  1. Before going there I heard some pretty disconcerting first-hand stories too. In reality it seems that most of the first generation bandits and hooligans have kinda gentrified themselves. The Moscow economy has been booming for years and many earn decent and legal money nowadays. Ofcourse you still shouldn't flash your Tag Heuer or iPod on the subway! What still hasn't been eradicated is the racial violence, actually the phenomenon I feared most. It's been relatively quiet the past few years but due to the recent massacre in Beslan, Southern Russia and the two plane crashes I've heard that right-wing extremists have taken to the street again in full force to attack and molest ethnic minorities.

  2. If you're after a romantic tête-à-tête, head for Prague even though at certain periods of the year the (inner) city is swamped by tourists, notably loud single male Britons who fly in on cheap carriers to celebrate their stag parties here (grmppfff...). Good shopping if you're into glass, crystal and retro cubist design.

Budapest is a good second option. Less fairy-tale but definitely more energy than Prague and a great party town as the Hungarians are Mediterraneans in disguise.

Moscow...ah, Moscow! One of the most exciting cities I've been to. This is a third world city in some areas and then again it equals New York and Tokyo in others. Probably not a destination for a long weekend but for at least a week and I'd recommend teaming up with a local to really get into that energetic Moscow vibe. Great nightlife but shopping [fashion] here mainly means big names for big bucks but check out the emerging Russian brands like Chapurin which may be less expensive.

  3. ORSON+BODIL COUTURE RETURNS

The fashion design duo Alexander van Slobbe and Guus Beumer have relaunched their Orson+Bodil women’s couture label from a new studio/shop in Amsterdam’s Westergasfabriek cultural complex, a converted 19th-century gasworks. The founding of Orson+Bodil in 1989 signalled the start of a more conceptual approach to fashion in the Netherlands, and helped put Dutch fashion on the international map. Thanks to the sober aesthetic, (de)constructivist twists, and meticulous handcrafted detailing of the garments, Orson+Bodil was the first Dutch high-fashion label to be sold in Barneys (New York) and Joseph (London). ‘It’s not just the hand of the designer, but also the hand of the maker that determines the quality of an item of clothing,’ said the label’s designer Alexander van Slobbe. So in 1994, rather than turning to mass production of Orson+Bodil collections, Alexander van Slobbe and Guus Beumer turned their attention to designing the men’s line SO. Ten years on, Van Slobbe and Beumer are realizing a desire to revisit a more experimental platform and explore a closer relationship between designer and client. This prompted their return to Orson+Bodil and collaboration with Pascale Gatzen for their new collection.

  4. Hi,

My focus would be Swedish / Scandinavian design stores and as I like local fashion flavours, I’d be interested in local fashion brands and/or quirky stores as well...

  5. Hi,

Couldn't get enough the first time around so I'm planning to head back for Moscow plus some more interesting sites: Novgorod, Suzdal, Tver, St. Petersburg and probably Stockholm too on my way back home. Just wondered if there's any additional info out there on clubs and not-to-be-missed shops in these destinations.

    Thanks!
