  1. As blasphemous as it may sound, I'm sort of tempted to sew down the tapered part on the back of my Tanker Jacket. The jacket is a great fit, I just can't get over how prominently the back can stick out.

i did this on a G-1 style leather jacket. improved the fit and silhouette tremendously and i wear it all the time. that being said, it was not an expensive BR jacket. think i paid around $25 for it. (it was also not a real G-1)

i've been tempted by the tanker jacket many times, but never purchased because of that very feature. anytime i have jackets like that, the side panels billow out and look like some fashion disaster from the 80s.

i say screw "blasphemy." it's your jacket so do what you want with it.

  2. welcome, all you 2nd batchers! i'm especially excited to see soonami in this contest! looking forward to comparing results with your warehouse contest jeans...

this thread needs some photos, so here's a batch of iphone pics of things i've done since the contest started (sorry, none of the jeans themselves):

spent a weekend in austin, eating flagrant foods...

dark chocolate bacon root beer float from foreign & domestic:

    5324749042_7467671984_z.jpg

(that's a cinnamon pork rind on top)

    obligatory BBQ tour stops...

    city market (luling, tx):

    smitty's (lockhart, tx):

    5324143411_27545702eb_z.jpg

tilt-shifted (obviously). smitty's in the background. this is just their modest lumber stack for the smokers...

not even really sure what this means, but i back it:

    5324749212_7f50b3e242_z.jpg

forget the name of the place where this was taken. chain spot closer to austin. not on the level of smitty's & city market.

stopped in at this little cabela's:

    5324749876_d8db39df9a_z.jpg

photo probably captures about 30% of the store. completely ridiculous. i could do an entire post on this place alone.

back in la. buddy hooked up some epic seats for los lakers:

    5324748806_8e54ab506f_z.jpg

went to a mochi making party and enjoyed lots of fresh mochi with some japanese friends the day after christmas:

    5324143979_12bdacebb2_z.jpg

spent a long new year's weekend snowboarding/relaxing up at mammoth:

what's everyone else been up to?

  3. Anybody else with some sizing info?

i've been looking into a pair of white's as well lately. i no longer order shoes without trying them on, so i went by the stronghold to see how white's felt on my feet. they didn't have much stock in my size range, so i wasn't able to find the "right" fit, but i can say that the semi dress felt noticeably different than any other shoe i've ever worn. erk posted an interesting anecdote about this awhile back (heel-to-ball vs. heel-to-toe measurements & being fit with a full size and width different from his normal size at the white's factory).

i really don't think you should guess at the size when buying white's. sending measurements definitely seems to be the way to go if trying a variety of sizes isn't an option.

  4. 60 days / initial soak only / not much going on yet:

    no photoshop or adjustments.

the potential of the 811s is already becoming very clear. we're all gonna have some amazing jeans!

when i have some more time, i'll post up some iphone photos of random stuff i've been doing in these that will mostly not include the actual jeans.

  5. tassle loafers used to be modstyle.

or are you talking of this awkwardly early eighties two-tone thing?

tassled loafers have been a lot of things over the years. my dad used to rock them pretty much exclusively - and he's just your standard ol' dad.

but loafers (esp tassled) and brogues are just as skin as boots in my mind.

    2389410823_3a73f890ab.jpg

^ lower left corner. it was a lot harder than i thought it would be to find a photo of a skin in tassled loafers. the fringe under the tassles (the "kiltie" i believe it's called) is also a must in this style.

i think Loake was the company back then. i feel like fred perry produced a variation on these within the last few years.

to be honest, i'm also a fan of two tone steez, but i think that's mostly just a reimagining of 60s soul & r&b style. anyone seen the specials SNL set (season 1 or 2) recently? hot fire. shit aged well.

  6. got my brother a natural bridal LGC belt for his birthday about a month back. took some comparison photos next to my 14 month old one. had a helluva time trying to get the color right, but you get the idea...

(edit: more precisely, i had a hard time with the exposure. i did not edit these photos at all. should be a bit lighter, but i was indoors.)

    5147293450_12675eeee5_z.jpg

i believe i treated mine once with obenauf's after about a year, but mostly because it ended up in a creek (with me) and had really dried out subsequently. i've never "tanned" it, and it doesn't see much sun as i rarely tuck my shirts in.

    - - - - -

on a separate note - does anyone have an opinion on black leather belts with brass buckles? i've been thinking about getting one, but i'm not sure if that would be odd. i feel like i've only really seen silver (or nickel) buckles on black belts...

also, does anyone have any experience with LGC bridle leather in "light brown" or "dark brown" that could share some photos or opinions? does it age well? etc...

    thanks in advance!

  7. http://hydrodynamica.com/

    next. level. shit.

^^ that is not next level. with a name like hydrodynamica there isn't any science in there worth jack shit. just some old dude rambling

there's no instant gratification worth jack shit in there; but if you take the time to look around, your mind might just be blown.

i'm well aware that 99% of superfuture doesn't surf or care about surfing, but i can assure you there is plenty of science in that site and that project.

give this one a try: http://hydrodynamica.com/totem/lord-board

  8. roys are now $275????? wow, glad i got them when them at a more reasonable price of $150.

and i was going to get my brother a pair for christmas... guess i'll have to figure something else out.

well if anyone has a 34 they want to let go of for $150, let me know!

    ummmm, cool story bro

    glass houses and all that?

