  1. Not gonna comment on other people's lists, but here's mine:

    Black suit, well cut.

White shirt, black skinny tie. Sure, they're plain, but they're classic.

Black leather shoes, I like slip-ons.

Jeans, well-fitting of course, I like dark washes.

T-shirt... I happen to favor rock T's, most colors work.

Peacoat, again, well cut, black or dark grey.

Zip hoodie, brown or dark grey.

    Sneakers, retro or chucks.

Army Surplus or similarly style jacket, green.

Lighweight shallow V-neck sweater, dark grey, navy, brown. Can be worn in dress or casual situations.

Some kind of scarf, grey or brown. Maybe even a deep red.

    Black leather belt.

And I love my military cap. Grey tweed or black.

Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

    Matthew Good - Hospital Music

    Silversun Pickups - Carnavas

Wintersleep - Welcome to the Night Sky (okay, it's being released next tuesday, but I have a feeling I'll love it)

Recent purchases. Got a navy argyle sweater the other day. Now I can look like a dork in the office and stay warm at the same time! Was gonna get a messanger bag too, but it was on the sale rack when it shouldn't have been.

  4. alright "never". I got fucked eyes, good hearing..I did blind tests and heard the diff on CD vs MD back in the `90s ..sure I can tell the diff between CD off a good portable and an ipod even at 192kbps, MD is superior to MP3...Actually I read a lot of tests were most can hear the diff between CD and 128kbps..you dont know shit..you just dont wanna admit u wasted ur money on an ipod.

its about quality, not quantity kid. substance not the size of your HDD.

Most people can tell the difference between CD and mp3, it's a given. But I used to lug around a big fucking CD wallet, and now that I use an mp3 player, I'm glad. I can listen to a variety of stuff and not have to carry 5 lbs of cds. It's convenience. I can listen to higher-fi stuff at home. I still buy cds cuz I like the experience of getting something physical, something with some artwork and a booklet I can flip through on the ride home. But then I rip it to my mp3 player so I can take it wherever I go, and if I really, really want the whole experience, I'll play the cd on my hifi headphones at home, turn out the lights and just listen. Most other times, I find 192kbps is enough. But that's just me.

Basically, there's different opinions on this (and everything), not everyone agrees, but they don't have to. They're opinions.

    --------------------------------------

To keep this somewhat on topic: I'm somewhat addicted to CDs, but I only buy 1 or 2 a month. Definitely like discovering new bands though.

  5. Hmm. In order:

First I'm usually looking for a certain item.

Then I usually only shop at certain stores, so I guess brand.

    Design

    Color

    Price

    Size

    Fit

Usually if the price and fit are the biggest deciding factors, if they're no good, no sale.

  6. ???? he just wants a simple stereo. CD technology has barely advanced in 15 years. In fact most people's affinity for sound quality has gone downhill in the age of MP3s. You don't need DTS 9.1 MATRIXXX DUPER AC-5 SURROUND when the CDs are encoded in 2 channel STEREO. An old 30watt receiver with carefully chosen $400 new speakers will sound far better than some lame Home Theater In Da Boxx

Yeah man, gonna agree with you here as well. All the guy's asking for is a stereo to listen to his music. For that $1000 is plenty. Sure if he wants the hi-fi 7.1 DTS/Dolby etc etc, it's gonna cost a lot more. But he said he wanted a stereo, not a home theatre. (fuck, do they have 9.1 already? Jeez I'm behin the times.:D )

Theatres in a Box are crap, plain and simple. Unless you find one with some crazy custom-selected components, but then that's out of the $1000 range anyway. And not really a Theatre in a Box.

  7. Yeah, most people don't do the audophile thing, so a huge expensive hifi soundsystem is pointless. Just go for what will enable you to have decent sound for the music source you wish to use. If you can't tell the difference between an mp3 at 192kbps and the same one at 256kbps, don't bother with high-end stuff. And like people have said, if you haven't heard high-end sound and know little about audio, you won't really notice the difference, so just get what works for you and your budget.

Vintage will definitely get you good sound for a cheap price, my dad's got a nice vintage Technics setup. Of course there's not nearly as much convenience (no remote) so it's a tradeoff.

  8. Yeah, he's going to have to make sure his music's got a higher bitrate, that's about all he can do. I don't think he's looking for a super-hifi soundsystem, just something to play his music and sound alright.

I listen to most of my music off my computer harddrive, a huge disc changer just isn't practical for most people. But I make sure to rip stuff at a high bitrate so at least I'll get more sound quality than the standard mp3.

  9. I disagree about towers vs bookshelves. It really depends on your musical preference.

He could go for bookshelves from a mid fi brand like Paradigm, B&W, or Acoustic Engergy and add a subwoofer later on if he finds the bass lacking.

