  1. The 551Zxx is the predecessor to the 505. It started with the 501Zxx in '54(leather patch version, very rare) then paper patch 501Zxx 'till 1962, when the renamed 551Zxx was launched (to coincide with the 557XX jacket).

    Thanks, doc.

Does the cut of the 551 Zxx differ much from the '60s 501 repros?

  2. Another sufu member, rnrswitch, has a pair with a talon zipper apparently - Would you be so kind as to tell me the date of manufacturer on yours and what type of zipper is fitted?

    .

Hey Doc, my zxx are labeled as having been made in Feb. 1998. They are stamped 555 and have a YKK zipper.

I wasn't familiar with this model when I found this pair, so I looked it up on sufu. The conversation I found had this model as being a repro of Levi's first sanforized jean from the early '60s (63?). Does that sound right?

  3. roy5.9.1946,your 333s dont need a soak at all.

Crap, assistivelynice I know! Who could have figured out that these damn things in the "Broken Raw" rinse wouldn't shrink at all though, since LVC wasn't kind enough to tell anyone how they processed them.

I was tired, it was late, the sale was almost over, you know the story. I figured I'd take a chance for once that LVC's story about "buy two inches above true size" would more or less work.

So what's the actual size of these tagged 34x32 with no more shrinking to be hoped for, which should, by their own account, measure 32x30?

    35x37!!!

    Thanks, LVC.

Oh well, its a vintage fit, lets say.

The zxx, being sanforized, don't strictly need a soak either, I was mostly speaking figuratively.

    Hey, let's see those 1873s.

Dr. Heech, wouldn't that be a wet blanket-lined blouse?

  4. So to summise, I used to own three pairs of Lvc and wear 'em to death, but now I feel i'm one of the aforementioned people superscore pointed out. Maybe it's just clinical depression? Can anyone cheer me up here?

    .

I hear you Dr. Heech. Like you, I discovered LVC and laid in a big supply. While I did buy some things that I realistically am not going to fit in any time soon, I do like all of the pieces I have and fully intend to wear them all to threads eventually.

Clothes are the one thing I splurge on. I tell myself I am making up for lost time, as I've been a slob for practically all my life and have only recently learned to dress myself like an adult (arguable, yes). I buy a lot of vintage stuff, but that is relatively cheap. LVC is where the retirement fund is being spent. I suppose it could be worse- we could be Mister Freedom fans!:P (I actually am a MF fan, I just don't buy it.)

I'm committed to a pair of '33s for the foreseeable future, but whenever I go into my closet these two bad boys are the worst offenders at staring me down, whispering in my ear- "It's such a SHORT trip to the bathtub. One soak is all it would take, my friend..."

  5. I noticed on this site http://www.trynka.net/Site/501%20FAQ.html that for sizing LVC mocels from 2009 on, that you should go true to size. Are regular shrink to fits sized differently? I was thinking of picking up a pair of regular STFs just for experimenting. What do you guys recommend?

The tags on modern 501 STFs recommend sizing up two inches (or three, depending on your size)- when I purchased some last year I got two, one true to size and one over-sized by an inch. The true to size one seemed like a good, slim (not skinny) fit. The sized up one felt a bit baggy, to me.

Modern 501s are usually pretty consistent in sizing, unlike the LVC stuff.

  6. You're right about the 2nd edition Aero/Lvc jacket on both counts.

It was in a kind of weathered finish, and it wasn't an Aero collab/made jacket.

From what I can remember it was in a lower grade leather than even the 2002 edition. Not even sure if the 2nd ed. was horsehide or not.

    .

I think the same thing happened with this jacket. This is the first edition of the "Beat Brown" jacket, looks to be based on a civi issue a-1 jacket that Levi's produced in the '40s.

This is an Aero product. There was a second version released the following season, which in photos looks a lot different, and not as nice. I'm guessing the second one isn't Aero.

This is maybe my favorite LVC/Aero as far as wearability- I wear it almost every day. It's really comfortable and rides well.

The attention to detail is amazing. The inside is as nice as the out, with a really nice, warm lining (one of Aero's staple) and contrasting sleeve lining. Stitching is absolutely perfect.

  7. I didn't follow it due to it being way too small. But that sort of thing often happens on ebay now.

Lvc did a re-run of the R'n'R, think it was 2005 (?), but the quality was poor even compared to the 2002 season. Saw the latest offering in Cinch last weekend. Truly awfull jacket - didn't even bother asking about it.

    .

Was the rerun of the R'n'R in a different finish? A kind of weathered black?

I have a friend who works at Levi's and used to work in the LVC division around that time, she said the LVC/Aero partnership fell apart right around then, so I wonder if the second version wasn't even an Aero product.

Alright, I have to ask: how horrible is the new jacket and why?
