  1. This looks a lot like Viberg's "brown wax flesh," which they describe basically as roughout that has been heavily waxed...

The 'rough-out' is not in fact all that rough. I've seen hairier, so to speak.

...BrownMetallic has a pair in the black reverse kip, posted in the HWB comp. Sure he can speak further on the leather.

  2. .

'got the TOW in reversed kip__  w/c is surely the hardiest, heaviest leather i've ever encountered.  mosdef the most difficult pair i've ever tried to break in.

Can you guys comment on the fit of the Dundas boot compared with others you've worn?

Also, when you say William Lennon Dundas, are those bought directly through WL, as opposed to the Dundas boot website...?

    Thanks!

  3. I have a very similar pair of pre-Katahdin Chippewas, before they started making them for LL Bean, and I wore them about 4 or 5 days a week for 10 years before the leather started to split. Nice boots.

some shots of my katahdins. had them for about 3 years, still going strong.

  4. Not sure why I have so much trouble posting pics to this board... I had intended to post some comparison pics for White's and Viberg that I have, but when I do my link (from Snapfish) it shows as an "X".  It would be so much easier if we could upload pics directly, as other sites do. But there is no way to do that, right...?

or what size do you need? you might find them also from other shops on Rakuten

Thanks, I did find that listing after posting here, but they do not have my size (10 US).  Also, I was hoping not to have to order a pair all the way from Japan. (I am in the US.)

I have never actually seen Toys McCoy boots in person.  Can anyone testify to the quality?  Or sizing?  Or how the leather wears over a few years?  They certainly look really cool, and I think the shape of the boot (narrow heel, wide in the toe area) would work for me.

  6. I think I'd use saddle soap on them, and then do a Mink Oil treatment.  They say that over years Mink Oil will degrade the leather, but an occasional treatment seems okay, and I think it will work well on that leather.

Also, I think they look great as casual boots.  I wore them a lot like that.  They are good looking boots...

I meant dress rather than work.

That being said, I did polish them and don't like them quite as much, so I wont do that again. Oh well live and learn :P

  7. I wore a pair of Chippewas like these (but pre-LL Bean) for over 10 years.  They were great boots in every way, and held up longer than many more expensive brands. Plus, I think they look classic.

I can tell you that the longer you wear them the better they will look.  I remember that it actually took probably over a yearfor the leather to begin to really wear in, and it got darker and smoother as it went on.  In those days I did not know much about boot care, and just applied Mink Oil once a year or so (as my father used to do).  It worked well for many years, though I understand now that it might have been responsible for the eventual beginning of a split in the leather - though again, 10 years is not bad!

Not sure what you mean by making them more like work boots than dress boots. They look exaclty like work boots to me.  But you may want to try rawhide leather laces.

Took my first venture into decent boots last week and got myself some LL Bean Kathadin Iron Works Boots. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately, depending how you look at it) I had to wear them in ankle deep mud and rain from Thursday-Sunday for 20 hours a day, so they look quite a bit older than one week right now (they did break in fantastically though!). I gave them a quick clean and a once-over with some cheap leather oil because it's all I had at the time and they were really dried out, but I'd like to do something to them to give it it more casual look, as opposed to a work boot look. Is it too late to do that, and if not, what should I try?

    Thanks.

  8. I thought these were in the 2045 last, which is not so narrow in the toebox as the 2030...?

If 2045, can you report how the fit is compared with other boots you've worn?

BTW, they look very cool indeed...

  9. Was just going to post a picture of some Black horsehide Vibergs, but can't figure out how to! I know, I am a computer loser -- what can I say. I click on the 'Image' icon, but it calls for a URL, when my pic is just a jpeg file on my computer. And alas, the help menu doesn't make it clear to me.

Any advice? Should be easy, and I am sure I am overlooking something obvious... but there it is.

  10. New SDs with specs: 461 last, lowered heel, CXL #8, medallion cap etc etc.

For reference put beside my SDs, SD last, cuban heel, vibram halfsole. burgundy calf.

The single leather sole with vibram halfsole is as thick as double with mini commando.

The 461, mini commando with lowered heel setup doesnt make the shoe tilt back as much as I thought compared to the other more standard setup.

The cxl is so much richer in tone...

LOVE this boot! It's interesting that the toe on the new 461 does not look any more "sprung" in this instance than the SD last -- maybe even less so in one of the pics... Anyway, these really are beautiful boots. I like the heel, and the sole. I had thought I had decided on SJ over SD, but now I am not sure.... Nice.

  11. Recently got my latest SDs from bakers.

Now, they are almost made according to spec.

Everything fine and dandy except for the mid sole. Its double instead of single.

What to do? I cant decide. Its not that I hate the looks of them. (and double is more expensive and will probably last longer)
