  1. I'm in. A friend of mine posts on NerdNyc.com and they have event gatherings all the time.

Sheduled events calendar and all. They get a nice turnout and you'd be surprised how much you have in common besides the obvious.

There's a cool place in Williamsburg called barcade. Never been there, but planning to and this sounds like just the reason to do it.

Just an idea: let's all get those corny name tags that say "Hello my name is..." and write our ST names on it and our real names.

I can design the stickers and have them ready at the door.

    Who's in?

    When?

Can I ask you something? These sunglasses: they're really nice. Are they like government issue, or do you guys all go to the same store together?

  2. The gallery on N 4th and Driggs used to be a chicken market.

My cousins and I would peak in and see them cutting off the chicken's heads.

My grandmother was born and lived there on N 4th & Driggs (217 N 4th), my Mom on Havemeyer.

God that neighborhood changed. Back then we weren't allow off the corner!

Anyway, I haven't been to the fashion spots yet, but Fortunato's bakery rocks (it always has.)

it's on Manhattan Avenue and Ainslie Street.

A great neighborhood spot to eat is La Locanda. 432 Graham Ave.

Sorry, no info about clothes, I'm Italian and food usually comes first! : )

It depends on the design and brand for me. Personally, I would not spend $80. But there are market forces out there that lead people to do unnecessary things. This is conspicuous consumption. I'm still not 'getting a deal' on a $20 tee.

I could jack some white tees from the Salvation Army if I really wanted to prove how much better I am than all the slaves to fashion. But of course I am one....

after jacking said shirts, i would then proceed to spend 300 dollars on jeans and 200 dollars on sneakers just to balance it out.

    LOL

  4. Most people here are considered "smart shoppers".

We tend to observe what others are wearing just because we are into fashion.

Therefore we'll notice it when someone's wearing the same thing or brand.

My cousin was wearing Onitsuka's and I said "Nice Onitsuka's" he had NO clue what I was talking about.

If I was wearing the same sneaker he wouldn't notice and couldn't care less.

People like us and women at dress-up affairs pay attention to what people are wearing.

  5. I was shopping today on Broadway and I'm confused as shit!

    1. What makes one t-shirt (worth) $80-$100 and another $20?

I inspected similarly made tees and coundn't discern, besides brand name, any difference in quality or technique or added value. I understand that some tees have added processes like discharge and other things, but some were the same basic tee. Some of the tees were even in the same place (Atrium).

    2. If you're looking at a rack or a wall of tees and the prices for the tees are $20, $40 & $80, which tee are you going for? Why? Is it assumed that the $20 tee is crap or easy to get or on sale, or last seasons?

    3. How does all of this apply to your online spending? How much do you spend online for a tee?

  6. it seems everyone here is extremely well-travelled.

To everyone who mentioned multiple cities/ countries:

have you been to every store in the cities you mention or

visited their web site or heard from someone?

Whether you're at your favorite band's show, a "cinema house", or an art gallery opening, you

can't help but notice them: the hipper-than-thou indie elite clad in pseudo-vintage clothes that cost

more than your average used car. You don't know where these people come from, seeing as you

don't ever encounter them in the real world. Maybe, not unlike roaches, they're afraid of daylight.

They must preen themselves and practice their sneers and glares of contempt until nightfall, when

they scuttle out from under their respective sinks and never fail to congregate at what often seem

like clandestine affairs of which only the select few may partake. They don't need jobs or food.

They subsist on a steady diet of cigarettes, le bier du jour(Pabst Blue Ribbon or Stella Artois), a

trustfund, and mostly importantly, contrived witticisms they lifted from the epliogue of an incredibly

obscure book and/or band's liner notes. OR MAYBE BOTH (ie. Rainer Maria) 'A Better Version of

Me' and 'Letters to a Young Poet', respectively. If you're sick of having to negotiate your way

through a sidewalk crammed full of human chimneys with $200 "I just woke up" haircuts because

they're too busy looking cool to move out of the way for a puny, mere mortal, such as yourself, it's

time for a more drastic measure.

  8. I stayed in touch with my former Art Director from 4 years ago.

When I got fired, I called to ask him if I can put him down as a reference and he had an opening at the place I'm working at now. I had to freelance for about a month (full-time), but it all worked out in the end.

