  1. That's not really the case with these two. The top one (SC 1947) is finished with a pink thread - that I get. But the other (W+H) isn't finished in the same way. There is no finishing thread per se and the twill changes direction through the white and black stripe.

It's just stylistic. The principle is the same. Changing the direction of the twill isn't difficult, just look at broken twill or hickory twill. I think w+h is just going for something a little unique.

  2. I'm looking for some high quality slubby jeans. I just got a pair of Sugar Cane 47s in the mail that I'm about to send back because the fit just doesn't suit me well. They're too big in the seat and they give me little hip flares.

I'm in the market for something straight cut like the 47's, just a little slimmer. I really like the slubby-type denim that Sugar Cane uses so I'd like them to be comparable to that.

    Any help is appreciated.

SC47s aren't that slubby. But if you DO want something really slubby but a bit slimmer than the 47s, I would check out the Oni Blue and Samurai 500. Both have very slubby denim with a slimmer cut.

are skull jeans the slimmest jean company for japanese denim?

I like somets alot but the thigh measurements are too big.

John Bull makes some very skinny cuts with excellent denim. I don't recall if they all have selvedge outseams, but the denim is the same as their other jeans I believe.

  3. My girlfriend is currently in Osaka/Kansai region and will buy me a pair of jeans of my choice. However, I've been searching on several forums for a month now, and I still don't know how to decide. The choices are overwhelming!

I'm looking for a super-slubby, unique selvedge that you can't buy in the States unless you proxied it from Japan. I'd love for pocket-lining and something interesting for the pocket bags. My budget is JPY 25,000.

As far as the cut, I like the FC 1108 fit, and my Samurai 710xx is coming from Blue in Green in the next few days. Maybe my next pair will either be slim fit like these two, or more relaxed like a Levi's 501 cut. I'd appreciate choices on either of these two cuts.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

    Thanks!

You might check out steam locomotive. I think they make a pretty slubby jean.

  4. Even though the 660 is supposed to be a 66 style cut, it is not very tapered at all. It is pretty straight from the knee down. I'd look for other 1966 cuts, especially levis LVC 1966 501.

  5. Ed, any updates on your pairs? I'm guessing it'll take a few more weeks though...Also, which fabric #'s did you go with? I'm still having trouble deciding on mine, even with samples in front of me...13 just sticks out for me, but the feel of 14 is just right...and yet the slub of 23 lures me in...decisions decisions! It shouldn't be this hard...haha

they told me they were sold out of no. 13. I'm kinda bummed, based on what you said about the vintage quality of it. That is kind of what I was looking for.

  8. Meant to do this a lot earlier, but anyways here are the fabric samples for posterity although a bit hard to see, admittedly. I can also copy the brief descriptions of each on here by request if needed...

Since you offered... could you post a brief description of each? at least of the indigo denim fabrics?

  9. hi,

i know this might be a difficult question to answer but maybe somebody can help me out...

I am looking for a pair of selvedge denim with a loose but slightly tapered fit! I need a boxy seat and rather big thighs but stil like a narrow leg opening!

Much like a Levis 1955 501 just tapered....

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    cbass

the sugarcane 66 cut might fit the bill- it has a slight taper, but i certainly wouldn't call it a narrow leg opening. sized up samurai 710 might also work.

  10. does 2nd chainstitch? because i don't want to buy a pair of 5000bk, pay a bunch of fees, then pay for bart to sf, then 20 for self edge to do it. -_-

also, could someone recommend me a good proxy to use to order from 2nd? would sharpservice be good?

2nd does chainstitch. no proxy needed. order direct. they accept paypal.

  11. i had SDA-103's and they are literally steel. i maybe wore them 3 months, and there was no sign of fading in the creases at all.

i liked the fit very much. the front and back rise is short enough that it is fitted and doesn't look like diaper ass like repro's do.

out of all the japanese brands that i've handled in person, in terms of fit and finish/quality - Studios rank #1, then Flat head, then Samurais

even the patch was a beauty in itself - super thick

i believe the sda patches are made of goatskin, which gives them a more rugged feel. it really is a nice patch.

  12. i don't recommend an initial wash on these. i normally prefer to get the starch out but these definitely got a weird pattern (kinda marbled, not very cool) on them after i washed them. i'd just wear them raw. incidentally there next to no shrinkage after a hot wash and dry for me. my 30's are around a 35" at the moment. for real. these are already pretty vanity sized and they also stretch a fair amount.

  13. ^youre correct in that, but i believe pbj and sda both use 100% cotton thread as well, am i right?

i can't verify that the sdas are 100% cotton thread but they are the only pair i've had with no thread breakage. i think the threads on those are the exception, rather than the norm. and don't the pbjs have super thick stitching a la onis et al?
