  1. wicker park is pretty well-stocked as far as shopping is concerned.

hejfina is there (they carry comme des garcons, cloak, engineered garments, etc). there're a couple other random clothes shops (mostly of the meltin' pot variety, but every now and again you can find some cool shit there).

earwax cafe is right by hejfina and they have great food (especially if you're a vegetarian). it's on milwaukee.

there's a great vietnamese place (vien dong) on clark. great food and it's not touristy.

if you're into books, i recommend checking out myopic (it's basically across the street from hejfina).

i don't really do much clubbing/bar hopping so i can't help you there.

  2. you know, i really tried to get into sufjan. my friends had recommended him to me right after michigan came out. i gave it a listen and thought it was all right. nothing phenomenal, but not bad either.

then he sort of exploded all over the indie radar. illinois came out soon after and, minya, i have to agree with you- it really does exemplify all that's bad about indie right now (in that it's pretentious, ironically self-aware and, as you said, "overwrought"). i went back and listened to michigan and noticed much of the same. i've pretty much written him off since.

  3. maybe because the japanese will buy more than the american market? make sense to me. but, i think your main problem is that you're an XL, i doubt w+h/w&h sells a lot of XL's therefore it's not beneficial for them to make them and not beneficial for stores to buy them. there's plenty of S, M, L's that are easy to get a hold of if you look. but yeah. peasant has some XL's...

i was talking with brian at peasant a couple weeks ago while he was on the phone with his w+h rep. apparently (according to this rep) the xl's actually sell out first. so, yeah, i think his size may be a major component of the problem but for the opposite reason.

and yeah, last time i was there, peasant had some xl's. they were also taking direct orders from people a couple weeks ago. i don't know if they still are/can though.

  4. i don't speak french but does comme des garcons roughly translate to "i like the boys" or is it "he/she likes the boys"

comme des garcons literally translates into "like boys." the "like", as it's used here is a synonym for "resembling" and not for "attracted to" or "enjoys."

boy-like or boyish could work as rough translations.

it's been a little while since i've had the need to speak french, so i may be a bit rusty but i'm pretty sure.

  5. well obviously it depends on how hard you rock them... if you live in a city where you have to walk a lot (with very steep hills too!), and if you skate or bike in them, they are gonna stretch out a lot... if you just rock them around the house or in the office and drive your SUV or sedan with an automatic transmission to places, you're not gonna get very much wear or stretching...

this is a great point. i wear my diors when i'm biking and skating so they've stretched the fuck out because i move around in them so much. now that it's cold out my outdoor activities are more limited so i bet if i wash them now it'll take longer for them to stretch back out again.
