    Hi everyone,

An update on my flamepanda aka Peng’s short shift engineers. They were unsealed and untreated natural horsehide, and they attracted dirt like magnets. They were glorious to look at when they were new, but I would not consider the dirt and wear they picked up as ‘patina’. Did not really like how they aged.
So I got caught in a huge thunderstorm recently wearing these boots. Being the leather they were, they soaked up the water like a sponge. After air drying for a few days, they still were darker than the original colour. So I decided why not, and just decided to clean and condition them, accepting that they probably would not get back to their original colour. After some conditioner and wax, these are what they look like now. I kind of like how they look, and you can see the marks and nicks that was inflicted on the boots.

They look great!  I think this is exactly what supposed to happen with natural leather.

Yeah, I've always really liked the idea of toe taps on leather soles, particularly for dress shoes, but adding leather to the part of the sole that takes the biggest beating just to add a tap over it seems pretty fishy

With my RDTs I was surprised to find that the metal toe taps wore out faster than the sole. And they were very slippery.  As Posted here before, I had them re-soled early on with wedge soles, which have held up very well (better than the RDT uppers!).

I love my RDTs, but I have to admit some disappointment in how the stitching on the vamps began to come loose pretty quickly.  They have held together, and I don't wear them all that often, but still an unexpected breakdown.

@tod that's disappointing, I'd be interested to see some photos.

The red thread represents my attempt to do some DIY reinforcement, which I failed at..

Here's a few photos. Nick's Comstock in black seidel, Nick's Robert's in Horween Dublin Tan, Nick's Hawk Americanas in brown horse hide, Carmina custom oxfords in natural cordovan, Carmina custom derby's in green cordovan, and finally a pair of Church's Grafton brogues redone with Dr. Sole welt and olive cork soles.

@SLAB, you are going to love these boots. The fit and comfort are amazing.  It is the regular CXL black horsehide. It is pretty tough. I still don’t have any scratches or abrasions on the leather. I use a heavy wax to condition my boots because I live in a place with single digit humidity unless it’s raining. Which is not often.

Do you know if this leather ("regular CXL black horsehide") is different from his "hand tinted HH," which I see so many pics of?  I like yours better than a lot of the pics I see of RC boots with wear, where the HH gets all creased up.  I know some folks like the latter, and I understand why, but this looks better to me.

I believe they are around 1350$; add 150$ if you want the super horsehide. Expect to wait two years before delivery though. In any case his boots are worth the wait and the $$$.
I'll be placing my deposit this summer.

Questing regarding White's boots dress leather. Does anyone know if the black dress is dyed through? I would like to make a bounty hunter in black dress but hope to achieve the same patina as with the brown dress.

    Yes, died through.

Yeah, I run Chippewa almost exclusively. I was recently told by Schott folks that the entire Original Chippewa (MIA premium collection) was scrapped. It's a shame. I guess it's Red Wing Heritage for me from here. No offense to the $700+ crowd, but it isn't for me. These White's are also on my list though:

Yes, I've been tempted by these 4Q collabs as well.  But ultimately I'm a toecap guy.

  8. Chippewas after 3 years or so of regular wear. It’s a shame they discontinued these. They were affordable, looked good (to my eyes), and were hardwearing.  Not fancy, but got the job done.  I wore my last pair for over ten years, and had to get these replacements on the ebay. Still a few floating around, but starting to dry up.

I've had several pairs of white's (mainly Semi-Dress) and the quality is very good. I have never had a complaint about the workmanship personally. Quality-wise they are close to Wesco, having owned both (although wesco may have the edge).

Those smokejumpers on eastwest are nice looking. I would jump on those if they were black (although brown dress leather is also very tempting). Does anyone know how the smokejumper last compared to SD last? I'm probably an E is SD last.

I found the SJs to be much more narrow in the toe box than the SD last.  It's a little surprising as they look chunkier, but to me they were like two widths narrower...  Just in the toe box.

  10. Thinking about ordering a pair of Truman boots for the first time. They've got an MTO with some nice looking horsehide going.  I've seen both good and bad about them on the interweb; wondering if anyone here in the trusted group has had experience with them.  And especially if anyone has owned or handled their horsehide from Maryam tannery in Italy.

@dudewuttheheckHalf soles get scrapped up when riding motorcycles, etc.  That was the contemplation when I built my Wescos but ended up going for something I can walk in with a flex in the sole.  Ever since I saw Yusuke from Canvas wearing them, I've been hooked though.

@tod - haven’t got ‘round to posting them (or the Pecos, RMC N1 and RDT Conquers)  up in classifieds but they’re ready to go any time on the asking. These are a size 8.5

Dang, too small for me. I remember when they first offered these, right at the launch of the new website. Wish I had got them then.  GLWS.
