    Hi All,

IN LESS THAN TWO WEEKS WEEKS the CON is comin back to San Diego!!! aaaand . . .

Cassius King Gallery and Curator, Chako Suzuki, present . . .

Ooh! Ah! Shangri-La!: Paradise is Very Nice

Just minutes from the convention center and the waterfront and with easy access to the international airport, the Cassius King gallery provides the perfect five-star accommodation for fifteen artists who will stimulate your body and soul with their visions of paradise. In a lavish gallery setting under the endless sunny skies of San Diego, you will experience the wonder of independent comic book art. When you get tired of roaming the spacious gallery, you can relax by the koi pond in the garden behind the gallery and listen to the soothing tunes of DJ Steven Nereo, founder of Slabco Records.

With all the violence and death in the world today, Cassius King thought it'd be nice to revive the old trick, escapism, and imagine what it would look like in 2004. Curator, Chako Suzuki, handpicked seventeen independent comic book artists who are translating their visions of paradise onto canvas and paper just for you. Comic books are enjoying a comeback among young adults in both the theater and in print, and we'd like to show San Diego that comics aren't just for little kids - they bring about the nostalgia, craziness, and imagination that our everyday lives may lack.

Come see that paradise is very nice at the free opening reception on Friday, July 23, 2004, from 6 - 11:00 pm! There will be artwork and lots of goodies to buy, so bring your cash! The gallery is located a hop, skip, and a jump away from the convention center, so if you’re there for Comicon, come finish off your day with Cassius King. The show will only run until August 9, 2004. Bon Voyage!

    Magpie Gallery and Boutique presents:

    WHEN THE WORLD IS MUD-LUSCIOUS

Work by Sean Dougall and Michael McKeogh

Curated and Press Release by: Chako Suzuki

    in Just-

spring when the world is mud-

    luscious the little

    lame baloonman

    whistles far and wee

    and eddieandbill come

    running from marbles and

    piracies and it's

    spring

    when the world is puddle-wonderful

    the queer

    old baloonman whistles

    far and wee

    and bettyandisbel come dancing

    from hop-scotch and jump-rope and

    it's

    spring

    and

    the

    goat-footed

    baloonMan whistles

    far

    and

    wee

    — in just, ee cummings

In this poem, ee cummings creates lush imagery with made-up words and unconventional capitalization and phrasing. The movement within the poem goes from breathless childlike abandon to halting one-word lines that describe an idyllic world where spring is the only season. cummings presents the metamorphosis from innocence to awakening in the satyric figure of the baloonman - a representation of the mythic Pan, spring, and sexuality. Brave artists, Sean Dougall and Michael McKeogh, tackle this poem and interpret it onto canvas.

Magpie and curator, Chako Suzuki, want to capture the frivolous spirit of spring before the long, hot soCal summer takes over. Opening night reception will be on Saturday, June 5 from 7:00 until 11:00 pm, and is absolutely free (afterwards, head on over to the Whistlestop Bar for a drink with friends)! Magpie is located at 2205 Fern St. in South Park, San Diego. DJ Bootney Farnsworth will be spinning all night, and there will be artwork and great vintage clothes and accessories to buy, so gather your funds (credit cards and cash accepted). The show will run until July 7, 2004.

Artist couple, David and Meegan Cuzick mulled over of the idea of opening a hybrid gallery and boutique for over a year. Lots of brainstorming, buying, and hammering later, Magpie was born - its moniker a twist on Meegan's name and an ode to their fascination with birds. David built up the space and Meegan lovingly plucks each vintage item for the store to make visiting Magpie an experience and not just a shopping trip.

Sean Dougall grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada. He graduated from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas with a B.F.A. in Ceramic Sculpture. He currently works as a production designer, painter and ceramic sculptor in Los Angeles and is planning a fantastic hot air balloon trip for the autumn season. www.timbrespace.org

    and a quick run down:

    Welcome to the Carnival Fabulon!

Co-curated and Press Release by: Chako Suzuki

The carnival rolls in sometime after midnight . . . The shrill siren song of a calliope beckons to all with a seductive promise of dreams and youth regained. — Ray Bradbury, Something Wicked This Way Comes

These [scary stories are] written by norms to scare norms. And do you know what the monsters and demons and rancid spirits are? Us, that’s what. You and me. We are the things that come to the norms in nightmares … These books teach me a lot. They don’t scare me because they’re about me. — Catherine Dunn, Geek Love

P.T. Barnum introduced America to its first circus sideshow over a hundred years ago; it has since become an obligatory part of circus culture. Barnum entertained the country by presenting people and acts from outside the mundane world, and the audience was bewitched. His freak show attractions simultaneously piqued the curiosity and repulsion of its viewers who kept coming back for more.

These days, a good carnival freakshow is hard to find. If you're tired of the same old smoke and mirrors tricks, come satisfy your cravings for a carnivalesque spectacle at the Cassius King Gallery. Curators, Alma Ronis and Chako Suzuki, are rolling in the Carnival Fabulon, a showcase of art inspired by such literary works as Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes and Catherine Dunn's cult classic, Geek Love. Dare to ask yourself: "What is normal?", "What is freakish?" Will you run? Will you hide? Will you gawk? Will you laugh? How will you fare at the Carnival Fabulon?

Come see what's under the big top at the opening night reception on Friday, May 7, 2004, from 6 - 11:00 pm absolutely free! There will be artwork to buy, so bring your alfalfa! The show will only run until May 31, 2004.

Sideshow artists include: Carson Ellis, Martha Rich, Kathy Ruppert, Rachel Salomon, Alika Cooper, Barbara Rourke, Chako Suzuki, Stefanie Augustine, Maura Vazakas, Alexia Markarian, Tina Sedonne, Elizabeth Washburn, Barbara Rourke, Alexia Markarian, Tina Sedonne, Rebecca Westcott, Esther Watson, Amanda Dunbier, Emily Coonce
