  1. Slab, nee, ik spreek een beetje Nederlands...

My parents moved to Holland in the early 80's, lived there for about four years in Uithoorn. I went to the local kleuterskool before then moving on to the International School of Amsterdam. My formative years were spent in total immersion with the local Dutch kids - including my best mate of the time from the Jordaan district - until exposure to the multi-national school later on.

Sadly, now I can only really recall a few expressions and of course the ubiquitous "godverdomme!" which was one of my earliest words. At the time the International school my colourful colloquial language was to the shock and distaste of the other International mothers. Little English kid swearing his head off in a thick Jordaan accent.

Happy, happy memories. In many ways I wish I had never left Holland and returned to England. I have a warm place in my heart for the Nederlands.

Slightly off-topic but I did it the other way round :)

My Dutch parents moved to the UK in the 80s where I was born. We moved away after a few years though (to germany  ). I returned to the UK later though to go to school in Yorkshire. Britain will always have a warm place in my heart.

  2. Heel slipping doesn't have to be a size problem; especially with a sturdy GY welted shoe. New shoes' soles are still very stiff and wont bend much when you walk. When your foot bends and your heel leaves the ground shifting your weight to your forefoot the sole of a new (gy welted) shoe will try and stay as straight as possible causing your foot's heel to disconnect from the inside of the shoe's heel. As the soles become more supple this problem will decrease and should eventually disappear.

Is the width OK at the forefoot and above the arch?

When you stand straight, divide your weight equally between both feet bend over and 'pinch' over your forefoot the shoes' leather should fit snugly around your foot.

    Your boots look awesome btw!

  3. I'm sorry to hear that, bestie. Nice to hear that white' s is helpful though.

Are you looking for a work/outdoor boot? I dunno what Crocketts cost in the states buy you could have a look the Coniston model which I quite like. Cheaper than the Islay and probably easier to find (post skyfall).

Though I have no experience with them you could also have a look at the Indonesian Sagara boots which were posted here a while ago. They seemed nice for their price.

In case any sagara owners read this; please post updates! : )

  4. ^ true, which is why I probably won't be entering even thought I like the thought of a contest. I usually dont wear the same pair of shoes/boots more than twice a week.

A contest limited to a certain type of leather would be fairer but a 'free for all' might give some more interesting results.

  5. Nice idea.

    imo

    - 2 years is too short. Someone on this thread said my 3yo Edward Greens looked 2 weeks old. For referance; the pair below is 12yo. In my experience the better the shoe the longer it takes for them to age. I wouldn't deliberately abuse my shoes for the contest's sake.

    - a specific boot seems like a nice idea but in practise it might be difficult; every participant would have to buy that boot at approx. the same time.

    - All leather ages differently but i see no reason to exclude a specific type.

  6. Almost looks a bit like seal or elephant. Not saying it is, but it might be.

Nice shine on the other pair btw : )

Those Thorogoods do indeed look tidy btw.

Had a word with my local retailer today; he's going to check if my Edward Green mto boot request is possible without heading into top drawer territory. I'll keep you posted.
