Yeah... ordered a pair of those, plus a pair of the SF special boot, plus a pair of the #8 wingtip plaza boots... all from LeatherSoul. I think I may need to find an alternate source of supplementary income soon... doing what, I'm not sure...
The reason I blame Tom is that he keeps offering up all these fantastic boots!
Are the SF specials up for order now? Last I heard they were on the back burner becasuse not enough horses had been dying.

It's really too bad they don't put a stacked leather heel on the GT. That would make it perfect.

Great color combo. I'm personally not a fan of the double leather and rubber. It's just a bit much. Might be because I have small feet and I know that a very thick sole looks silly on me. Good looking boot.

I'm looking forward to seeing those Greg. Also looking forward to seeing what sort of bill they come with.

I've been considering a pair of pull on boots for my next pair. Something along the lines of RM Williams yard boot.
Maybe even the Grenson Sharman: http://www.pediwear.co.uk/detail.php?stock_ID=2139
Something casual to yank on when running the kids to school, that sort of thing. Any suggestions along these lines?

This thread is why I'm on superfuture.
At this point I think it's the best place on the internet (in english anyway) for discussing high end vintage or classic styled boots with a bunch of side excursions into resoling and polish and shoes and god knows what else.
I think it's deserving of it's own forum along with other leather goods that don't have a good home. My only concern is whether there is room for a forum that will largely tilt toward one aestetic. It would make me weep to see this great thread turned into it's own forum only to see it turn into a bunch of sneaker/high fashion shoe posts.
I'm torn.
Of course it would make me feel a little less weird coming into the denim forum to talk about shoes.

Wearing around my smokeumpers today and I have to say that they have the most comfortable toe box of any pair of boots I own. It's amazing how soft the leather is and even though the sole feels stiff when the boot is off it really feels nice and supple when on. I'm not completelly used to the tall heel but the rest of the boots are perfect.
I can't wait to get my semi-dress. 6 more weeks is going to be a long time.

Everytime I see reference (or pictures) of White's I am interested - until I see that forsaken slanted, almost cuban, heel. Is that standard across all their boots?
They make the lace to toe dri foot outdoorsman which has a more standard vibram sole on it. No big heel. I'm not sure how far you'd be able to customize that boot with them though. Take out the waterproof liner, shorten and remove the padded collar, double leather sole... By then it's a completely different boot. The boot does look like it's on quite a different last though.

I posted this a while back, didnt' get any responses....
What is the point of leather soles? As far as my experience has shown me, rubber soles last longer, don't slip, and are superior to leather soles. I owned leather soled allen-edmonds for over 2 years and wore them every day of the week for school. They're beat to hell now, heels have fallen apart and the soles are worn down terribly. The actual shoe is in great condition though, and I think it's a shame that I'll have to spend near to $100 to get them resoled when a rubber sole would still be in fine condition. I've never had anything like this happen with a rubber soled shoe. Why do all these premium name-brand shoes use leather soles? is there an advantage I'm just not seeing?
1. Tradition - good shoes are built this way. So are lots of cheap ones as well, but all of the good ones are. There is also tradition in wearing leather soled shoes. It's a very 'grown up' and proper thing to do for business and such. Mark of an adult and all that.
2. Feel - leather soled shoes feel different. They flex differently and most importantly they hit the ground and move differently. They click a bit when they hit. They're somewhere between a bit slippery and very slippery depending on the surface. When you wear them they just feel different when you walk. Some people hate it. Some love it.
How are leather soles better? Let's not use the word better and just say that sometimes leather soles are preferable.

Chicken, are those Packers?
I swear, whites should have someone here take pictures of their boots. The photos they have are terrible. In person the boots look great and the photos taken by people here are beautiful. They look the worst in Whites own photos.

Now I'm starting to think about covering the bottoms of my #8 indys.
Must resist... have to keep something leather....
Damn you and your sexy cats paws!

I wouldn't use saddlesoap, it's alkaline (bad mojo for leather), and miniscule soap residue hangs about after rinsing. The best thing is Lexol-pH for a leather soap.
I've read this a couple of times about saddlesoap and I'm sure it's a reasonable line of thinking but I've also personally ridden on saddles that are over 50 years old that have saddlesoap used on them whenever they get dirty. It's hard to know what to think sometimes.

I wore the smokejumpers the rest of the day and I think I'm really going to like them. I even did some work in them. Sort of. I changed the battery in my wife's car. It's sort of work anyway.
After I took them off tonight I hit them with some mink oil and I noticed that in some of the seams and especialy around the welt there is quit a bit of old polish/wax/oil buildup. What's the best way to go about removing this and getting back to square one. I'm thinking of picking up some saddle soap tomorrow and starting with that but if anyone has any other suggestions I'd love to hear them.

The mailman brought me a pair of ebayed Whites Smokejumpers today. Quite a boot. After an hour of wearing my arch and the boot are still not convinced that they're best friends. I think they'll learn to get along.
I'll post some pics if the baby naps sometime before I have to pick up from kindergarten. That's not likely to happen though,

If I did that I'd come back with new laces attached to new boots. Very expensive way to buy laces.

I'm also in the all eyelet camp. My indies have speed hooks but I prefer boots without them. My Russells and my cigar wingtips are both all eyelet and they don't slow me down enough for me to care. I really dislike snagging speedhooks on pants. I'll be ordering my Whites from Bill with all eyes.

They are shell. I don't like the squareness of them though.
In all the old nasty nearly dead pairs of shells I've seen I've never seen them crease. I know that leather has been extensively distressed but it just looks like it's behaving a lot more like horse hide than shell.
There's always something new to see though. Very interesting.

Those aren't shell cordovan. There's creasing on them that you can't get with shell, it just doesn't act that way.
Pretty cool boots though. I'm not much for fashion boots but those have very nice proportions to them. Nice pickup.

Those really are beautiful shoes. I'm in love with the tap and how seamless it is. Let us know how they break in.

Which pointer jacket? (since I can't see in in the picture)

Military boots made by Dehner of Omaha, Nebraska. Unknown age. Belonged to one Captain Frank P. Gannon Jr. whose name was put in gold lettering on the inside of each boot.
They were in poor condition when I bought them a couple of years ago and have deteriorated still more despite my care. If anyone knows what style of boot this is and where I could get another pair I would appreciate the information.
You can still get them from Dehner http://www.dehner.com/
They're the strap tank boot. The example shown has a much shorter strap which only goes around the boot once but in the ME version of the boot that they show in current brown roughout leather as an active service boot they have a much longer strap. They're supposed to be absolutely top notch. A boot company that I've been wanting to try.

I'm always impressed with how little cuff wear vintage work pants show. They really did wear them a whole lot shorter than we wear stuff now.

White's was nice enough to donate a pair of boots to the American Cancer Society SuperCause Auctions..... They didn't last long! Snapped up fast. Much thanks to the happy buyer!

They're mine! All mine!
Thanks Bill. Should be very cool boots.

Thanks for the heads up, really appreciat it.
Went and checked the thread to see exactly what it ended up as and I'm just not feeling a plaintoe medalion. I think it's going to end up being too dressy for what I do clothing wise.
