  1. oh! honestly, the entire cal experience was a little underwhelming for me. for academics, only a few of the professors were outstanding and the rest were just alright, but the GSIs were fantastic. go to office hours as much as you can and make sure your profs/GSI's know who you are. it will help you so much if/when you need to get letters of recommendation. i also kind of regret not taking any DeCals cause they offer some really cool shit. try to teach one! my friend taught one and apparently a lot of his students were hella crushing on him.

as far as meeting people, i was fortunate enough to make a lot of great friends in the linguistics department, but not so much in the french department. cal is full of weirdos that take themselves too seriously. as annoying as they are, check out the clubs that attack you on Sproul, it might be worth while if you find something you're interested in! i wanted to be a part of Superb but i didn't have time for any of that shit.

if your major permits, really try to get involved in URAP. i didn't get the opportunity to do research because there was nothing going on for linguistics and french students. if not, ask your professors if they're doing any research that you can help with.

finally, get involved in all of the weird shit that goes down at cal: 4/20 festivities at memorial glade, the naked run in main stacks (never done it or witnessed it), the big game vs. stanford, etc.

  2. The other day I hella saw some fobby asian chick straight up trip and eat asphalt cause she miscalculated how to walk downhill wearing creepers and I didn't stop to help her. I didn't stop mostly because I don't like it when I fall and people try to pull me back up. The part that was so funny to me was the fact that she was still gripping her umbrella as she was sitting on the ground lolll

  3. i'm headed to UCSD this fall.  Considering how many bad things i've heard about it (Triton Eye, UC Socially Dead) it was a bit of a disappointing choice for me. I got into USC (couldn't afford, 64k a year, fuck that) and was waitlisted at UCLA.

"college is what we make of it" but i can't help but feel a bit bummed.  Oh well.  Just gonna look for people to chill with.  i have no doubts there are plenty.

anybody have things to say about it?

If you really hate it, you can try to transfer into UCLA if your GPA is high enough. I knew people that transferred from UCSC and UCSD to Cal.

I walked in the graduation ceremony at UC Berkeley this past May, but definitely not graduated yet lol. I'm taking the most boring summer school class (French Medieval Feminist Literature) with the most chill teacher though. I'm going to move out of my place in less than a month :(

Buuuuuuut I'm gonna move to a pretty sweet apartment in Lyon where I get to study abroad for a year for free :D ty FAFSA.

  4. traded in my 360 today, going to put my remaining credit towards a ps4 or gtav, not sure which yet.

used some of the credit i got to get ni no kuni which is pretty much the first jrpg i've ever played.

i'm probably like ~90 hours into Ni No Kuni, about to enter the final boss battle. it definitely doesn't take that much time at all to beat, but there are soooo many side quests (errands/bounty hunts) and i just want to complete them all before i go fuck up the white witch. i've also spent a lot of time just fucking around in the game like going to the casino, trying to catch specific familiars, finding all the hidden chests, exploring, etc. it's super fun, i enjoyed it a lot!

before i started Ni No Kuni, i played FFVII as my first jrpg. i had every intention of beating all of the weapons, but i wasn't about to spend that much more time trying to multiply Knights of the Round & Quadra Magic to do it. i could definitely see myself playing it again after a while, except my only hesitation is the time investment in trying to get the right color/gender chocobo to get the gold one.

i have a bunch of games i need to play but i don't have time :(

  5. They've been lucky, the reality of it is that its not a safe place.

    Check this shit out:

I'd have to agree with Kiya. Very recently a friend of mine and her mother got robbed at gunpoint at 11am and apparently it was in the "nicer" parts of Oakland.

I'd recommend somewhere in the East Bay rather than South SF or Daly City since you're gonna be working in Benicia. Why not Berkeley? It'll be a bit more expensive than Richmond or El Cerrito, which are closer to Benicia, but it's a lot nicer of a town.

I think Richmond used to be considered one of the most dangerous cities in America (with something like the most murders per capita at some point). If you look online Oakland is #15 on that list.

I live in Downtown Berkeley currently and it's pretty great. There's a good amount of homeless people (old people, crazy people, teenagers) on Shattuck Ave. and Telegraph Ave. but for the most part they don't bother you. They'll ask you for a cigarette or some change and then walk off. It's generally a safe area, lots of campus and city police going around. You can probably find a good deal on places if you find people to live with on craigslist, but if you're not too keen on living with strangers you can find apartments in Berkeley within your price range, most likely a little more. If you're interested in the area, feel free to send me a PM.

  6. my trusty umbrella finally gave out and i need suggestions on a well constructed umbrella that's not ridiculously expensive (probably willing to spend $100-150). i've had the same Ralph Lauren one for many years and honestly i'd probably get the same exact one if they had it, but they don't and $275 on another color is a bit much for settling.

pretty much looking for a stick umbrella. i like the London Undercover ones, but the prints aren't that great. i've also heard good things about the Brooks Brothers umbrellas, however it looks like a lot of the pieces are made of plastic. any suggestions or brands would help! it's perpetually rainy as fuck in Berkeley and i need to get a new one before the semester starts

  7. After the fall semester ended, I spent nearly two weeks back in San Jose spending time with family for the holidays and it fucking drove me insane. Nothing to do, driving everywhere (it's not the driving, but the lack of walking) and the water in SJ tastes gross. I couldn't be happier being back in Berkeley. It's also ridiculously cold in SJ, much colder than the east bay.

  8. i have a stack of books i want to finish reading by the end of my winter break.

This started off slow, but ended up being pretty good. Historical fiction about Ernest Hemingway and his first wife Hadley.

Finally got around to reading the novel (as opposed to having only read the short story version)

    Halfway through this.

Planning to read the new J. K. Rowling book although I haven't heard anything good about it and also Through the Language Glass to get myself thinking about linguistics before the spring term starts

  9. how fun was trying on hats in barneys with timber and sam??

btw that haggard bitch nearly ruined burritos for me

we were hella about to get kicked out of barneys for that. also, fuck that crazy sour cream claw lady

  10. first post in v5! friday is a holiday and i want to go back home to my parents' house to visit my family, but i'm staying in Berkeley trying to catch up and get ahead on school work instead. i also should see about the demonstrations and unnecessary police force against protesters, but again, i have too much other shit to do. i'm also not trying to get beat by batons.

this happened on i think wednesday