  9. the fact that so many people ended up with ROYs that were too small is baffling to me. the man obviously took the time to explain how to measure/size very clearly on his site. the measuring tab has been removed from his site (since the sizing changed a touch and measurements are on SE now), but it was very simple:

step 1 - take a tape measure and wrap it around your waist where you wear your jeans. depending on how snug or loose you wear your jeans, you can manipulate this measurement up to an inch or two.

step 2 - accept the fact that the number is bigger than the size you normally wear.

step 3 - order the size that corresponds to this actual measurement.

    so what went wrong?

  10. to my knowledge (from working in retail, and from friends who own retail stores), standard retail markup is 110%. this is a general guideline, but of course, can vary greatly. while i have a deep appreciation for good retail, anytime i find a product to lust after, i always (without fail), lament the fact that there is not some way to buy directly from the manufacturer for about half the price (wholesale). the guitar that costs $1500? that's about $700 wholesale. the jeans that cost $315? that's $150 wholesale. and so on...

we were lucky to have this opportunity with roy.

the $275 price point makes perfect sense to me, given that there is now a retailer involved. assuming a 110% markup, SE is buying these at $130/pair.

with no disrespect to SE (in fact, respect for picking up an awesome line!), this makes me a bit sad for roy. the snowball was just gathering momentum for him, and a price increase to $200/pair would have tempered the onslaught and put more money in his pocket (if my calculations are anywhere near accurate, this would have doubled his margin). of course, being on the shelves at SE is gonna expand his brand awareness, but the innumerable fresh pairs that showed up on sufu doorsteps would have certainly led to a groundswell of interest on its own.

my suggestion? everyone who bought a pair before gets VIP status and can order pairs wholesale for life!

  11. Does a second hot soak really affect the shrinking Eternal denim?... I need the inseam to shrink about 0.5".

yes. i posted these measurements with my fit pics a few days back:

size 36 (TTS) hemmed to 35" inseam raw. measurements if anyone's interested (raw / post 1 soak / post 2 soaks):

    waist: 18.75 / 18.125 / 17.875

    Frise: 12.5 / 11.875 / 11.5

    Brise: 16.5 / 16 / 16

    Inseam: 35 / 33.5 / 32.75

    Thigh: 13.5 / 13.25 / 13

    Knee: 9.75 / 9.5 / 9.5

    Hem: 9.25 / 9 / 8.75

...so my 35" raw inseam shrank 1.5" with one soak, and another .75" with a second. back rise and knee were the only dimensions that didn't seem to shrink in the 2nd soak, but that was probably due to measuring inaccuracies. what was your raw inseam and what is it after one soak?

also, if this is a question of hemming, you'll want to keep in mind that these will continue to shrink up everytime you wash them for a while. i wouldn't be surprised to see a total of 4 inches shrinkage over the next 2 years.

  12. took some quick fit pics while i had the camera out the other night:

    5090081727_f11f292f25_z.jpg

    5090082191_31696a8bfd_z.jpg

(excuse the dirty mirror. not my room, incidentally.)

measurements if anyone is interested (raw / post hot soak / post 2nd soak worn in the tub)

    size 37x35:

    waist: 18.75 / 17.875 / 18.125

    Frise: 12.25 / 11.75 / 11.5

    Brise: 16.5 / 16.125 / 16

    Thigh: 13.125 / 12.875 / 12.75

    Knee: 9.5 / 9.25 / 9.25

    Hem: 9.375 / 9 / 9

    Inseam: 34.75 / 33.25 / 32.75

looking at these measurements now, i'm second guessing them because they look very close to my 811 measurements, but the 811s seem quite a bit slimmer through the leg. i kinda wish the ROYs were a touch slimmer from the knee down, but i love these anyhow. great jean for cuffing, as many have shown.

unfortunately, i won't be putting much wear on mine for awhile as i just started the eternal contest. it'll make the occasions where i do wear them a special treat though!

    ----

also took some measurements on the pair i got my dad. size 39x35 (raw / post hot soak):

    waist: 19.75 / 19.25

    Frise: 12.5 / 12

    Brise: 17.375 / 16.625

    Thigh: 14.125 / 13.625

    Knee: 10 / 9.75

    Hem: 9.75 / 9.5

    Inseam: 34.75 / 33.25

  13. I can't remember what I put when I repped you (!?) but I would say I find that, while I often hand- or machine-wash with Dr Bronners, when the g/f simply bungs em in the washing machine with evil corporate generic washing powders (non bio) they look a lot better, with more 'zing'.

haha - blackout rep? here you go: "excellent post. Can't wait to see post-wash pics. Wash em hot and don't pussy around with Dr Bronners!"

i'm probably gonna stick with a hand wash, but i'll consider using some evil corporate detergent.

which brand is most evil? i believe i have woolite and tide on hand.

  14. ran - i forget exactly how 2008 compares to other years, but i'm pretty sure 33s will be great for you. these things definitely shrink... and shrink... mine are TTS, and although they've seen plenty of water in the past, i'm a little worried what the forthcoming wash is gonna do to them. even if the 33 waist doesn't shrink down to 31 right away, they will be pretty slim through the thighs...

hey Paul, thanks for the rep - and i've got a question. i'm definitely planning on a nice hot wash. pretty set on a hand wash. i was going to use bronners, but i got a laugh outta your rep comment... do you think i should use normal detergent or do you have some other recommendation? why not bronners?

  15. thanks for the kind words and rep everyone! i'll see about getting some fit pics after the wash.

thank god i made it in before soonami posted his 660s again! soooo good.

i'm gonna have to go check up on some details in the sidxbeats thread - looking great!

poly - those AWs are looking better and better... i was gonna ask if they were cone denim. looking at the photos, the denim reminded me a lot of my LVCs. cone denim definitely just gets better and better...
