  1. Can anyone recommend a decent sewing machine? I want to start making my own dress shirts because no one makes 14.5" neck sizes. I would consider myself a beginner, but I know how to use a sewing machine & serger somewhat.

I've been looking at a few models from Janome. Budget would be $500 max (ideally around $300) for the sewing machine. I don't need a serger right now.

  2. I've been looking for a parka and that one is the nicest yet.

Has anyone handled it yet and any feedback?

I IMed jet about this but I thought I'd post it here too. The parka is light but has a nice sherling lining that is removable for "warmer" winter days. Great piece.

Ok. I'm not talking about the girl cause her outfit is nice. But I've been back no longer than a week after probably a year long hiatus and I swear I've seen that guy wear that pair of 80s hair band pants in about 30 pictures. I'm sure he's the only one that has them, I'm just wondering does he have any other pair of pants?

  4. are the majority of male designers gay?'

(im half retarded by the way)

Speaking from personal experience, for some reason most male designers that design menswear are straight. Just something I've observed.

  5. Personally I think if you have the money, invest in an industrial machine. You can generally get good deals on ebay or craigslist. My personal favorite are the juki ddl 8700. The difference is they're much faster, stronger. Its a little hard to get used to at first but after some solid practice just sewing back and forth you can stitch straight lines with ease and crank shit out much faster. I got mine for around 700.00 (including table)

As for home sewing machines, don't bother with computerized fancy shit. Most of the time they're a waste and generally geared toward grandmas making fancy pillow cases. All you need is a solid machine that does foward and backstitches and is smooth. My personal favorite home machine are Janomes. they're smooth, quiet and thread really easy. I have a Janome 4618LE that I got off ebay for about 200.00.

If you want to do t-shirts/knits (hoodies..etc) or finish seams, look into getting a serger/marrow machine. I have a brother 1034D that's discountinued but still solid. Again, you can get it dirt cheap off ebay. I personally think industrial marrows are a bit overkill and unneccasry.

You also want a really good iron to press your seams and garments. I use a rowenta DG5030, its the one we used at parsons. It's heavy so you don't have to press hard, has a base that you fill with water (that is also heat proof so you can set the iron on it and leave it on) and a professional grade steam shot. Only iron you'll ever need.

And while you're at it, go get yourself "The readers digest's complete guide to sewing". the only sewing reference book you'll need.

    Good luck

  6. I've been looking for a parka and that one is the nicest yet.

are you talking about the parka vest? It's heavy, thick fabric (Don't remember what it was) and really warm. IMO one of the better pieces for fall.

  7. I would love to see some of that leatherwear in person. Any news on US shops carrying the line?

NYC - Odin, Camouflage, Hollander and lexer

LA/Santa Monica - Scout, Hollywood trading co.

    Boston - Stel's

    Seattle - Blackbird

The leather is soft and real nice. Robert uses the same aging/treatments on the leather that he did at Cloak.

As for people wondering about the fit, I would say its slim, but not really Dior skinny. I'd say on the par of Helmut Lang in terms of pieces I've seen on the fit. Just right imo.

  8. bumping this cause I searched before I posted a new thread on his AW0708 stuff and found this. Glad to see people are feeling it.

I'm excited to get a feel of some of these pieces come summers end.

I'm currently working with robert at his studio. The quality is really top notch especially at his prices. I personally feel the new spring line is better in quality than his fall (marginally though, fall is still great), probably because fall was the first time he's worked with the production factory. But still good nonetheless. The washed leather and denim is really good imo.

  9. ^ thanks for that link.. been trying to find a decent shop for new frames for awhile! would rep if i could.

def check out the store. they have literally anything you can think of in any size. Look out for the all wood frames, sick shit.

  10. Well if you invested some time looking into fashion illustration manuals and books your come to realize that the actual look of the model holds no weight. In fashion illustration your trying to get the point across of what the garment is and how it moves and functions

If you do not understand proportions and movement of the body then you cannot design clothes. It doesn't matter if you design with sketches of clothes on figures or if you design purely with flats. It also doesn't matter if you're sketching for design purposes or fashion illustrating (illustration is generally done to convey a mood of a piece/designer/collection, things you see in magazines..but it still has to make sense)

When you start working in the real world you will realize how important it is to understand the body in design. If you don't, you will end up designing clothes on paper that do not make sense and you will either waste your time trying to solve these issues on your own, making really bad clothes or spending way too much money to hire someone to draft the clothes for you while they try to figure out your poor sketches.

  11. alternatively, i think you're in the right place to break Leon through the wall. all of the recent memorable american labels have been new york based...albeit, they've mostl;y been in womenswear, but you can't discount biggies like thom browne.

edit: my heart still cries when i realize that for whatever reason im disallowed from commenting at yr LJ. was it that ask me questions post? i was not trying to be an ahole, i intended it to be more of a whimsical thing, but hey...

Sorry, when you commented at that time I was getting mad hate from silly kids on LJ communities I used to be a member of. So anything annoying I blocked.

All the "fashion" communities were more interested in starting drama than discussing fashion..and since I am generally passionate about my work/hobbies, everyone singled me out as some sort of pretentious faux-expert. What's your LJ? I'll add you.

  12. So im in the market for a new phone as my SE 750 is finally dying

i need something new and havent looked seriously at a phone in awhile

    <$500 preferably

looking for a smartphone if it doesnt cost me an arm and a leg

let's see what everyone is using

Just got a Blackberry World phone for business. Cost me $100.00 with 2year contract (verizon). Conteplated about getting an Iphone, but for business it's pretty shitty. Can't cut and paste text. I found the blackberry shhortcuts better than iphones interface. Edge network is slow as fuck too. I'm sure this all has been ranted about on the iphone thread. But yeah I like my blackberry world.

  13. Damn, you would swear that M8 was 100 grand or something...

Good buy Mouko! I'm looking at the D-LUX3 for a nice lil' point and shoot. (my canon has about had it.)

I heard really good things about the dlux too. In fact, I haven't heard anything bad about leicas so far. I'm really happy with my investment. Lately I've been into getting things I would like to pass down to my future kids, so I've been really into great cameras and watches lately. In case people were wondering, the m8s go for about 4700 new, I picked it up for about 3600.00 from a friend of a friend, barely used.

  14. You dont act one way, then the next day you're praising high end designers callin lagerfeld "legend" and shit when he probably never even followed it like 2-3 years back.

why not? I think that's the point a lot of people are trying to make. 2-3 years ago most people here probably weren't into the things they were into. It's ok for people here to be snobby about fashion and all the new shit, but he can't. Lame. Shit, I wasn't even interested in fashion until about 3 years ago, before that I was a fine arts major. And now I'm working on my own mens line.

I think people are just hating on him because of his music antics and how 'arrogant' he is about that. But I never found that same tone when he talks about fashion. But maybe it's just me. I just find kanye bashing kind of tired.
