  1. it was a lot of more built around art and design. not really much in the way of men's clothing stores aside from what was on broadway. a bunch of teenagers and tourists beginning to trickle in from chinatown.

rocks in your head and kim's underground were the major hubs for music. the stussy shop on prince was pretty popular...so was john fleuvog next door. there were still the designer shops on greene and mercer, etc...such as apc, helmut lang but they weren't catering to younger kids at all.

what i remember really changing the area was the opening of j. crew on prince...very white bread store in the heart of everything made people comfortable shopping there. mercer hotel also opened things up a bit.

now, as some bar owner recently said, "soho is now just an east coast version of LA."

  2. i have 2 pairs of g-star corduroys that i love...one in beige, one in grey...they have front cargo pockets, sit low on the hips, low rise and a great cut...seriously...i love these pants...great for fall.

  3. wow...too right...you guys have to step it up a notch on the music.

though, jon brion and comets on fire are cool with me...

    lately:

leroy burgess - anthology (disco house producer from the 80s)

charlie feathers - get with it anthology (rockabilly and country)

    alan braxe - the uppercuts

    clientele - strange geometry

devendra banhart - cripple crow (real good and i hate this dude)

jah division - dub will tear us apart

and lots of new bomb turks, flamin groovies, numero group reissues, old blues and americana.

  4. only thing is that they dont have a label...they're slim...im guessing they're similar to new standards but the only tag is the APC and then it has a tag that says "long"...nothing else...no l'anglaise, rescue, etc...

are these older apcs before they had different types? is that a good or bad thing? they fit good...i wish the crotch was a bit higher like the new anglaises i have in their dirty denim shade but i was curious to know if you guys knew what these jeans were.

  5. Figured the time has come...

    1. Sonny's Bar in Red Hook - Far away from everything, the only people there are people who know how amazing the place is. Maker's Mark and a PBR chaser, smoking cigarettes outside at 1am in the summer night...just good times.

    2. Difara's Square slices with extra cheese - Sure, the place is mobbed, Dom is slow as fuck, and the prices are ripping you off but damn, best slice ever.

    3. Manhattan Beach/Brighton Beach/Coney Island Esplanade - I'm partial since I grew up here but when the weather gets colder, there's nothing better than a stroll behind the expensive homes in Manhattan Beach and smoking cigarettes overlooking the ocean on this strip. Walking past into Brighton Beach is still pretty awesome.

    4. Taro Sushi for two - $30 for tons of sushi...perfect for 2 people. The silkiest, freshest sushi...try the buttered scallop.

    5. The Gate for beers with friends - preferrably the outside in the summer but inside on a cold night is just as nice.

    6. Pete's Ale House - On Atlantic, my friend calls it a bar for real men...scotch, great food, quiet times...

    7. L&b Spumoni Gardens - On 86th Street in Gravesend, square slices with beer batter apparently. Get 4 slices in yr stomach and yr set.

    8. Walking through Dumbo in early Fall - Cliche, quintessential New York City. Best views of Manhattan, great vibe, great food at Rice and Superfine. Go to an art show and loft party where yr not invited.

    9. Seeing a great country band at Pete's Candy Store - Can get crowded if its someone noteable but the bar is great when its quiet. Great outdoor backyard, good drinks, decent prices.

    10. Bike Riding around Prospect Park - Goes from the white area to the black area and back. If everyone was on bikes, there would be no problems in the world.

  6. friends forever is on 6th i think...between b and c on the eastern side of tompkins square park...decent place...should have some sales when you come in.

steven alan is less street and more awesome frankly...on franklin west of west broadway...

    for food:

cheap and casual: max for cheap, amazing italian...4th and ave b, katz's deli on houston and ludlow for pastrami, cafe habana on elizabeth and prince for cuban (could be crowded), tres azteca for mexican on allen street, tiny's giant sandwich shop for sandwiches on rivington, acme and great jones cafe both on great jones for southern food, RUB on 23rd and 7th ave for the best bbq, petite abeille on west broadway for moules frites, bubby's on hudson for brunch, corner bistro on west 4th and jane for burgers.

expensive but worth it: tomoe on thompson for sashimi deluxe, bouley for fine dining on west broadway...and a ton of others but ill leave it there for now.

bars: most places in the lower east side card...yr best bet is to go before 8pm but you might get called out. otherwise, id recommend little branch on 7th ave.

clubs: luke and leroy isnt half bad for dancing...fridays are lame but decent techno, saturdays is packed with 18 year old gay boys making out...its actually not a bad time...i go with my girlfriend once in awhile. they usually dont id...but dont look like a tool either.

  7. i just got back last week with my girl. spent 3 nights in the latin quarter by rue st catherine. happened to go during jazz fest which was lame but we had fun. ate cheese and drank wine above a crowd of 10k unfunky french canadians to a band billing themselves as the bomb squad...from nyc no less. jeez...try a music history lesson.

stayed at this awesome b&b that we stayed in last feb when we drove up to ski for a few days. angelica blue...great place...huge rooms, nice people. walked around the plateau and mont royal park the next day, saw war of the worlds at one of those massive mega mega plexs on rue st catherine ouest. next day, we rented bikes at the port and rode all over the city...to the top of mont royal park...awesome ride...great biking city...went to a tapas bar on duluth and st denis that night.

no real nightlife (at least compared to nyc)...wish we found some cool stuff but it was nice not having to check out the usual stuff on vacation. sonik records rules though...liked that place a lot.

  8. all saints used to be cool back in the late 90s...i remember buying an awesome pair of jean/pants at the original vice store on cleveland here in nyc.

but i went to london the last couple of years and it looks a little more euro and a lot less nice to my eyes. id skip it personally.

  9. there's an awesome strip club...deriairs...cant spell it. fully nude and they let you bring yr own booze.

i went to myrtle beach with friends from university for 2 july 4ths in a row (2000 and 2001 i think) and we took 3 of the strippers home with us.

the clubs are shit though...obviously. make sure you dont get into any fights down there.

  10. i just figure its quality over quantity. i have 3 pairs of jeans that i wear...2 pairs of apc's for $130 and a pair of rogans i got on sale for $80. id rather have 3 quality pairs of jeans for $200 each than 15 shitty pairs at $40.

just because we post on this board doesnt mean we're buying stuff everyday.

stick to what works for you.

  11. its night and day but those are the main 2 pairs of jeans i have...the apc l'anglaise for casual fridays at work or when i want to feel like an adult (since they dont have rips in them). and i wear the rogan katan's with t-shirts when im hanging out and doing whatever.

    night and day.

  12. basically, i need a new pair of white sneakers to wear with jeans...obviously dunks are tired but ive been wearing white dunks with jeans for the last few years and they look good with jeans...low to the ground and flat, etc...

i was thinking of some canvas sneaker...i went to steven alan the other day and saw these spring courts that they have...

    anyone have any other recommendations?

    thx

  13. ill be honest, their button down shirts fit me like a glove...the new ones over the last 2 years or so. theyre cheap (on ebay) and i dont mind them at all.

i dont like the reputation as being fratty but i only get stuff with the little moose icon thing...never a logo...wouldnt be caught dead in it frankly.

their jeans and pants are a bit too baggy for my tastes and their jackets run too big for me as well but the simple polos and the button downs are fine by me.

i like steven alan shirts a lot and the truth is, the abercrombie shirts are of higher quality, for 1/4 the price and they fit just as well.
