How come choices were made by others? Was it just that the stuff you wanted was not backed up by anyone?

    essentially

Off the bat it seemed like everyone else wanted a 710xx cut and the heaviest denim they could use.  From there it progressed and just developed into a pair of "what can we do and what does samurai have that we can use," which brought on the tab choices, using all the different buttons on the fly, etc.

There was no real voting process but I'd say that all the other contestants are getting a pair they are excited about, and the excitement for the pair is high on reddit as well. We may all just be a little out of touch and no longer the target market

I got to 'collaborate' on this pair, ie. sit on the sideline while choices were pretty much made by others. They are going to be pretty ugly jeans imo

i wanted a lighter denim, in a wider cut, with more toned down features.

I'll be getting a free pair but i'm 90% sure my thighs will never fit into these unless i drop about 10kg of muscle...

  3. If anyone wants a pair of size 35 r1901 ryders for cheap let me know.

Purchase them from a shop closing up in Sydney and the thighs just were too small on me and no returns. They’ve had 2-3 wears max

    Overview

These are a pair of boots that I’ve been lusting over and dreaming about for a few years now but the price of them new on ebay has always seen to keep me at bay. I had been debating jumping on a preorder for a pair of Attractions engineer boots but sizing concerns always kept me from doing so (the largest size they have been making recently is 11, which in theory should work for me as they appear to fit a whole size larger than other boots). I even grabbed a pair of black RRL enigneer boots that were the model made after the Julians in size 11, which never ended up fitting right (album here -> http://imgur.com/a/qESXp).

Once these popped up on ebay i knew i had to have these as they were new, old stock, with maybe a few flaws i could see but other than some small issue were near perfect

    Specs

    • Maker: Julian Imrie for RRL
    • Model: Brown Engineer Boot
    • Last: unknown (help?)
    • Size: 13
    • Leather: Brown, Thick, Awesome. Can’t find any details easily online
    • Sole: Vibram half sole
    • Heel: Vibram
    • Configuration: Pull-on engineer boot

    Sizing

I’m normally a 12 in Vibergs, Redwings, Alden Barrie but can fit an 11.5 viberg 2030, these RRL Julian Boots are a size 13. From my research it seemed as though these have always been a very difficult boot to size as the shape of the shaft is fairly tapered which leads to a boot that is very difficult to get on and off initially. That statement rings true, the left boot did not initially cooperate very well with my left foot. After the first two days of wear it took me about 5 minutes of maximum strength effort to get the boot off and a shower after was necessary…

After 4 days of wear they are sliding on and off a bit easier and the overall comfort of these boots on my feet is at about an 8/10. I can only see this improving but what i will need to eventually do it have some additional holes added to the ankle straps as i can tell already that they will need to be tightened up some

    Leather & Clicking

Time will tell how my clicking and leather selection turns out, so far it seems pretty great and after an initial saphir reno treatment these really came to life compared to the sellers original photos -> http://imgur.com/a/oyXDz

    Finishing

Both toes of the boots have some puckering, which might have made these seconds but whatever. Everything else about these boots is flawless. If something does happen to these due to the puckering I’ll probably cry myself to sleep for about a week but i will cross that bridge if that does happen.

The soles and edges are clean, the stitching everywhere else is excellent and for the age of these boots a quick brushing and once over with some saphir was all they needed to look factory fresh again

If anyone has any recommendations for a remedy for the puckering ie relasting by brian or something along those lines i would like to hear it!

    Final Thoughts

I am over the moon with these boots, it took almost three weeks to get them from the USA due to ebay’s slow as hell global shipping program but once they landed with me here in Sydney the waiting and concern over sizing vanished immediately

I’m glad my persistence and waiting for a pair in my size on ebay to come up for a good price paid off as these ended up costing me $215 AUD plus $100 AUD shipping ($165 USD and $80 USD) which negates any concerns i really have over the puckering anyways

They look great with my jeans and have already become the new love in my life. These have reminded rekindled my passion for clothes and boots, i was in a bit of a drought and hadn’t been posting or buying anything for about a year.

COP OF THE DECADE FOR ME

I'm curious if Thailand has passed peak Raw Denim. Sometimes I'll check on SelvedgeForum, and it seems way less active than a few years ago. I sense that raw denim is kind of a trend that had a very hot moment, but has cooled down a bit since then. I could be wrong though.

I've noticed that Thailand has a pretty big group of track bike/fixie riders as well. SEA seems to have pockets of absolutely manic people spending huge $$$ on items. Some of the bikes they post just whipping around on the streets (*not on a velodrome) are around $8k-$12...I am scared riding my expensive road bike around in sydney, let alone my track bike without any brakes in the city

For reasons I can't articulate, I really don't feel the draw to post anymore (or even buy new things), but I'm still a huge denim fan...

I'm sad the crotch on these rjb is starting to go though :'( I don't want to send these away for months to indigo proof!

