  1. Interesting that we don't talk a lot about Western boots, engineer boots, or logger boots. There are some sites that specialize in those, sometimes mixing with erotica. I've had engineers and loggers, but never a real comfortable pair of either. But I have yet to order to-measure from White's or Wesco too. As for Western boots - I always like them and have had many super comfortable ones. Growing up in California and spending summers on a ranch in Oregon, I loved them. When I moved to New York many years later, I realized that around here they were associated with gigolos, Midnight Cowboy and all. Too much like a costume, sort of like trying to wear a fedora hat.

I wear a fedora hat everyday! Or my newsboy, but mostly my fedoras...

  2. Greg,

Those are exactly the ones. They're really comfortable. A later version had a padded collar and then the new version looks totally different. You're right, they're just roughout jungle boots.

    Blake:

Which Wescos did you get. I remember when I got mine that the company told me to remove the supplied insole till they stretched out a bit, as they were very tight on me when I first go mine too. They've since loosed up a bit but do take a bit of muscle to remove...

  3. Because the Marine Corps and Army are also wearing what is called a desert boot!! My step-son got these Danners at the Parris Island Marine base clothing sales depot:

I have a pair of the desert boot from the first Iraq war from 1990 and really like them. They don't make that style anymore though and they're tough to find. They're really kind of light weight compaired to the current boot.

  4. wet marble + shoes = broken neck

I almost busted my ass walking into my building this morning

nothing more slippery than wet marble and shoes with leather soles like the shoes i'm wearing today

Just a side note: but how come when you watch old movies the cops or detectives are always running around (in the rain) with what has to be leather soled dress shoes, and they never fall?

Chicken: nice wear on those semi's

Blake: Post as soon as you can!

  5. you're right on this, herringbone pants (correct me if i'm wrong), are not too minimalist/classic and seem like more of a trend of the moment/accent piece. you wont be wearing these pants ALL the time, but sometimes, you gotta change it up outta blue/black jeans. sides, if you think you look good in it and feel confident in it, that's all that really matters.

Herringbone pants are not a new thing. Didn't railroad workers only wear that? And they're pretty minimalist/classic to me or at least for the last 150 years or so...

  6. A good example of the difference in use between horsehide and shell cordovan is A-2 jackets. They are made from non-shell, the upper cutaneous layers of the horse, especially around the horse's chest and rump areas. It has wrinkles and range marks. You can tell that shell corcovan is from the subcutaneous layers because it has no pore or follicle holes. Hence its smoothness.

Another reason horsehide was used around WWII was that it is more water resistant than steerhide.

farmers were also phasing out horses for tractors by the millions and horse was cheap.

I prefer horsehide to any other for a work jacket. And you're a fool to buy lambskin jackets from the mall, unless you want a jacket that will rip and fall apart in a year....

  7. I really don't think so. It looks like it is just a few stitches into the heel, which wouldn't have any effect on water resistance. However, I do think that this is certainly not normal quality finishing on an Indy boot.

I don't know, To me, Alden shouldn't have ANY quality finishing problems. I know my indy's were not what I'd consider perfect and these are for sure not.

They should just open a seconds store and stop trying to pass off seconds as firsts.

  8. I looked at the quote and I assume it's the "Classic Styling" and not the "You're so Hot" comment.

I personally wouldn't use the word "Classic" to describe your look. It's more a mix of modern and old. You are in fact wearing clothing of a vintage nature, but you are wearing it in a modern way. Maybe use .."Modern Vintage"

Classic might more be used for the "dressed up" look of a suit and tie or more formal wear. and not work wear.

  9. I think any of these shoes can look good with jeans. I too like Vass's lasts, and think Alden's lasts are blobby and undistinguished even though I have 2 pairs of Aldens and no Vass's! I like shell cordovan shoes, but my favorites are always calfskin. As much as I dig the great shoe porn photos at Style Forum or Ask Andy, I hang out more here to talk about shoes because I prefer boots to shoes. And this thread rocks for that. And it jibes with something else I like - my own slant on boots is not what the banned guy says at all, but a mid-century nostalgia/military/workwear angle that is goes along with boots. You know, the kind of thing imaged so well by old movies, bell-ringing telephones, hot-lead typesetting, garish pulp cover art, old leather jackets, khakis, and selvedge denim. For the footwear side of that, this thread has it covered!

    Amen brother...

  10. ===One reason I've never had any Wescos. I do like their chunky clunky boots, they cool and rugged looking. And I never mind a long break-in period either - since these boots are basically designed for decades of use. However, I don't fit any Jobmasters off the rack, and hesitate to special order since their process doesn't offer many fitting options like White's. There's a Wesco dealer in New Jersey I'll try one of these days - maybe I can find a fit....

Wesco's have a foot tracing thing just like Whites. That's what I did when I got my wesco boss custom made....

  11. ===What country are you in? Would you like me to ask the Alden shop in NYC?

Speaking of defects, I agree with you. I don't find their work very precise at all. I once spoke to an Alden employee who had been a shoemaker before coming to the company. He told me that he himself found their quality and workmanship not all that great and showed me some details about the inside of the show to prove his point.

I agree at least on the Alden 405's I got direct from the factory.

The mentioned it earlier in this thread about stitching on the toe that was off on the left shoe. The boots fit fantastic, but to me, I would have labeled them as 2nds.

I don't know about if they even have 2nds as I haven't seen any. But a manufacturer like Wesco has a ton of them on their site, which makes me believe that perhaps they are really into making sure that their boots are perfect, otherwise they wouldn't have so many 2nds.
