulled over of the idea of opening a hybrid gallery and boutique for over a year. Lots of brainstorming, buying, and hammering later, Magpie was born - its moniker a twist on Meegan's name and an ode to their fascination with birds. David built up the space and Meegan lovingly plucks each vintage item for the store to make visiting Magpie an experience and not just a shopping trip.

  5. Hi - i'm interested in finding a job other than teaching english. not sure if you have anything to offer, but thought i'd put myself out there. i'll be moving to tokyo in february and you can contact me and i can send you my resume if you like. i do curating and freelance writing. thanks!

  6. Just wondering if anyone has any advice on banking in tokyo. i was going to close out my american bank account and open up a citibank since i know they have citibank atms in tokyo...however, is it best to bring cash with me and change it over and THEN open an account at citibank or open a citibank account here with money in it (you can withdraw from anywhere in the world, however, you cannot make deposits outside of the country where you open the account) and then change the account over once i get to tokyo?

aaaaand has anyone used citibank for primary banking in tokyo??

also - if you wear contacts, do most of you buy your contacts there, or did you stock up before you left?

i leave next month. seems like so much hassling i have to do before i get there.

  7. hmm well do you enjoy it and do you have time to do other things? the whole teaching thing for me is just a way to get paid...i want to try to do some art stuff (curating) but we'll see what happens - i just want to make sure i have enough time so that my teaching job will not become my life for the year that i am in tokyo...

yes my living location is in a primo spot!! it's basically about 10 mins walking distance from both harajuku and shibuay..i am very lucky (family hookup) and the price is pretty much the same as what i'd pay for a studio here in san diego...

Damn dude, sounds good if you ask me.

That's not Tokyo? Well, that's Tokyo enough for me (well, you will be closer than I am! I'm in Ichikawa on the border of Chiba and Tokyo).

Also, remember that once you have the visa then you have it and the company can't change that. If the company is not what you want then I recommend looking for something else as soon as you get here (something I wish I had done earlier).

    Best of luck!

whoa - you're scaring me. what job do you have?

also marinecorspse - yes i've talked to the consulate. i think we had this convo before in another thread . . . .

  9. hm this is the area where i will be working:

    Shinmaruko Station on Tokyu-Toyoko line

i'm not really sure where that is. I have an apartment secured which is about 1 minute walking distance from yoyogi hachiman station..i have to ask my sister how close that is...

also, i am going to try to get the "child of a national" visa that my sister currently has. basically, if i hate my job, i can quit and find another one without losing my visa....
