  1. = distressed. Some people pay good money for that sort of thing.

That's what I tried to sell to the gf (it was a gift from her). "Hey, now it really looks like a conductor's shirt. Not much appeased.

Anyone know - Are the 37s (assuming still made) the slimmest bucklebacks?

  2. I'm a 40L, I bought my normal size - a L. It fits fairly similar to a RRL L, a bit slimmer, with narrower arms. 19" shoulders, 22" chest.

It's great - I think it may be on sale at some online retailers (I bought it in town). Of course, the second time I wore it, I sat on a janky chair that ripped the tail. Have to try to fix it now.

  3. I'm torn on the direction that LVC is taking. If the price goes up as much as some of you have guessed, I doubt I'll buy much. But right now I'm really pleased with the availability, both locally in brick and mortar, and online. I've been able to pick up a few pieces on sale, a rarity in the past. Also, the fit of the shirts suits me ideally.

A few things - new 66s (USA), a chambray pop over, and a western shirt. Also my 2005 or 2005 47s, for reference. I'm a bit worried that I won't be able to really soak the 66s (last pair on deep discount) b/c they fit pretty perfectly now, but, oh well, discounter's dilemma - I have quite a few pairs that have never been washed. Having said that, I'm sure I'll drop a hamburger patty on them the first wear.

    1) SOLD. RRL olive/tan chambray workshirt in size L. Worn once, washed, then decided it was a bit loose for me. Very detailed military pattern with breathing holes on the back and pits. Selvage at the plackets and gussets, metal buttons, strap collar, triple stitching, reinforced armpits and elbows. Washed out appearance. Retail was $210. $70, shipped.

From Neiman Marcus, but doesn't have the FP hangtag for some reason (may be in the deep recesses of my closet). Retail was $95. $50 shipped.

Eternal 866 bootcut jeans. Tagged a 34, fits on the hips so the waist measures out a bit more. Slim thigh, bootcut. Only worn a few times. Soaked and woolite darked. Almost no fading. Beautiful hairy denim, hidden rivets, leather patch, red line selvage. The rise is quite low. Well made Japanese jeans.

  9. I'm sort of ashamed about how large my workshirt collection has become. Some of them (repros):

    img0798p.jpg

Post O'alls. Not sure if it is more chambray or more oxford. They use great buttons, but their sleeves are way too short:

    img0799k.jpg

    img0800vo.jpg

And a vintage Big Mac oddity: 50/50, 70s collar, no triple stitching, very lighweight weeve, but thick selvage lines:

    img0795j.jpg

    img0796e.jpg

  10. Here's a pair of ancient Aldens that may be on the wrong side of age. One can imagine some nickle-fucking, shitcanned Yankee kicking many a family dog as the Sox choked away yet another pennant, year after year. In my size and only three bucks, but I have a feeling they will wind up in the donation bin fairly soon. It is heartening to see a pair so well worn, though:

  11. I imagine wabi-sabi is closer to being the aesthetic explanation for why the run-off chainstitch is attractive as a stylistic detail rather than the cause (as is the case with all sorts of common repro details, like leg-twist). The cause is probably actually authenticity to a vintage detail.

So why was the detail included in vintage workshirts? Maybe because the shirts were quickly and cheaply produced? Maybe as a quick signal to buyers that the shirts were chainstitched and thus hardy? Dunno.

  12. I'm sure it's been asked and answered many times, but what is the purpose of the loose chain-stitched threads on the gussets of vintage workshirts?
