  1. Hah!

We all wear costumes, the only difference between being a dress up doll and a real person is that a real person chooses which costume to wear...

I'm glad we think along the same lines, although I would disagree about the meaning of the word "costume."

  2. Where do you live, what do you look like, what do you do, what do you like to do in your spare time, what do you think is beautiful, what do you think is fun, what do you think is fulfilling and meaningful?

The reason I ask is before I give any advice, I usually like to know about a person. You have to know yourself, like with anything else in life - otherwise you may end up like a dressed up doll. Remember The Emperor's New Clothes.

  3. There are really a ton of places in all those cities. The only good advice I can give is book NOW for Paris and Amsterdam, because you will not be able to find a place by just dropping in.

This is a good hostel organisation, http://www.hihostels.com/web/index.en.htm

Some hostels are pretty crappy, but if it's your first time backpacking, you'll be having so much fun that you won't even notice. I also recommend staying in hostels as opposed to hotels because you can easily make friends. Enjoy your trip.

  4. Yea, I am not going with any expectations of finding some great bargains. You are right, even back than, Ann's was the only store where I did not buy anything but a belt. Unlike Dries and Louis, where I bought plenty. Still, it'll be fun - I haven't been in Antwerp in 4 years, I'm sure a lot has changed.

I'm also thinking of taking a video camera and making an Antwerp shopping guide video to put up on youtube.

  5. /\ Thanks a lot - it confirms what I heard. Yes, I am striking Cocodrillo off the list (moreso that it's out of the way), and replacing with Elsa.

I made a Google map, check it out - it's pretty tight, the only place out of the way is the little beer store, but it's the best in Antwerp as far as I know (been there before myself). I love Belgian beer, so that's a definite.

  6. /\ Thank you! Why does Cocodrillos and Louis suck these days? Can you elaborate? I am all for striking things off the list (althoug it's hard to strike Louis off). I thought Louis is still the best place to get Margiela and Raf. Where else should I go?

    So far on the list

    Ann Demeulemeester store

    Dries van Noten store

    Walter

    Louis

    Veronique Branquinho store

I also would like to know who carries Stephen Schneider and A.F.Vandevorst (for the Mrs.). Thanks. EDIT: Found that Schneider has his own store - cool.

  7. Bump. Going there in two weeks. I know the major shopping scene well - looking for designer consignment stores and stores that have young designers. Also, any hotel recommendations for under $150 (or even $100) would be appreciated. I found this place, looks very quaint and cheap, and it's in Zuid, which works.

  8. Okies no worries.....just wasnt sure about their 1000Yen Handling fees charged twice. Can you explain more on that?

I said "fast and reliable" - you can dispute their charges all you want, i was commenting on the level of service and level of professionalism.

  9. So, I finally broke down and agreed to go on a beach vacation.

Where to go in the Carribean? I want some place chill and relaxing, and that's neither spring break crowd nor old fart crowd. What are my options? Also, are there travel forums where I can do some research? Thanks.

  10. What is there to do during the day and the night?

(if there is a thread on this I couldn't find it)

WALK. It's the most gorgeous city EVAR. It's like walking in a fairy tale. The locals are very friendly and most young people speak some English. There is a local English language paper that lists clubs, etc.

  11. I am surprised that Hudson is so expensive. I've been inside the rooms in both, and if it's such a small difference, than Hotel on Rivington wins hands down. I once rented a room at Hudson for $149. You should sign up on their website to get special offers. Also, I believe there was someone on these boards who had a hook up at HoR.

  12. I do not recommend buying cologne anywhere outside of reputable places. The fake market is HUGE, and you are dealing with chemicals that can damage your skin. If you want discounted Creed, go to any Bond NYC store - they used to be Creed stores, but they now have rebranded and are liquidating their Creed stock at 50% off.

P.S. Green Irish Tweed is my favorite cologne.

  13. how bout places near soho.

paron jersey ignorance whats the closest train stop from path to get to little italia?

Little Italy IS neare SoHo. If you want a good cuf of coffee in Soho, Joe's has a stand in the Alessi store on Greene - however it's not a cozy environment (but the coffee SERIOUSLY rocks).

  14. Considering the cities you have already selected and the criteria you're mentioning, I'd add Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague, Budapest and Istanbul to your list.

2nd. can't go wrong with any of those - Prague is like walking in a fairy tale (full of tourists, but what can you do).

  15. absolutely not. i'm not a tourist and if im even close to downtown i go there.

even if you think its overrated you can't argue the quality of the food

Absolutely Yes. You might have as well recommended Tavern on the Green for dinner (pukes).

  16. Just wanted to clarify a few things. I banned red to show him that I will not tolerate insults, especially from a noob (has anyone ever seen me insult someone on these boards for how they dress?). Banning him had nothing to do with his sense of style (whatever that means to him). So he came to whine here, with his panties in a bunch. That's fine.

I setup SZ as an alternative to tFS, not as an alternative to SF. I wanted to focus on avant-garde fashion that has a certain creative meaning beyond just clothes, and not on models and celebrities, which is the unfortunate way tFS has been going (although it's still a very valuable fashion forum). I did not expect that many SF posters will also sign up there - I originally invited only one person from SF, darkanimal - the rest were from tFS, who happened to x-post on SF.

It is true, I can be harsh at times, but I stated on SZ at the outset that I don't have to be and I will not be politically correct, and I will steer the forum in a certain direction, that is all. I definitely do not mean for the forum to be intimidating, people are welcome to come there to share their views. If you don't like what you see on SZ, that's all right with me. Sometimes I myself do not like the way the discussion go there, especially when it starts concentrating on owning expensive clothes. That's why one time I publicly told one member that we are not there to fetishize pricey clothes, but to discuss creative aspects of fashion.

As far as NIN, I must agree with onemancult, The Fragile was an amazing record (those critics comments about being bloated is bullshit, the record has perfect continuity, each song falls into place), and the last good one from Trent. I don't listen to Tool, btw, not sure where you got that idea.

    That's about it.

  17. Budget?

Huge 2nd Hotel on Rivington. Farking nice. I am thinking to rent a suite and throw my wife's Bday party there.

For a restaurant, I can recommend L'Ecole (that is if you still have a few weeks ahead of you, book now!). It's a part of French Culinary Institute in Soho - the chefs there really put out, because they are judged on performance, and it's an incredible bargain for the kind of food you get. The waiters are super-professional - it's a great experience. If you want something more down to earth and relaxed, I can recommend Jean-Claude or Cafe du Jardin, both excellent and not too hard on the wallet. Blue Ribbon Bakery (not to be confused with Blue Ribbon, where you'll wait 2 hours to be seated) is another choice. A little pricey (unless you get a burger), but well worth it. See if they can sit you downstairs withe exposed brick walls an a fire place.

My last advice: DO NOT go to midtown or meatpacking district at night on that day if you want to keep the evening romantic.
