  1. I'm no burger snob I guess. All those places are pretty good. All are SIGNIFICANTLY better than burger spots here in Shanghai. Even that Hawaiian burger chain spot is pretty legit.

I'd rather stuff my face with lunch sets around Roppongi/Azabu though. (Hyoki, Matsurokuya)

    Or Kuumba.

Anyone got a Hawaiian rec actually? Poke, laulau, haupia, etc.

  2. Anyone done Dons de la Nature? Was thinking of taking parents there as I think somewhere like Quintessence might be too harcore for their scared-of-what-they-can't-recognize palettes. I haven't had a steak in Tokyo in like 10 years -- feels sort of tool-ish...

  3. Timeout is good everywhere in Asia, no? HK/Shanghai are both solid too.

    @herp -- gah so many places I miss  :(

I bought that Popeye food miniguide -- it's got a lot of random stuff you'd never normally check out. I left my copy in some coffee shop so I'll probably never know.

Mitsukoshi opening ceremony if you're in the area is pretty legit. Plus you can head up to the 8th floor and see 100k+ kimonos and the old OGs buying them for their bratty 15 year old daughters.

  4. No it's beautiful!!

Wrong audience for tinder anyway but the population seemed mostly really boring. Gyaru mode or foreign girls with rich parents on vacation. If all you wanted was a hookup it didn't seem too different from just going to Roppongi or something.

This is high praise for tinder, no?

  5. Ashley Mad clone? Tinder seemed reasonably active last time I used it in jland, though I guess mostly foreigners.

@herp -- yeah TY harbor is super chill. I've been making my way through cocktail bars past few trips. Def some very next level shit. Codename mixology, Bar Trench, and Gen Yamamoto were all legit. Way better than options here in Shanghai.

  6. Flightfox has been occasionally awesome for me. (Did some multi country hopping through lots of small airports, like Yakushima's and saved a ton vs what I could find via Kayak/Hipmunk)

Adioso I think is a great idea, just has never delivered for me. I'd definitely use a "Where can I fly cheap next weekend?" site with a nice layout.

I like thepointsguy's advice on maximizing points use generally; the layout/presentation style leave something, actually, a LOT to be desired though.

  7. @djrajio-- Looks like they're almost 2%-ish of notional still actually -- higher than I'd have expected given how things have gone. Japanese regulators send pretty mixed messages in terms of what role they want the ECNs to play. I expect with the exchange move out to the same physical colo next year there should be a bump in foreign participation at least. (If it ends up being one site to manage)

  8. SV is a crazy anomaly relative to everywhere. I'm not that comparison is super meaningful. There's definitely some forces that stifle TKO being a good option relative to Sing/HK for fresh businesses, but I don't think the issues are "cultural" or "talent" at all.

@DaBest -- Didn't realize we were in similar-ish space. W.r.t to Nomura, from the side of the biz that I've interfaced with, I've always felt they've had surprisingly modern tech infra.

  9. Shit, I was just in tko last weekend and I already miss it. Returning to Shanghai is like waking up in a dumpster of tampons and needles.

That du from Blue Star is o.O claiming he saw used panties vending machine.

That place in Jiyuugaoka with the soy donuts ACROSS from donut plant is pretty aight. I actually like Mr Donut Japan alright; Taiwan has totally different localization -- kind of gross there. I'd rather stuff my face with egg tarts anyways. I saw that Great Burger has a donut shop now too. BUT THEY DONT HAVE DADS ROOT BEER ANYMORE.

  10. P Hyatt has awesome gym. Like the only REALLY nice hotel gym I've ever seen in TKO. I just can't deal generally because:

    A) Shinjuku station is traumatizing and P Hyatt is super in africa and nowhere even near the station

    B) AirBnB + Ebisu/Nakame >> *

    C) I think FC 50% discount is done and I'm too jewish

    D) That bar is mad boring. Like I take my mom there when she's in town but I'd never go there with peeps

    E) I no longer appreciate Ds in 2chome as much as I used to

AirBnB in Tokyo is the best I've seen anywhere. Tons of mad nice places. Use common sense. Book early because stuff that's available within a few weeks is usually super overpriced per unit quality.

  11. Huge is done? I haven't read it in a LONG time but shiiiit. Brutus and Popeye both must have crazy research budgets -- it's always crazy to me the amount of shit they find in their travel coverage.

I'm pretty shocked that lumberjack cabin swag is still so popular in jp. I get how prep americana lasts for a decade+, but the flannel + native american accents thing has been going strong for sooooo long.

  12. I live here now. Who wants to trade info for beers?  -_-

Should I just taobao it to get a hk-version iphone? (REALLY wish I grabbed one in HK before I got here...since I'm stuck another 2 weeks waiting on residence getting raped by AT&T on data till then)

  13. Moving and beginning process of wardrobe trimming. All prices are in USD and include shipping w/ tracking/confirm worldwide from Chicago. Paypal pref. Offers also welcome.

    Dior Blood/Wine Button up Sz 38 (fits 38/40) -- 150

Really really great shirt. Restrained collar + cuffs. Great sheen. One of 10 best boring button ups I've ever owned. Maybe I'll keep but it's pretty small on my huge zangief body.

Perhaps more to come as I dig things out of closets/drawers.

    Tops

    RO 2L Darkshadow M / Black XL -- 150, 200

As with all of these, the sizes are meaningless basically. The black is less worn and thus "smaller". (As a 40, the black fits TTS)

  16. Took job at HF here and 99% chance moving to this den of madness in a month.

Anyone got a good real estate / rental agent contact? I've used a few but not really finding cool shit even at bonkers price points. (Beer kickbacks galore)
