Good thing you mentioned that Church HC. I drive past it everyday going to work. Saint Paul's Church. It's in downtown Norfolk. Stopped by on my way home.

trying to lure people to come back and live down here. most folks come to work at the shipyard. many are civilians but there's also Navy folks assigned to a ship that work at the yard too.
one of the greasy spoons near the shipyard
new
directly behind me from the above pic
new shipyard apprentice school.
Newport News Victory Arch. Built in 1919 and rebuilt in 1962, it's a memorial to those that served during Wars.
i love this Post Office. wish it wasn't so tucked away in a lousy part of town. really needs to be seen more by the public.
and proof that I'm still rockin the tour jeans!

went on a stroll again. i was stuck covering a court case all day so I didn't have much to do. this is the "downtown" or the lower area of Newport News. most of this area consist of the Newport News Shipyard, coal shipping facilities and city administration buildings.
the shipyard is where our aircraft carriers are built along with nuclear submarines. the ship in the foreground (tower to the left) is the decommissioned USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. They are taking that apart. The tower to the left is the Gerald R. Ford which is still unde
r construction.
almost fell over this cliff going to take pic's of the ships
scouted this pool nearby. needs some skaters!
this is the old library which is still in use.

great day today. awesome weather. work was a breeze. didn't really do anything exciting but i did get off a little early so i went and picked up the Quinnster for dinner. took the tour jeans to a Norfolk landmark. one of those places you just have to do if you ever visit this little town.
i stole this off their website-
At the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Abe Doumar was struck by great inspiration. A traveling salesman, Abe spent his days selling paperweights to fairgoers. One evening, he noticed that an ice cream stand had to close when they ran out of paper dishes, the primary way of selling ice cream to go. Nearby, another salesman was cooking up waffles on single-iron waffle maker and selling his creations, garnished with a dollop of whip cream. On a whim, Abe bought a waffle, rolled it into a cone and topped it with ice cream. The result: the delicious and unforgettable combination of the warm sweetness of a fresh waffle and smooth ice cream. Abe diplomatically proposed that the ice cream vendor and waffle salesman collaborate so that the ice cream stand could continue operating. For the rest of the fair, Abe sold ice cream in the world’s first waffle cones.

on the way outta town passed by a few old motels. the kind my parents would crash at back in the late 70's when we would drive down to see my crazy relatives in Florida.
i hear there might be more snow again later this week?! at this point, yeah, just bring it.

tvshooter PSA!!!! check your smoke detectors, change the batteries and check them again. i can't tell you how many times over the course of my nearly 18 year career in tv news how smoke detectors SAVE LIVES! the ones who die almost always have either no smoke detector or a malfunctioning one. trust me on this one.

went down to a small North Carolina town today. the kind that has a three/four block main street that has decayed to almost nothing. lots of cool old buildings and stuff and such. i walked around after lunch imagining what the town must have been like 50 years ago, before strip malls came along. talked to one business owner who said basically the local politicians suck. people from outside the area purchased the buildings years ago with no intention of restoring them, just use them as a tax write off.
then i crossed the tracks
i wonder what buildings like this were used for
