  1. ^while I'm not too good with spicy food, though I enjoy having it from time to time. Very hot? Looks good, will make a mental note. Don't often go over there but I might make a iidabashi+kagurazaka trip out of it.

insomnia: thanks man. will make a stop at shindaita some time soon. Apparently there's some other place there called なんでんかんでん that looks decent too.

  2. best ramen in Tokyo? Though I could eat the stuff everyday, I try not to since I'm having trouble as it is fitting into cluthing over here, so since I'm not eating it too often I'd like to spend those times on the good stuff. Lately I've been feeling Koumen's tonkotsu and Hokkaido-style miso. Any particular shop(s) that stand out from the rest? Good gyoza is always a plus.

Up for sale is a fantastic navy jacket by mainline Y's (Yohji Yamamoto). 100% wool, notch lapel, 1 button closure. Incredibly sharp cut, as per usual for Y's it's slimmer than the regular Yohji Yamamoto Pour Homme cut. Deceptively simple, striking jacket with great lines and an incredibly soft hand. Impeccable construction/stitching, back of the collar is re-enforced with black wool, 4 working sleeve buttons, half lined in a silky material, striped lining through the sleeves, single vent, strap + 3 fastened metal rings (2 on right side, 1 on left) to optionally tighten the back and change the look. The selling point is the amazing navy wool gabardine, without a doubt on par quality wise with YYPH material, it looks great and feels incredible. For an easy-to-wear, sharp navy jacket this is all you need. Mid-weight, I've been wearing it up until now so I'd say it's a 3 season piece, excluding cold winters. The back is not lined.

Except for slight creasing in a few places, the condition is perfect. No stains, tearing, damage or anything like that.

There is no size tag attached, i'm guessing this might have been a sample. In my experience, it fits like a Y's size 3. About a 48, possibly between a 48 and 50. Except for the missing "real" size/fabric tag, it's the real deal. Corresponding jacket retailed at 70000 yen in Japan, you'll probably have to add about 30-40% to that for the US price.

    Measurements

    shoulder, across the back: 17.5"

    chest, pit-to-pit: 20.5"

    length at the back: 30"

    sleeve: 25.5"

Excuse the picture quality, some of them are a bit washed out. IRL, color is a rich deep navy blue.

  4. herpsky's suggestions are good. I know of a few decent bookstores but I can't remember them all now. I know the basement of Watarium in Gaienmae has a decent selection of art books and there's another small store just next to it (to the right, facing watarium) that is mainly focusing on art and photography books.

  5. yeah, actually I think you're right. I just remembered I tried to get only a SIM card last time (since I already had a phone from some time back) and I couldn't do that - I had to buy a phone as well. Which I think is still worth it if you're staying for even just a short while. I think if you plan to return to Japan within 6 months after you stopped using it, you can keep using that same SIM card if you bring it with you.

I don't know the benefits of renting vs purchasing a phone - the cheap models are around 4000 yen or so to buy. You also don't have to do it at the airport, you can get one a softbank (if they have any in stock) or Donki, which is what I've done twice now. If you go to donki, you need to speak some japanese though, or bring someone who does, since they require you to fill out some papers and I haven't come across anyone who speaks english there.

The shitty thing is that you won't have access to any of the internet services - ie, you won't be able to look up train schedules on your phone, so you gotta know when those last trains run.

  6. GAP / J. crew equivalent... Any house-label by select shops ala beams, and ships.

Yeah, Beams and Ships are good recommendations for what you seems to be going for. More expensive, but much better made and generally somewhat more interesting. I guess you could check out Journal Standard as well?

  7. I don't know how it works with iphone, but you can purchase cheaper phones (outdated models) and get prepaid SIM cards from softbank. I've done this several times, all it takes is an hour and a passport. Costs like 6-8000 to get a phone and a SIM card, then you need to charge it. Good for sending emails, drains money fast if you're making a lot of calls. Can't use any internet services though... Maybe I misunderstood you?