  9. do a search here in superfuture for "screen print" and "t-shirts", it's discussed in detail.

If you need anything else, e-mail me.

    ps, where are you located?

  10. there's alot of differing views here at SF regarding what tees are "best".

    My suggestion is this:

Gather all of your favorite tees. See which ones you like the best for washing, pilling, and see if any have labels of the brand of the tee as opposed to the brand itself.

ie: If it says Gildan as opposed to the name of a clothing company. You're looking for the tee manufacturer, not the company that's selling the screen printed shirt.

Your choice is limited to what you can buy already made. (or pay to have a shirt cut for you, this requires alot of minimums and specs and pattern making, the whole nine.)

For my line: www.TheLifeLtd.com, I'm having my shirts cut to spec and embellished with extras like light embroidery and specialty inks. Depending on the "fit" you want (baggy or fitted), you'll have to find those cuts of tees.

After that whole lot of boring work, you'll need to find a quality printer.

If you're in NY, shoot me an e-mail, I have a guy that does short runs, and his quality is OK. (just OK, nothing earthshattering, but he's one of the few that'll do a short run for a decent price.)

Labels are also done by minimums, I can give you a number of a company in NY that did my initial run.

If any of this seems confusing or unclear, e-mail me and we'll talk.

    Good Luck,

    Rich

  11. he's certainly a better role model than some of the other knuckleheads in hip hop.

I mean, when is the whole guns and hoes thing going to play itself out.

The world could use more positive people like Kanye.

    He dresses "yuppie" and he's a sell-out?

    How about clean-cut.

His pants are at his waist (OMG!!!) and his shirts fit! What a horror!

rogue's gallery is one that does it nicely.

I saw their stuff in Odin.

I can't find a good photo of a discharge print.

besides, a photo would do it no justice.

  13. no one's looking to start a revolution against the upstairs market.

simple discussion of who, what, where and how much.

lame is a matter of taste. is what you wouldn't wear lame? who's to say?

we wouldn't be supertalkers if we didn't want to move forward.

Your shirts are hot, by the way.

  14. ouch! DCTMFC....I'd hate to see you get banned before you reach the 1000 post mark.

10switch, I hear you about not finding 4 cheaper shirts that you like. That makes alot of sense.

but for 100 bucks, do you wear the shit out of it or wear it rarely as compared to cheaper tees?

  15. I did a little tour of NYC shopping sites looking for tees yesterday.

I hit Odin, famous friends, Store, URBN, memes and a few others.

What I saw in "upscale" stores were $98 tees, $28 tees, and everywhere in between.

What a tee shirt wholesales for depends on a couple of things.

For instance, at Odin, they have these beautiful discharge print tees.

That process is time consuming, expensive and labor intensive.

It retailed at around $78 because of those factors and because the owners of Odin have a specific clientele they are catering to. Target customers don't understand discharge and would not buy it.

Some other tees had embellishments like embroidery with screen and other art applications that would cause the price to be higher than the average tee in a mom & pop.

That being said, there were far more tees that had NOTHING special going on. no extra hits, no emb, no foil, no discharge, no perceived value for my money. It all comes down to what the market will bear.

If you spend it, they'll charge for it.

The choice is yours not to shop there.

But let's not knock the stores charging top dollar, because there's someone spending those dollars.

I'd like to hear from a supertalker that spends $98 on a holy grail tee and why.

that's my .03 (extra penny for the length.)

  17. there were old school graf writers there and the mock-subway cars were cool.

but the vibe was a bit contrived.

like the urban version of hanging at an anonymous hipster lounge bar listening to a shitty band because no one's ever heard of them and thinking you're cool....but inviting the press.

    I wasn't feeling it.

then again, I went at 1-2 pm, so maybe it picked up later on.

  18. Ecko threw a block party in Chelsea, NY on Wednesday.

It made some press. I walked through and didn't see anything that made me go

"WOW, I am so fucking glad I walked all the way here to see that!"

bunch of kids in spray masks as an accessory.

there was some cool breakdancing without cardboard.

basically alot of white kids with black sketch books trying to fit in.

PS: why are "urban-wear" tee shirts so fucking long?
