  1. wall of text

ok the fact is, the older collections were more innovative and impressive design wise than the recent collections.  if you believe that's jun "focusing more on the clothes than grandiose runway" then i don't know what to say to you.  u keep bringing up this point in your mini essay that he's focusing on the clothes when it's quite obvious the design is incredibly underwhelming.

everyone knows his new stuff is more wearable but that should be UU (or johnundercover) territory.. this diffusion isn't even that far off from mainline.

  2. Yeah but now this raises the question what is quality. I dunno what you're comparing UC to and coming to the conclusion that it's not that great quality wise. Maybe you've got blinders on from being in the thick of it but UC is still better quality than 90% of the clothes on the planet. Even limiting it to designer fashion I feel UC is better quality than most of what's out there. Which is why the argument that you buy it for the design and nothing else seems silly. That's a great description for something like H&M but it feels like you're splitting hairs when you apply it to something like UC, in order for that conclusion to be apt there needs to be something significantly above UC quality wise which you can compare it to which I don't think exists. I dunno I just feel this argument is kind of tiring, it's still made in Japan designer clothes, it's still better than most of the fashion out there.

Feels like people need to shit on UC because it's popular now and has been co-opted by the internet fashion mainstream (which is still like 0.1% of the planet, similar to the quality argument). The brand is about to turn 20 years old next year. For what was a brand that was originally built on being cool that's an eternity, it's also a good time to cash in the chips. If you want really innovative clothes you're not going to get it from a brand that was cool in the 90's. That's the trade off with fashion, young designers have new and innovative ideas but they don't have the skills and experience to produce really consistent product. Old designers don't have the new and innovative ideas but they do have the skills and experience to deliver that really consistent product. You're saying that people buy UC for the ideas and not the quality but I think it's actually the exact opposite. It's just that quality means more than something like the stitch count.

The problem here is that we're expecting new and innovative ideas from an older designer which I think is kind of indicative of the problem with the fashion scene right now. We're in an intermediary phase where the next generation of designers haven't really established themselves and the older generation hasn't really moved on. In fact what's happening in fashion right now could probably be compared to the global issue of the baby boomers refusing to retire and move on. Or maybe the new designers are there but they're not doing anything worth acclaim so we're fetishizing the past instead.

UC quality is about the same now as 3-6 years ago.  You're not going to be incredibly impressed.. but the designs and fabric choices were way more interesting back then which is what made the difference.  What memorable piece have you seen in the past 4-6 collections?  Even the tumblr-hyped "She Brings the Rain" jacket is just a retake on the one from Neoboy/Poptonez with shittier leather.  30,000 yen for a basic cotton shirt with dodgy stitching is definitely enough to say the quality is poor.

Now it's just mediocre quality with boring design.  That being said, I find this stuff much easier to wear and I'd much rather be caught in a full Johnundercover kit than Earmuff Maniac but there's no way you can say any of the recent collections have been impressive design-wise.

  3. depends on what you want in a leather

the vanson leathers are really heavy in weight

the leather on UC jackets isn't all that great

the bounty hunter collab and lewis leather ones are nice.. generally you can tell how flimsy they will be by looking at them. even the mirror one looks ok (with the quilting)

  4. Legit... Essentially he is based in HK and has a friend/contact in Nagoya who does store pickups from the F.I.L. there. The two of them charge 10% proxy fee, in some cases more depending on how hyped the item is. From what I can gather his contact ships the goods to him in HK, and then he forwards them onto you. It's a shame the guy in Japan can't ship direct, as in all cases you're paying for two shipping costs Japan > HK, HK > you.

He's from Toronto, his contact ships from Japan straight to you. (or at least in my case)
