  1. I really like these. I bought the darker brown version last year which were nice but still too big after sizing down half to 10.5. I sent them back for a return, but decided to call Bakershoe and just ask for a refund due to how bulbous the toe box was. It just didn't work for me at the time. These do not seem as bad as those, and i have seen the same difference in other peoples posts. These are really making me want to give it another try.

got my red wings today (8112), i'm very happy with the purchase.

  2. Christ I sized down a whole size on my GTS and probably could have gone another .5

Same thing happened when I ordered Iron Rangers last winter. Went from 11" to 10.5" and am pretty sure I could have gone down to a 10" if not wearing a thick sock.

Hey guys I was wondering what would you recommend for a good winter boot. Also do the red wing Iron Ranger run large?

Yup, half a size for most but there are always exceptions.

  3. one of the worst posts in sufu history. vans are for skateboarding - or at least casual living. not for pussyfooting around. in my neck of the woods, crispy clean vans are the easiest way to spot a kook.

nikes, jordans... keep em clean. keep em for yourself, for that matter.

vans look their best when they're shredded. holes in the canvas and the soles. faded from the sun.

...expect a photo essay on my worn in vans in the not-so-distant future. these will do for now:

I love this photo of Henry at a Minor Threat show

  4. ^^^^ I like that one... nice classic, solid belt.

Here's a question I've noticed lately... People are wearing their belts to the side instead of in the front. Now I do know of two reasons for this...

1.) they work on cars and don't want the buckle to scratch the paint

2.) they want an easy off belt so they can swing it around and hit someone.

Now the big issue I have is seeing people wearing their belts like this, but to me they're should wear it backwards, as if you have to pee, you can't undo your fly because your belt is between the front of your pants. This can only be fixed by wearing the buckle to the left of the body, not to the right...

I know it's crazy but I just don't understand how people can wear their belts like that? Help me out here..

I learned to wear my belt like that from old musicians. It was to keep the from getting buckle rash on your guitar etc... I only do it when on stage playing a show, but sometimes didnt get a chance to change from sweaty clothes afta so the belt stayed there. you can look at many old instrument and see this mark. Not saying this is the reason the people you are seeing do it, but this is one definite reason that I know of.

    illumin8em,what a great find.like the slideshow a lot.

    +rep.

thanks, same to you. some models resemble those that you have posted of red wings.

Man that boot care manual is some racist shit! It's amazing what they got away with back then and to some extent it's still happening today. It would be nice to see chief chippewa scalp the narrator.

I was quite surprised myself when looking through it the first time.

  6. Just picked these vintage Chippewa boots, but they are too big. I had been looking for the Red Wing version to pop up somewhere for some time now, and thought these would be a good substitute. Wish i could wear them. They have never been worn, still in box with boot care manual.

And... inspired by almostnice's Red Wing catalog post, this is the little Chippewa Charlie Boot care Manual that was in the box.

  7. I really like these boot, and if they fit I would keep and wear them to death, but they are too big. The have never been worn, or even laced up from what i can tell (well other that the boot that i loosely laced for the photo)original box and even the little Chippewa Charlie boot manual. Looking through the manual, I think these are the "Red Cedar Sport" boot.

They are size 11EE. I was going to hit them with Obenauf's LP, but the leather is still very supple. I just put these on ebay as well, but will just end the auction if someone wants them.

  9. Question for those who have bought older vintage boots, a boot that has needed some rehab before wearing.

How do you know when a boot is too far gone? For example, browsing ebay, one comes across a pair of vintage leather boots/shoes that are tempting. You would only have the picture in auction to go by. Are there any signs/things to watch out for? Do we know how far the magic of Obenauf's can go in bringing a boot back to life?

Obviously the quality of the maker, as well as the boots desirability to the buyer matter, and could cause someone to over look more serious problems or wear, but i am just talking about the condition of the boot.

I have been watching auctions and trying to figure the formula out, but have found confidence so far.

    Any hints, tips advice...

  10. thinking of buying a used martin 000-16rgte for $1250..

    thoughts anyone?

I would say it just depends on what and where you plan on playing it. I have never liked nor do not see a use for a cutaway if you are not going to be playing past 12th fret (not saying that you don't, but most acoustic players are going to fall in the category of not) . I think this model has that fishmen onboard pickup. I have not been impressed by them, though i understand the lure if you are going to be playing out, there are just better options.

I have played but not owned a 000-16. I did however own a 000-18. Both sitka tops, both mahogany body, but not cutaway. I loved the 000-18 for the first couple of weeks, but after recording, and playing out i realized it was a week guitar sound if trying to blend. Lacked distinction among other intruments unless played louder or turned up louder, but then the distintness came from volume level not guitar sound. I ended up selling and getting a D-18GE, and have been satsfied for 3 years. It is an incredible, had it modified a little to even out the low end.

So, if the 16 series is what you are looking for, and you were not partial to the cutaway, and the onboard pickup, I would bet you could find used something even better priced. Otherwise go for it.
