  1. Samurai S710XX (great, conforming fit)

Fullcount 1108XX (nice high rise, trim in thighs)

Roy KS1001 Kinda Special (flattering fit, trim, versatile)

Roy KS1002 Kinda Special (same fit, heavier denim)

Dry Bones/Self Edge/Superfuture collaboration (nice detailing, e.g., pocket bags)

3 Sixteen+ 21BSP (interesting denim, back rise low relative to front)

    Iron Heart 634S

Iron Heart 633S (dark indigo/grey denim)

Iron Heart 1955-UHR (high rise, lots of hip and leg room)

For a guy who's bought many Levi 550's at JC Penney, that's a lot of jeans.  But I (we?) wlll not be deterred in the quest for the perfect fit ;-)

  2. Does anyone know if there are unique details or characteristics of the S710OG other than the 16 oz. organic cotton?  I assume the price will be higher than the standard S710 or S710XX?

    Thanks.

    John

  3. I'm a happy 1108XX owner, looking to try the 0105 or 1101.

Sorry for the dumb questions, but I'm not familiar with what a jeans "contest" is or the particular appeal of a pair of Fullcounts as part of a group buy vs. just ordering a standard pair.  I assume it's not the cut, per se, but unique details (e.g., buttons, offset belt loop, special cotton) that are not typically available.

  4. Isn't the 1101 in between the 1108 and 0105 in terms of room through the leg and thigh, with the 1108 being the trimmest and the 0105 the loosest/most relaxed?  Are there other differences between these three cuts that clearly distinguish them (e.g., front or back rise, leg opening)?

I realize I could spend 10 minutes on the BiG website to answer these questions but would also appreciate input from those with experience with all three models.  I have the 1108XX, by the way, and like it -- but it might be nice to have something that's a bit more relaxed through the thigh so I don't have to order a slightly larger waist then necessary.

Also (and just out of curiosity) which of these three cuts would you say is most or least popular?

    Thanks.

  5. Quick question -- if I'm a size 36 in the 1108XX would you suggest 35 in 1101 and 34 in 0105?  1108X fits well -- nice high rise, comfortable waist, and relatively trim through the hips and on down.

Apologies in advance -- I've already asked you all about the 0105 (and I think 34 was the consensus) but am unsure on the 1101.

    Thanks.

  6. Compliments to Roy on the KS1001 Kinda Special.  I'm wearing a pair of size 34's right now and enjoy how they're different from other jeans.  As much as I like the fit and rough texture of the Samurai S710XX, the toughness of Iron Heart (633/634/1955), the comfort of the Fullcount 1108XX, the Kinda Special really is special.  Given its details, clean and trim fit, and less slubby, smoother denim, this is a pair of jeans that can go anywhere.  While I love my Japanese jeans, they're essentially work wear remain in the closet if I need to wear a sport coat or dress up a bit.  The Roys, on the hand, look good with just about anything and are very versatile.  In addition, there's something very cool about wearing a pair of jeans made by one guy, in Oakland no less, my home town ;-)

So thanks to Roy Slaper, but also to Self Edge for carrying these.  I was in the San Francisco store the other day working with a great guy by the name of Young Lee.  I told Young that many jeans have a front or back rise that's just too low for my body type.  He brought out the Kinda Special and I knew within one minute of trying them on that my credit card would be taking an immediate hit.

  7. Appreciate the input on the 34 vs. 36 1955-UHR's.  I cold soaked the size 34 for 2.5 hours and they came out perfect.  As long as they don't shrink too much more with future washing, these should be just right.  Good to have some higher rise Iron Hearts.

  8. naniwa,

I can't respond to your question directly (lacking the knowledge of others here) but would echo your sense that Samurai denim feels different than other denim that I've had, including Fullcount, 3Sixteen, Iron Heart, and Dry Bones.  I love my S710XX 19 oz. jeans but its denim feel lighter or more loosely woven than other denim of similar weight.  Haven't had them long enough to know how they'll break in over time but they are noticeably different, no doubt.

  9. I think you're right okisan.  Giles mentioned that the 34 will probably work fine, as long I as I treat them gently and don't throw them in the dryer.  They'll shrink with soaking and washing, but then likely stretch back to raw or even slightly more.  I'll sleep on it, try them once more in the morning, and make a decision this weekend.  Appreciate the input.

  10. I ordered two pairs of Iron Heart 1955-UHR 21 oz. jeans in sizes 34 and 36 -- long rise, lots of room in the hips and thighs.  The 34 is snug in the waist but fine everywhere else.  The 36 is a little loose but comfortable in the waist but BIG everywhere else.  I would imagine these will shrink some since they're unsanforized and then there may be some stretch back.  Assuming I keep a pair, which should it be?

    Here's the size 34:

  11. Thanks everyone.  I haven't yet purchased direct from Japan but have purchased a few things from BiG (working with Hiro) and could not be more impressed with the communications and service.  It can get expensive, given retail pricing and the cost of returns, but I couldn't be happier with the result -- a pair of FC 1108XX (36) and Samurai S710XX (35).  If only I had kept The Real McCoy's heavyweight sweatshirt in L rather than XL ;-)

  12. Got it -- much looser through thigh and calf than the 1108 ... and comfortable, I would imagine.

Though I was barely around in 1955 (born that year) these are somehow reminiscent of 501's that I used to buy as a kid.  I know that 501's have changed over the years, but there is a family resemblance ;-)

    Thanks setterman.

  13. Compare BiG's measurements. The 0105 is going to be much bigger in the thigh, and roomier in the seat and crotch.   I'm a size 36 in the 0105, and when they're stretched out I kinda wish I'd gone with a 35 (but I'm pretty sure they'd be too small fresh from the washing machine). My 1108s were a size 40.  I couldn't take them any smaller in the thigh, but the waist was too big, so I sold them.

If you're 100% happy with the 1108, get another pair in the standard 13 3/4 oz denim.

Thanks setterman -- huge size difference between the 0105 and 1108!

You're probably right that I should just order the 1108 in 13.75 oz. -- just wanted to try something different ;-)

  14. S-Town, setterman, garden gnomes, Flash, and others,

I'm curious about the fit of a size 34 or 35 0105 vs. a size 36 1108XX.  I'm really happy with the 36x36 1108XX.  For reference, I'm 6'0", 175 lbs, pretty athletic with relatively large thighs and butt, and a 35.5" waist.  The 1108XX works because it has a high rise, room up top (since it's a 36), and then tapers gradually down below.  How would a size 34 or 35 0105 fit in comparison?  I know it's 1955-based and 'anti-fit' (whatever that means!) with a straight leg, but how might the two compare?

    Thanks.

    John
