  1. Grapist,

Does the DH boutique carry this messenger bag?:

    dloc1168_toi_n0n1_01.jpg

I've read there are two sizes, and it appears that Diabro only carries the smaller of the two, which is 12.79" long. My 15" MPB is 14" across, so I'm not sure it would fit. The larger version of the bag is supposed to be 36cm, which would be perfect, but I haven't found it anywhere. Any chance you could check on this next time you're at DH? Here's the Diabro link for more info:

and here's an article describing the two sizes:

I do realize this is a denim thread, but I thought maybe you'd know offhand if they stocked it. My black 19cms are perfect, btw- thanks again. Also, if anyone else owns or has seen this bag, is it fairly rigid, or do you think I could squeeze in a 14" wide MPB?

EDIT: I just reread that article, and it's actually from last year, so those measurements probably aren't accurate. Either way, I think this season's version is almost identical, so hopefully there are two sizes of it as well.

  2. I'll check the Dior concessions in Harrods and Selfridges but if I were you I'd try calling Saks Fifth Avenue, that's where I picked up my monogram one.

Any chance you could post a few pictures of it? I'd really like to see a few closer shots than those available online. Also, how much was it at Saks? It's $504 at Diabro, but the shipping is pretty high. Overall impressions would be great too - quality / value : price?

I had actually been considering the monogram version myself, I had no idea this existed. I'm pretty sure the black version isn't available online, so I'd suggest you call a DH boutique. They do take phone orders, shipping is $35 or so, and you can find the NY and LA numbers in the "Dior Homme Denim" thread, or TheGrapist's proxy service thread.

The monogram version looks great too, though a little less subtle:

  4. Fly 53 Track Jacket, like new, $25 shipped. Ordered from Chemical Records UK, at an unfortunate exchange rate. Original price was around $80, I believe.

    Measurements:

21.5" pit to pit, 30.5" arms (collar to end of sleeve), 26" length from top of collar.

Also, I apologize for the poor quality photos. Using a friend's digital as mine is currently out of commission, but needless to say, both items look much nicer in person.

  5. Why spend $100 million making a purposefully low quality movie with nothing particularly clever or creative?

I suppose you could ask 99% of hollywood film producers that same question, but that doesn't make it okay. Tarantino did something cool with his slot, Rodriguez just made a sort of tribute with no substance, just blood and guts.

Guess I'm in the minority that I actually liked the second set of girls. IMO, you were meant to not like the first set very much. They're all somewhat annoying to an extent, but the second group are much more likeable (and hotter as well).

If you think every black person who drops the word nigger every five words is making a Samuel J. Jackson impersonation, then... guess there's really no point in trying to argue that it was actually good dialogue, which it was. :) Maybe you were just too tired after the 2.5 hours of blood-spewing nonsense to appreciate talking.

I personally thought the second group of girls was much worse. Regardless of the trite "stereotypical black dialogue/mannerisms" bit, they just seemed like a bunch of trashy fourteen year-old girls trying to act like "tough" guys. Didn't pull it off at all. It's like those female standup comedians who try to do a Chris Farley bit; if you can't pull it off, don't try. I actually felt embarassed for the actresses, as they seemed patently oblivious to how tremendously they were failing to pull off the parts. I don't know if that's entirely attributable to the acting itself or simply to poor writing, but if I had to wager a guess, I'd say a large amount of both, probably about 60/40.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the very definition of a grind house movie "blood-spewing nonsense"? The point of Grindhouse was not simply to make something "clever or creative" (which to a degree, it was), but rather to make total unadultrated shlock that oozes style. Freddy Rodriguez was the very embodiment of that style; from the ridiculous twenty second montage of him spinning pistols to the ridiculously awesome hospital hallway knife scene, it was all about unecessary stylized violent excess. The intention was never to wow the audience with a remarkable ability to shamelessly drop the name "Vanishing Point" a thousand fucking times in every line. Generally speaking, when making a "tribute" to something, it's relatively tasteful to avoid explicitly slapping the audience in the face with that source material as many times as possible. That alone really killed it for me (if I recall, one of the characters even said "Vanishing Point is one of the greatest movies of all time!").

The true test of good Tarantino dialogue is whether it's quotable a few days, weeks, or months after seeing it. I personally can't remember a single noteworthy line, except maybe a few from Kurt Russell, most of which were in the previews. Don't get me wrong, there was some great stuff in Death Proof, but most of it only came around when the characters finally shut up for a few minutes.

  6. The glaring problem with Death Proof was not that the characters were unlikeable (which they were), but that they weren't even remotely interesting. It was like 45 minutes of bad female comics trying to do Samuel L. Jackson impersonations, and honestly it felt like some first-year film student approximation of actual Tarantino dialogue. Whether or not this was intentional, there is no possible justification for wasting two thirds of the movie on such utterly inane, pointless, and pathetically delivered dialogue. No style whatsoever, the conversation content itself was extremely bland and humorless, and it did nothing to develop the characters.

That being said, the last twenty minutes or so were great, and had they capped off something even remotely entertaining or worthwhile, I'm sure Death Proof would've been an incredibly satisfying film. It just seems to me that a large part of the Grindhouse experience is unrelenting excess, a concept that unfortunately only Rodriguez seemed to fully grasp.

  7. my 19cm's stretched out from tagged size 30 and when i measured it last, it was close to 34...waist is too big on me :( but you shouldnt have a problem with the stretch on those.

34! shit, everyone told me 31s would only go to about 34, but if the sizing is at all consistant, it sounds like I could be looking at 35 after stretch. Damn. Are yours MIJ or MII? How quickly do these tend to stretch?

    Now I'm worried...

  8. They're pretty tight around the thighs and near the waist, much tighter than my Nudie Bootcut Olas, which have notoriously tight thighs, but around the waist itself it's definitely a close call.

If I had to choose between a really tight look and slightly loose, I think I'd go with the latter, but definitely not an inch loose. TheGrapist said 31s were 33" and stretched to 34", but I forgot to measure before wearing them, and as I said they're now 33.5". Can anyone else verify how much these will actually stretch? My waist is exactly 34", but I'd like to figure this out soon in case I need to size down again.

  9. I'm a little concerned about the sizing on my 19cm MIJs; I've only been wearing them for about a day and a half now, but they seem to have stretched considerably already (size 31, they measure 33.5" in the waist, as opposed to the 33" I heard previously). Still a little uncomfortably tight, but not nearly as ball-smashing as everyone has described. My actual waist is 34", is it likely these will stretch all the way to 34.5"? Here's a photo:

    Diors.jpg

I just hope I sized right, it seems like a 30 would be way too small, but now I'm not sure...

  10. grapist is cool, but ^^ USPS is much faster than UPS as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah I've always been pretty unimpressed with UPS, as well as with FedEx and DHS. The only downside to USPS is that they're generally understaffed on location, so you end up waiting in line for 15-20 minutes, and of course the "tracking" is a joke. But otherwise, much quicker and far more professional.