I'm in the same boat, I am pretty happy with most things i have now. I will need some new jeans soon so i will probably get active with posting a bit more when I'm searching for the next pair. i do have $47 worth of points at denimio....

Those RJBs are killer, still super jelly that you managed to snag those from SE

I did get a great pair of RRL Julian engineer boots, new, in my size that i should probably toss up a mini review about.

  7. Decided to sell my RRL engineer boots i picked up off ebay and managed to grab a pair of RRL Julian made engineer boots in brown size 13 for a great deal (NOS). More pics incoming when these eventually arrive at my door step from the USA

There's a bit of puckering on both of the toes of the boots, i don't really see it becoming a major issue so whatever

If anyone wants a pair of black rrl engineer boots in size 11 let me know, will cut you a great deal, they are not made by Julian but are not the 'murdock' engineer boots, VEB has a decent write up comparing the Julian boots to this black pair

howdy. looking for a little advice, please.

i just picked up a pair of s710's in size 35. previous owner did one initial hot soak and then one cold wash/hang dry a bit later. don't think he wore them much as there is virtually no signs of wear, and tons of indigo left, and i know these fade relatively quickly.

as many have already pointed out, they're a little baggier than i'd like from the knee down. my question is this: if i get them tapered from the knee down. how small can i go on the leg opening without ruining the silhouette of the jean and still get the semi-slim look i'm after? (i was thinking a 7" opening) i've seen some horribly dramatic tapers from the knee down that i'd love to avoid.

then there's the age-old question of whether to hem or leave the length as is. i'm not much of a stacker...

    thanks in advance!

That's gonna be too small. I had my 710 geishas tapered to a 7.25" opening and i've ruined them. I am a pretty big guy tho and they hub my legs way too much now

I'd cuff them with the original hem, my 710 19oz pair is perfect with a bit of a hem only and a large cuff that floats off my feet

sydney. the longest drive i've personally done. 1400kms or so. i only got into sydney about 2130 having left adelaide at 7am. the drive was amazing though. with great twisty bits and an entirely straight and empty piece of tarmac for about 170kms. Sydney's not too shabby, very hectic and busy with high rise buildings everywhere. sadly, over the past few times i've ever been in sydney, it's been such a coincidence that i'm never there longer than 2 days. at least this time i've managed to drive over the sydney harbour bridge. i've stopped by canberra on the way back to perth from melbourne airport as well.

WE SHOULD HAVE MET UP!!!!! DAMMIT!

  10. Anyone have any experience stretching the shafts of engineer boots? I am still struggling to get my RRLs on and off (struggling as in, needing to surgically remove them)

Once they are on my feet they are fantastic tho :/

Just looking for some advice to give my cobbler & what exactly to ask for

  11. So i made a mistake, these are the 2nd version of the RRL engineer boots, not the julian ones. Based on the pics i thought they were the Julians, no bother tho as these are pretty damn sweet. Here's vintage engineer boots comparison of the new pair vs the julians. Thankfully i was confident these weren't the latest "murdock" version

Here's the pics that i was working with from the ebay seller. He also only had these labelled as RRL boots which probably reduced the number of views on his item page

This is after a lexol cleaning and conditioning last night followed by some brushing. I will ran out of saphir reno the other week so once i get some more these will look even better.

The shaft is insanely tight on these, so much so that i need a plastic bag on my foot to get them on and off. I will get some womens tights and wear those for the time being until the shaft opens up a bit for my massive foot. Once they are on tho they are extremely comfortable and the leather seems to be in great shape other than a bit of creasing.

I may need a new cats paw heel soon but i doubt these will see much wear until the next aussie winter

  12. Haven't been getting the shoe marts seconds list for alden anybody has this issue?

Mine has been going into my spam folder in my Gmail recently. No idea why but I hadn't got one for a while and all of them from the past couple of months had been sitting in there

  13. Very nice combo. My Samurai Denimo are holding tight to their indigo. Lots of wears, some bicycling.

I think it's the combo of the heat here in sydney + cycling. Summer is just starting and i am beginning to die

  14. Well i can safely say that the 710xx denim is probably the fastest fading denim I've ever had.

Crotch is about to go on it, my naked carbon seat has IMO saved the crotch from a blowout thus far but i think it's going to go fairly soon. These are in the Denimio Contest and i have a feeling i will be reaching 5000+ KM biked come the end of the year. All the sweat has really melted the indigo off the combs while the whiskers are pretty normal for 4 months of wear, i think.

  15. Personally it was a bit too much of a hassle to post here and on the DWC, I'd much rather post here as there is some form of community and spirit vs the blandness that somewhat developed on the DWC site.

I've pretty much had to retire my pair of Flat Heads at this point due to them just not fitting right any more, the hidden amount of shrink in the pioneer denim after the numerous washes pretty much made them unwearable. They look pretty ridiculous with their wide leg openings and skin tight top block
