Yup. Those are the mythical 701. THey're very interesting. The first Japan reissue Levis (pre-LVC) were 502, I think the 701 came soon after, was issued in a box and they were also exported overseas (maybe just Europe, I saw them in London at the time). I have NO Idea why they were badged as 701. Later they badged them as 702, which would have been a kids' size. They are a kind of fantasy, what might have been repro as no original Levi's had the cinch in that location. They also inspired a lot of early fakes! , I did have lengthy email exchanges with a Levi's Japan founder but he coudnlt' tell me what the inspiration was for this model and why they named it 701. My guess is it's like LVC naming the 1937 501 as the '201, they wanted to have different lot numbers to differentiate.
If other folk don't know, these predate LVC. There were a few US-made Capital E repros from 1990 on, and the Levi's Japan, from 1987 on (around the time Evis started up), were entirely separate using only (in the early days) Japanese fabric.
Very interesting snippet of history, from the very beginning of the repro era, nice catch!
Can i use the pix on my loomstate blog please? Then I can refer to this info later.if you are referring to my pics, no problem man. Good to know info like that!

The 201s are a 2007 repro I think. Does anyone know what kind of denim is used on the 201 and 701xx?

Just tried to research more on the 1878s. Seems that the unraveling is a common thing.

Don’t think that it has been tapered because the selvage looks uniform throughout the whole leg.

They have already started unraveling at the fly... just with a cold soak. Any way to stop the selvage from unraveling further?

denim weight? their usual pre-40s 9-10oz lightweight?
interested to see chainstitched hem: have they been shortened?
Not too sure about the denim weight. I bought them off eBay. So they came without a lot of the retail tags. So I’m also interested if anyone has more info on these. They are not shortened. Original tagged length still.

He recommended a natural horsehide from Conceria Cloe tannery. So I went for that. Can’t wait!

I took a 10 in these and as I said I'm a 10.5 on a Brannock. They fit slightly roomy, but not loose. I'm a 9.5/10 in Viberg 2030. The 9.5 is slightly snug and the 10 is a little too roomy.
Viberg tells you to go one size down from Brannock and these you should go .5 down it seems, but again, sizing is not exact and feet are weird.
Alright great! Thanks for the size advice. I’m a 7.5 in Viberg. So I went for an 8 in his. Went for a pair of short engineers. Hopefully will turn out well!

They're the same size as my Wesco, but my Attractions fit me more comfortable. I am a 10.5 on a brannock and I have a 10 in both of those boots, but the Wesco are slightly tight in the front especially on the left foot. The Attractions are not loose at all and if you're a wider foot, I would personally think you should go TTS. I can't say any of this for sure though, sizing is difficult.
I forgot to post these Flame Panda boots. He only sells on Instagram now, but he's a bootmaker from China who imports basically all of his materials and hand welts all his boots and on this pair (and I think all his boots) does hand sewing on the outsoles as well. His moc toes and monkey boots are my favorite so I got his monkey boots and I like them a lot. He does a triple sole on the front which tapers down to a single leather midsole with a full rubber sole in the middle before the heel stack. Quality is overall really good. The midsole/outsole stitching is very dense and quite clean for being done by hand, but not as clean as White Kloud by any means. Upper stitching is also overall really good and quite dense, but not as neat or consistent as Clinch. Either way, the boots are worth a lot more than the price in my opinion (which is around $670 for this leather.) That leather is Maryam natural horserump which does include the shell part. It is quite different from the leather on my Onderhouds which is also Maryam horse leather, but this version has a lot more shell in it.
Nice! How did you size on Flamepanda's? as compared to Viberg 2030 for example?

how did you size both RDT and Brother bridge compared to Viberg 2030 or red Wings?
I do not own any Red Wings, so I cannot comment on those.
However, I am a 7.5 in Viberg 2030. 8 in a Brother Bridge. RDT recommended me to go with an 8, however, I went with a 7.5 given how wide the forefoot is on the RDT Roots. Slightly snug on the top of the foot, but definitely ok length and width wise.
Awesome Onderhoud boots^. Construction looks good!

Recently started wearing the Junky 7161 again. Almost forgot how nice this pair is.
Edit*: Just realised why they were in storage for a bit. Forgot how much SC's denim shrinks when hot soaked. Size 31, but shrunk down to almost a 29 after a hot soak. Trying to stretch them back out to pre-soak measurements again.
