  1. smittybat- those look awesome! Very nice. Yeah, I think the Swing last has a lower arch then the standard last, that is probably the difference you are feeling I would guess.

I got my ship confirmation the other day so my British tan SD should be here on Monday....here is hoping they fit. This will be my first pair of standard last in size 11D with the celastic toe....I'm a little concerned they will be too small but my 11.5D have always felt just a touch too big. Unfortunately with White's all you can do is take the gamble and place an order so I did. Hope I don't have to turn around and sell them for a loss but at least now I'll know for sure if I'm a better fit in the 11 or 11.5.

  2. I have a pair of British tan semi-dress on order with the 269 sole, leather lining, and all eyelets. I decided I needed a basic pair of semi-dress on a rubber sole so I could wear them in all weather conditions without worry. Also have seen some pics of this color and really liked it but have never seen it in person so figured it was a good time to give it a try.

That's it for now though. I also sold 2 pair of Alden's over the weekend but I'm not looking to replace those, just trim down the collection. I decided 9 pair of good boots was just too many, some were not getting the wear they deserved. I'm going to try and stick to 5-6 pair probably....though once my new White's come in I'll be sitting at 7 still I think....

  3. White's Semi-Dress with the following specs:

    11 D Swing Last

    Chromexcel Leather (brown)

    single leather sole

    block heel

    antique eyes & hooks

    single celastic toe box

    close sole trim

Basically some beautiful and classic looking boots. These have been worn lightly, but there was a little rock that jumped up once and nicked the toe (which I have shown in the close up). Light wear on the soles and overall just beautiful boots. I already have another pair of White's with leather soles and I just don't need two pair of leather soled boots I've decided. The laces shown are some White's leather laces...it was actually one pair of Smokejumper laces that I cut in half for these...hence they are a little short. Boots will also come with the original cotton laces as well which I do still have and are still in very good shape.

$275 for these guys + $10 for shipping...unless your near Madison, WI then you can come pick them up if you want (seems silly but my last pair of White's sold on Ebay to some guy in Madison so you never know.)

  4. how old are those? I love how #8 changes to a great brown color over time.

On a separate note, I know some people have roughout White's that they haven't treated with anything. How do they handle rain and such? I've put my dubber SJ away now that the snow is gone an have gotten my Farmer/Ranchers out again but haven't worn them until today because of the rain. Just not sure what rain does to roughout.

  5. I just made the plunge...

    SD in dress brown.

    Natural Edge

    All antique eyelets

    Half Sole

    Single leather

    now the wait...

Nice! I just dropped an order through Baker's yesterday myself.

    Semi Dress in British Tan

    Brown Edge

    Single midsole

    Vibram 269 sole

    stand trim and heel

    cream lining

    all antique eyelets

I'm trying a size 11. My cap toe SD are 11.5, the rest are 11's but this will be my first pair of 11s in the standard last with the reinforced celastic toe...I hope I don't wait 6-8 weeks only to find out they are too small. Also...longer wait time then I've ever had from White's, most of min have been 3-4 weeks.

  6. I think the comfort comes down to which fits your foot better really. I find the Swing last doesn't cause crowding of my toes as much as the standard, but the standard looks better to my eye and is still pretty comfy. My Swing last is size 11 though, my standard 11.5 for the reinforced toe version (I have some 11 standard last boots but they are both non-reinforced toes which provide some fitting leeway as the toe box is soft). I often wonder if I could comfortably fit in a size 11 standard last, but I have my doubts because my right foot big toes touches the end of the boot on my non-reinforced pairs. Length is more then ample on the Swing last though.

So yeah, that probably didn't really help you at all.

  7. Never had double so not sure about that. Single feels like what you'd expect in work boots; very firm but certainly having anlittle flex.

As far as celastici or nothing...I prefer the reinforced toe though I will say the soft toe is super comfy. I got both the FR and SJ from Whites eBay store for about $150 each...awesome boots at that price but if I were ordering them at full price myself I'd probably go with the single celastic toe reinforcement. I'm happy to have both though really and the SJs have served me well all winter.

  8. whitesj.jpg

Doesn't really show much though, not something you can see from the outside really.

    From L-R:

SD with leather lining and celastic toe reinforcement

SD w/o lining and with celastic toe reinforcement (toe box area is lined)

FR w/o lining and no toe reinforcement (no lining in toe box)

    SJ same as above FR

Can't really tell any of that from the pic though and I don't have any way of getting pics of the inside toe box area to show the lining on the unlined boot....but it's there.

  9. What would you want to be half-lined? The unlined boots still have leather lining up in the toe box area, at least if you get a celastic toe cap it does as the toe reinforcements fits in-between the lining and the outer leather. I have a pair of cxl SD that are unlined like this.

Now my roughout boots w/o toe reinforcement have no sort of lining anywhere.

I also have a pair of SD that are lined. I like the lining and don't find it any warmer then my unlined pair really. It gives the boots a more finished feel and for a nicer or dressier boot it is definitely my preference. For a more utilitarian or workboot like feel unlined might be the way to go.

  10. Any opinions on Whites SD's Vs Redwing GT's in terms of quality etc..?

I have some black GT's and love them, so would I be wasting my time and money getting some Whites?

Buy the White's...trust me. I've had both, I no longer have or even want Red Wings anymore...the White's are just that much better IMO. GT's are a fine boot for $200 if you can find them for that, but White's are definitely worth the extra and they are especially cool because you can order them exactly the way you want them built.

  12. Yes, Russell doesn't do perfect stitching or exactly finished edges on their leather...they are a little more "folksy" then that. While they lack the extra polish, the overall quality is very high and I love the way they make their product...it's as old school as it gets. I'd have more but the moccasin construction doesn't lend itself a supportive shoe really, I tend more towards the White's style with their "arch ease" system but if I could get along as well with a flat footbed Russell would be my choice.

  13. love the black w/ natural sole edge, looks awesome. Also a big fan of all eyelets as well. Not as much a fan of the block heel myself, though I do have a pair set up that way, but it's a nice option if you already have the standard tapered heel.

Really liking the leather laces as well. My SD boots never came with leather laces but I have a pair from my Smokejumpers that I'm not using and have been thinking about putting on one of my pairs of SD...this pic has convinced me it's a good idea.

  14. Why thanks stuntastic. all kitchen appliances must match outfit..always

I did 'size down' in the Filson. I'm a 40 normally and this is a 38. Wanted it to fit more like a shirt than a jacket. I love this thing, mad warm. plus I have the matching hat to complete the fidel castro look when I'm feeling militant.

well nice work. My Cruiser is a 40 and after seeing these pics I sort of wish I had gone 38...though I have a Mackinaw vest as well and not sure it would fit under the 38 very good.....so maybe I just need two :)

Awesome Russells too by the way!
