  1. I have an unusual question. When I was out thrifting the other day, I found the most amazing coat in the men's section. Heavy worsted wool, beautifully cut, fit me sensationally well (I am tall but have narrow shoulders). Seriously, fits like a glove, beautiful heavyweight cloth, just perfect.

I found it super easy to button, too, which was strange, because I'm left-handed, and...

    Oh.

    Oh, shit.

    Is this a woman's coat?

So it turns out that it buttons right-over-left, which is usually associated with women's coats. In fact, I think that's basically the #1 way of telling womens and mens coats apart, and it's pretty much universal.

But this coat is cut straight, it's in a size that's not usual for women (~40L), it's made at Singer Clothing in Brooklyn (which makes "Mens and Boys clothing") and is made from "exclusive suiting" from Smith, Renton & Co.

    So, uh, two questions

    1) This isn't a woman's coat, right? It's a men's coat tailored for a leftie. Right?

    2) And if it is a men's coat, will I be scorned/mocked/derided for wearing it because it buttons right-over-left?

  2. Neat! It doesn't look like anyone has any info as to date of manufacture or availability. Are they vintage?

Yep, vintage, and AFAIK not a brand that's manufactured anymore.

However, if you want a Canadian design icon that's still manufactured, you can't go wrong with the Sorel Caribou Wool:

  4. where to hem nice jeans in toronto?

thread for sydneys looks like sydneys is not great and kim's isn't either.

    any suggestions?

    thank you

No direct experience but I have heard that if you're willing to pay + wait, Klaxon Howl does a very good job, chainstitching, etc. I believe they ship them off to their mfg facility out in Scarbs, so it takes a while. It's also as/more expensive than Sydney's.

  5. Got my pair in the mail today. So far, really digging them. Definitely not as slim-fitting as expected - somewhat generously cut I think. I'll post BIG style measurements on here later today. I think I'm going to try washing them in hot water to see if they shrink at all. Right now they are just fine as is, but could comfortably be a size smaller. (However, maybe I'm just used to denim where they have to be really tight at first because of the stretching...)

However - loving the selvedge outseam, cinchback waist, etc. Nice details - definitely all the 'DNA' of the north american carhartt pants - but with some nice refinements.

  6. So.. cyclists... since crotch blowouts seem pretty much inevitable... is there any sense to preemptively reinforcing the crotch? Anyone want to offer pics/advice of crotch reinforcement on new jeans?

  7. yeah after i graduate i will save up and buy a pair of expensive jeans and experience the difference. I have owned about 6 different pairs of dry denim and this is my second from naked and famous, the first being the 21oz. the others were nudies and A.P.C. I have been riding my bike to school and also doing yard work and other daily activities in my n&f indigos for just over a month, in my personal experience they are breaking in pretty fast. other people say theirs fade slow. I just wanted to comment that mine are fading fast for anyone wanting to know how these jeans react to wear.....

judging from your posts you are a dick, it's just a jean forum......we are all just talking about jeans, try to not take things so personal

I found the 21oz slim guys have been super slow to fade. However, I can't complain in the slightest. Wonderfully thick, comfortable denim - and 'hairy', which is a lovely surprise given that they are sanforized. Unusual to get that nice 'hairy' texture in a sanforized jean.

  8. so now, after they get their foot in the door, they jump up into the 300 price range?? crazy

In their defence, their regular weight indigo selvedge is as good a deal as you can find in the market. The $300 range is pricey, no question, but who else does a full-selvedge black denim jean in 24oz denim (I presume that's what is meant by "heavier than 21oz")? The only thing that comes close would be the Sammy BK, which is 19oz and costs $335 if you are lucky enough to find a pair.

My impression is that N&F wants to keep making high quality denim accessible (see their regular lines, plus this new Unbranded Brand he's doing for UO) -- but that he also has an interest in pushing the envelope. See the green denim in the tour thread, the hank-dyed denim, this superheavy black that's coming out, the silk blends, the cashmere blends, etc.

  9. Can anyone recommend good places for really heavy-weight grey flannel or grey tweed pants? I'm looking for something that could be worn casually with boots in lieu of jeans. Heavy is important - I have lots of pairs of flannels, twills, etc but they are all very light. I want something with heft and quality.

Style cues from workwear and militaria are fine - I just don't want anything too overly baggy nor excessively painted-on -- I want something that feels classic and ageless.

    I know, that's a lot to ask.

    Suggestions?

  10. Hello SuFu,

I got this cute wool cycling cap on Etsy, but got it in the wrong size. Alas, my hat size is about 7 1/4, and this hat is more like 6 7/8 or 7.

    (Check your size here: http://www.weaverdevore.ca/popup_hat_size_conversion.php)

    Here's the description:

"Hand made tweed cycling cap. Gray front piece with three gray patterned panels. Front of bill is gray pattern, the underside of the bill is plain gray. The bill is strenthened with extra layers of fabric, but flexible enough to be folded in a bag or pocket. Grey lining. Subtle elastic band in the back to allow for flexible sizing."

I paid $25 plus shipping. Happy to find a home for it for $10 + shipping.
