  1. I'm a size 34 on Nudie RRDS and I almost gave up on the size 33 dry Sugarcane Edo Ai jeans I ordered when I saw them. The ass was huge but the waist looks like they could fit me immediately (w/o the initial soak). After soaking them, I was amazed how you pull the waist to give you another inch (probably more). I'm now wearing them on the waist just right while the rest of the jeans shrank (to my liking). Although this may not be the same to all Sugarcanes.

  2. I've changed my mind towards the Edo Ai's. They are fabuluous! Sizing down was a good idea. After soaking, the jeans shrunk considerably. The ass have become less baggy and looks a bit straight. Whilst, damp you could really alter the fit with a little pulling. It does have a sweet, faint smell.

  3. I've decided to keep the Edo Ai's and gave them a cold soak. After 5 hours, the jeans have significantly shrunk! I think that I could do some pulling in the waist or wear them while damp tomorrow.

    It looks promising.

Mmm.. that's a pity. So they're too tight and too baggy at the same time? Can you elaborate a bit on the fit? Are they too tight in the waist and too baggy in the arse? Or is it the legs which are too loose for your liking..?

yes. it's tight in the waist and baggy in the arse.
  5. Looks like I'm going to sell the Edo Ai's.

The attention to detail on these jeans are fabulous. The fabric is slubby and has a very distinct color. The denim is extremely rigid.

But I made a mistake in getting a size down and it doesn't look like it's going to fit me.

The bagginess is not to my liking as well and the high rise.

  6. I just received the 40500's but I'm in the office and I haven't tried them on yet. I got the 33 even though I'm a 34 to get a less baggier fit. But upon my initial inspection, it does look like it'll be a true (if not a tighter) 33. It looks like it'll fit perfectly if I don't soak them.

Based on what I've learned from this thread, it could stretch another inch on the waist over time. But it might be inconvenient to wear them while I'm trying to speed up the stretching.

    I'll keep you posted.

edge- i bought unwashed. i wanted to buy washed to check out the fit but they didn't have it in my size, so i just decided to take the risk and shrink them myself.

tried them on raw, they were huge. can't see anyone wearing them that way unless they sized down so much that they would no way fit after a wash.

soaked them in the washing machine overnight (12 hrs) in cold, inside out, hang dry, maybe lost an inch in the waist, and the legs went to a measured 34". tried wearing them a day like that, but they still felt way too big in the body, with a really poor fit in the rear.

figured i'd never wear them that way so i gave them a regular wash (again inside out) in what i guess would be warm water (hot on my machine, but felt warm to the touch). i stopped the cycle mid way and let them soak for a couple of hours until the water cooled down, so i would call it a hard wash. dried them hanging over a radiator. it was painful to watch the blue water drain out, but they seem to be just as deep a blue after as before (though i obviously can't do a side-by-side).

lost maybe another 1/2" in the waist and in the legs. so unstretched the inseam (by a tape measure) is 33-1/2, and i am sure will stretch out a 1/2" with normal wear by the end of the day. if you pulled on the legs while wet i bet you could easily get the inseam to 34-1/2. for me, 33-1/2 puts the hem on the ground with no shoes, and somewhat bunched up with vans on. i'd turn it up a bit to wear it.

the body and the rear shrank a lot on the hard wash. it definitely is not tight, but the fit is much improved, which is sort of surprising (but good) given how little additional shrinkage happened in the waist and inseam.

i got the 34" waist, going with the "buy canes to true waist size" school of thought (normally get a 33 or 32 in jeans), and because the history preservation people seemed so nervous about sizing down. but if i was going to do it again i really would size down to a 33, i'd say there's about zero risk of their being too tight after a bit of wear, and the ones i got are probably going to feel pretty loose after a week. also, if buying unwashed, sizing down would probably improve the fit after a cold soak (letting one avoid an immediate hard wash).

hope this is of some use.

thanks, wooster. quite useful. i hope you're right because I got a 33" instead of my usual 34". It's going to arrive within the week.

john11f, what kind of pics are you looking for? Let me know and I'll take some pics. From the two pairs I really like the Edos. The indigo has a nice greenish tint and the warp threads' color is not uniform. It's pretty interesting to look at. The Hawaiis are similar, but the thing that strikes me most is the color of the Edos.

Any pic on the progress of your jeans will do, thanks.

john11f, you should be fine buying a size 33. The waist will stretch out a bit after you wear them. I got 34s for both, and after shrinking the waist on both were identical. They are a bit loose on me now. I wish I had bought 33s.

As for shrinking them, I cold soaked them in my bathtub for 4 hrs. There was little or no indigo loss when I soaked them. The guy at hinoya told me the length will shrink approximately 6-8 cm after soaking and he was correct.

Other than that, they're a great pair of jeans and they smell great. It takes a few days to get use to the itchy fibers. I have a habit of picking out the fibers when I'm bored.

I hope I answered your question. Good Luck!

Whew! Thanks very much rem1x47 that's a relief! I can't wait for them. How do you find the natural indigo color/hue? Any chance of poisting pics? Which of the two pairs you bought strike you the most? Thanks again!

actually i just bought the SC40501A at hinoya a few days ago (i'm in tokyo now). i wear a 32 for n3bp and i have to go for a 33 for those canes.

i agree with geowu about the denim used. seems to be the same case as the 2 different hawaii denims that sugarcanes produce. i was told by the lady at hinoya that the cheaper one (priced at 17640 yen) is 20% natural indigo and the more expensive one (priced at 31290 yen i think) is 100% natural indigo.

i didnt try the SC40500N on, so i wouldnt know how the sizing goes. but judging from the measurements provided on the website get 32 to be safe even though you might be able to get away with 31 actually. but you definitely shouldnt go for 30 unless you dont plan to wash them at all or you'd like to dry clean them only.

hahnstch, i just bought but haven't received a 40500. I normally wear a size 34 but based on the sizing chart in rakuten, it seems like the 33 of the 40500N is the size 34 for the 40400N. Will you be able to confirm if this is really their true sizing for both pairs? A size 33 is on its way...