Yeah, that's what I meant by this: "Alternatively, you could set up a subwoofer with some smaller speakers but towers are more cost-effective."

But good bookshelves+subwoofer will cost more than a pair of towers, so if he wants to get it cheap, towers will give the best sound. Maybe for some people it's not as important but I need the whole range in my music. I do listen to a wide range of stuff including electronic, so maybe if all you listen to is rock and stuff, the bass is less important.

  10. Hello all,

I just moved into a new apartment and I need some help purchasing a stereo. I wanna do some bargain hunting but I need to be pointed in the right direction. I use an mp3 player for all my music so what would I need (dont want to buy ipod hifi or bose thing) to have the stuff work?

a stereo receiver and two speakers?> I'm kind of clueless about electronics so even if you guys know some good forums or anything.

I wanna buy some quality components, but dont have a ton of cash

    thanks!

Stereo receiver, speakers, speaker cables/wires, audio cable for connecting mp3 player to receiver. That's all you need.

Tower speakers are recommended over bookshelf/satellite speakers. Way better range and sound quality. Smaller ones are better only for surround applications, for music you want to ensure you have a good pair of tower speakers. Alternatively, you could set up a subwoofer with some smaller speakers but towers are more cost-effective.

No idea what your budget is but a decent basic (not great, but pretty good) setup will probably cost you $500. Don't go for cheapass generic/unknown/store brands either. Oh, and don't buy any of those all-in-one/microsystem/boombox type things, they suck.

Keep in mind as well, that if your mp3s are anything under say.... 192kbps bitrate, you'll notice the lack of sound quality when you listen on a good soundsystem.

Oh yeah, and wooden speaker cabinets/casing/whatever. Way better acoustics than aluminum/plastic (don't ever buy plastic speakers. Ever.).

  11. I must be the only person in the world who loves this shit, but this beer called McEwan's from Scotland is my absolute favorite. The darkest beer you've ever seen, strong (8%), but with a nice sweet flavor, not too much bitter... really great with salty foods.

Otherwise, Guinness, but you'd be surprisee how many pubs don't carry it around here. Then I step down to Sleeman's Honey Brown Ale which is nice for an everyday regular beer.

If all they've got is shit beers, I'll take a Kokanee please. Failing that... I guess I could force down a Corona.

  12. are we in a fight now poly?

because if we are my socks will fuck you up.

    lol

I'm on the black socks train too. I've got some grey, but I hardly ever wear them. Everyday use I just wear Hanes sport socks. They used to make them quite durable, but I find they wear out quicker lately, I may have to find an alternative.

Dress socks, I got some generic-branded ones I got from a cheap suit store. They're nice and thin, long enough, and comfortable.

    Holy, cashmere would be nice.

  13. Depends. Military is a popular trend right now but it's also a lasting look, a good jacket will still be wearable years from now, in my opinion.

I try to stay away from the overly-trendy stuff too (some of it is way too overdone), I just buy things that appeal to me personally, not just whatever's popular, and my tastes don't change that quickly. It just happens that those stores sometimes have things I like that fit my budget (which is pretty low), so it works for me.

Anyway, in the area of military-styled clothing, nothing beats the real deal if you can manage to find what you want.

  14. Thanks for the suggestions but for some reason, I can't bring myself to spend $$$ at UO or Le Chateau...

I might go the military surplus route and see what I can find...

I can understand about Le Chateau, but I wasn't aware UO had a stigma attatched. It's the same as H&M to me. *shrug* They don't have much for jackets right now anyway.

Military surplus is a definite possibility but if you find something you like you'll very likely need it tailored. But it's authentic so if you like that, it's a good way to go. If you were in Van I could steer you toward a couple stores but I'm sure Toronto's got lots of options.

Out of all the other non-surplus stores I think Zara is the best, they have a LOT of selection.

  15. used to use sumotech, but recently bought a small 1.8oz sebastian xtah crude clay to try.

will definitely NOT be using sumotech anymore.

I used to use sumotech but my hair's too damned curly for it to work. The fucked up thing is, I can wear it down and it looks completely straight, but up it never stays where I want it... and once it gets to a certain length I get the whole Farrah Fawcett thing going on, at which point I promptly get a haircut. I'd like to either have the short, messy bedhead-type look or the longer sort of shaggy style, but neither work for me. It's rather frustrating.

Lately I've been trying some cheap shit, Garnier Surf whatever worked okay, not too great though, and I got this pomade crap that doesn't do shit, and the only *ONLY* thing I've ever used that got my hair to look how I wanted was Got2b Hair Glue... but your hair is rock hard and looks kind of shiny. I also hate the wet gel look, and find gel never holds my hair anyway.

Some days I really hate my hair. I should try some of the stuff mentioned in this thread.
