  1.

Thanks freezie - I will look into that, new one on me mate.

Dylan - Loake 1880 are a better choice, and here's another, relatively similar looking boot to consider.

Horween Leather, cheaper and made in Northampton. They don't specify who the manufacturer is but I suspect that it might be NPS Solovair going by some of the markings.

NPS Solovair were the original maker of the DM boot and are still an OEM or private label manufacturer for other brand labels.

These do look nice!, I notice that Aero also sell some william lennon boots too!, gotta love aero!

Freezie - my local shop does collect+ I may well try that out next time!

  2. I used to wear Grenson a lot then the quality started heading south about 4 years ago. I am sure one of the better informed UK shoe enthusiasts could provide you with more detail but I would do your research before ordering.

Hmmm, thanks for the headsup, I will have to have a better look into them. I thought they may be a good alternative to the Loake 1880 collection!

  3. from a few minutes ago...went suit shopping!

    xlze.jpg

    beanie: conte of florence

    jacket: solid jeans

    shirt: ihsh-19

    t-shirt: the flat head

    belt/bracelet/ring: ihb-02/ihsi-02/self edge feather ring

    jeans: UES 400T

    shoes: Vans Era 59

forget the suit thinfinn, your fine the way you are!!

  4. No bother. For starters, you could ask for a swatch sample to include the zug and the kip, say also a latigo and CXL to compare them....

Anyway, food for thought. Plenty of life left in your 1K's yet, and still resoles ahead of you!

cool, I think I will email them next month and get them to send me some samples! as for the 1K's I don't think I will bother getting them resoled! wolverine don't offer this as a service and even if they did it would cost a small fortune to send them to the states (royal mail ripoffs) and in this country I can only seem to find cheap mail order cobblers!

  5. ...and new.

You mentioned resoling, bear in mind these are not welted. The brass screwed construction is pretty unique and I doubt that a regular cobbler could help. You'd most likely have to send them back when it came to it, although of course the benefit is that they would be resoled on the original last on which they were built.

Thanks for taking the time to post these up mate, these look absolutely stunning! As for resoling, yes I would send them back to WL, they seem to know what they are doing;-)

Also I like the zug grain steerhide leather they have on their website here...

..This looks like it would be a bit tougher than the standard waxy tan leather too!...So many choices!!

  6. Dylan, I wouldn't know, I don't have it! Only got a sample swatch, but handled the boot and tried them on in the factory.

I just use a heavy boot lard. You know the stuff, Obenaufs, Huberds boot grease etc, or Chelsea Leather Food - I've tried them all and probably favour the last. In my opinion it's this sort of leather that the heavy grease is better for, I;d use Bick4 on anything smooth out.

Thats cool, I thought that would be the case! This strikes me as the kind of leather that can withstand some pretty severe treatment and I plan to use these boots with no halfsoles so the uppers have to be tough enouph to stand up to multiple resoles! I'm sure the normal WL leather is fine but I kind of like the extreme nature of this leather!

  7. Damn Hog that reverse kip is amazing up close! how do you treat it? Would you just hit them with a bit of leather conditioner?I really think this may be the leather I get WL to make my 178's out of (I have to get the money together in the next couple of months though!)

  8. Dundas is a brand - William Lennon make the boots. They also have made editions for YMC (YouMustCreate) and MH (Margaret Howell).

The Dundas type 01 is a make up for that brand. You could approximate the look with a custom order yourself direct from WL. And save the ridiculous mark up.

The sole attachment is a particular unique method screwed and stitched where the machine fed threaded brass wire joins all the soles together. A few other firms still operate this way.

    There are three lasts;

    - the WWII Army last used on the derby boots e.g. 78 models etc

    - the '88' shepherds last used on the hill boots, notable for the upward sprung toe

    - and the 2181 B5 last with the square toe

I'm not certain whether the Dundas range use the fully sprung 88 or the regular British Army last, but the fit is an English 'G' width. Sizewise, I am a bang on UK 9, which usually means dropping down to 8.5 UK for some, not all, British boots - however dropping to an 8 meant my boots on the Army last were too short. The 9 was a tad large all over, although comfortable.

If you are a generous 'whole' size then that size may well indeed work.

I don't do insole inserts, preferring hard leather under my feet, and little unnecessary arch support.... Besides as far as I am concerned aftermarket insoles take up volume 'vertically' meaning your foot sits higher in the boot, not always good for heal fit. Just my opinion of course.

...Damn I just checked the dundas website and the cheapest pair on there are £456!!! they are almost identical to the WL 178 boot @£155.95 from the factory but the upper is a bit shorter (by one eyelet(I thought that would make them cheaper if anything;-))) and over £520 for the chromexel model! I emailed WL about a month ago and they had black chromexel in stock! I have to say I am a bit bemused that anyone who knows that WL make those boots would not just order from WL, maybe im just jealous as I am skint at the moment!

  9. Hey man, I've used Leatherique on everything from my car's leather interior to Mulholland Brothers Lariat leather (natural finish) to a natural color ostrich belt and never had a problem - stuff works great

Thanks man, that's just what I thought! I will hit them with it when I finish these night shifts!

  10. Hi guys, I recently pulled the half soles off of my wolverine 1000 mile boots (they where coming unstuck at the front!) and I was thinking that the leather soles could do with a treatment! I have some leaherique rejuvenator oil at home that I got from aero (it's what they recommend for their jackets!) Do you think that this treatment would be OK for these boots?

  11. X post from WAYWT thread. I know these are not fashionable in the SUFU sense of the word but I thought I would put these up on here as they are sought after in other circles! They are a pair of Altberg Bergen boots. These can be fully serviced by Altberg including re-soling so will last a lifetime.  I have heard story's of these holding up to 3 re-soling's  with hard military use!!
