Now that Rakuten Global Market has been officially closed for a few weeks, was wondering what folks are using as their preferred alternates?  I'm based in California.

I'm familiar with Denimio and OkayamaDenim, which I've used, but both have a narrow selection, and I have yet to try Amazon Japan.  I still can't figure out how to use Rakuten Global Express (derp).

I'm most bummed about Rakuten Global Market closing because it gave access to quality used / second hand stuff.  Are there any other options for buying second hand without Rakuten Global Market?

  2. Picked up the blue suede teddy bear, for my toddler daughter (but also kinda for me).  Mine didn't ship with the custom box so RL customer support gave me a $75 partial refund off of $240.  At $165 its merely an expensive teddy bear, rather than an outrageously priced teddy bear.  :)  Kinda like it, so does the kid.  FYI on a fringe RRL item.

  3. While I also love the concept of Visvim and Kapital I find them too avant-garde for a ‘plain guy’ like myself to pull off. Visvim (and Kapital to a lesser extent) is also what’s known as a ‘Veblen good’ meaning that, like other super high-end fashion, its appeal increases as its price / exclusivity increases.

On the other end of the spectrum are the repro / Americana brands which are the bread and butter of Japanese denim but lean a little too far into the ‘lumberjack’ look for my taste.

For what it’s worth my faves recently have been brands like Blue Blue Japan and 45rpm, which, like most other brands beloved on this forum also emphasize super high quality, but are not necessarily super identified either with the Americana set or the high fashion set. My 0.02!

  4. Hi all, had a question for @kiya / folks in general.

Here's my question / concern:  I have two pairs of 45rpm Sorahikos that I've worn and loved for years, and which developed holes in the knees.  Since I live in San Francisco, I took them to Self Edge for their denim repair service.  SF did a nice job with both jeans, really working over the holes with a LOT of darning.

The problem is that the darned sections are now so 'dense' and stiff with new material that the stress and strain of wearing the jeans is now transferring awayfrom the repaired sections, and to the edges of the unrepaired denim.  That strain is evident, as the threads around the edges are starting to wear out and unravel.  If I continue wearing these repaired jeans, the threads all around the repaired bits are going to unravel, and the entire patched portions are simply going to 'fall off', leaving huge holes.

I don't think this would happen if the darned portions were more flexible, but since they're so stiff and rigid, its kind of a challenge because the whole jean doesn't really move and flex in a 'fluid' way anymore.  Is there a way to UN-darn the repaired sections, or make the darned areas a lot more flexible somehow?  As it stands, I'm scared to wear my beloved old Sorahikos because they are wearing out even faster now with the darned patches.

    Any advice would be appreciated!

  5. Hi all, had a question for Kiya / folks in general.  First, lemme say that I've been a customer of Self Edge for years and love you guys, and still adore the SF + Al's Attire shirt I got there in 2010.  :)

Here's my question / concern:  I have two pairs of 45rpm Sorahikos that I've worn and loved for years, and which developed holes in the knees.  Since I live in San Fran, I took them to Self Edge for their well-regarded denim repair service.  SF did a nice job with both jeans, really working over the holes with a LOT of darning.

The problem is that the darned sections are now so 'dense' and stiff with new material that the stress and strain of wearing the jeans is now transferring away from the repaired sections, and to the edges of the unrepaired denim.  That strain is evident, as the threads around the edges are starting to wear out and unravel.  If I continue wearing these repaired jeans, the threads all around the repaired bits are going to unravel, and the entire patched portions are simply going to 'fall off', leaving huge holes.

I don't think this would happen if the darned portions were more flexible, but since they're so stiff and rigid, its kind of a challenge because the whole jean doesn't really move and flex in a natural way anymore.  Is there a way to UN-darn the repaired sections, or make the patched areas a lot more flexible somehow?  As it stands, I'm scared to wear my beloved old Sorahikos.

    Any advice would be appreciated!

Pure Blue Japan XX-009 14oz deep indigo selvage regular tapered jeans.  Both the warp and weft of these jeans are indigo-dyed; crazy fade effects (look for examples online).  Worn three times, washed once.  Crazy, super chunky slubby denim that feels amazing.  Only VERY slight fading at edges -- lots more to come.  These jeans have 99.9% of life remaining.  Also, they fade quickly!

Made in Japan, bought in Japan.

Selling because I got fat, and I can't fit anymore, sadly.

31" tagged waist.   Never hemmed to a shorter inseam.  Actual measurements, to the best of my ability:

    Waist, laid flat:  16.25"

    Inseam: 34.5"

    Front rise: 10.5"

    Leg opening: 8"

(Note: These are a bit tighter in the crotch than most jeans of similar measurements, FYI).

    $300 new.
