  1. there's a difference between stupidity and laziness

Sometimes there is a difference, but, as I will clearly explain, in this instance there isn't. Assuming that the savings by using rakuten is $100 and the extra time it takes to sign up for the service is 15 minutes (roughly how long it took me) and assuming no other costs, then it is simple to determine whether the issue is laziness or stupidity.

If our hypothetical jeanshopper is employed and makes a sum greater than or equal to $100 every 15 minutes, or $400 every hour, then it may be explained as laziness: he would gain nothing by spending those extra 15 minutes, and if he makes more than $100 /15 min. he is actually losing money by signing up with rakuten. If, and this is the more likely scenario, our hypothetical jean shopper earns less than $100 every 15 minutes, then it is stupidity, because he will have to work more than 15 minutes--the very sort of extra work that the truly lazy abhor--to make up that $100.

Obviously, this math will be different for the indepentally wealthy, those on a fixed income, and welfare cheats, but it should apply to most everyone else.

  2. All the pairs I have are the 11mw. I wore one pair quite a bit and it faded well. The denim starts out much lighter in color than any other that I know of. It is also a nice light weight and very soft. I don't have any pictures right now, but maybe in a bit.

  3. I have 3 pair, and everything that Giantsdrink said is correct. Sanforized, little shrinkage. Also, these tend to run large--I have a pair marked 32 that measure about 35 inches. Great jeans though. They used to show up pretty cheap on ebay, but not for a while.

  4. I was wondering if anyone could comment on the horween chromexcel leather that they use on the red wing 1911s. As others have posted before, they do not sell them in the US, and abroad they sell them for $350 and up. I'm just wondering whether they're worth that price when I could buy something like Alden which would last a lot longer.

There is no reason why those Red Wings wouldn't last just as long as Alden's. Both are repairable and resoleable. Horween is a major and very well-regarded U.S. garment leather manufacturer, and in all likelihood at least some of Alden's leather comes from Horween as well.

  5. I don't care much for the indies either. Part of it for me is that I just haven't seen a picture of actual vintage work boots that look anything like them. I think that the red wings 1900 series is much more consistent with actual vintage work boots like these from an old Ward's catalog:

The other thing about the Aldens is that I just can't come to grips with shoes that expensive that aren't leather lined. Canvas is okay under some circumstances, but for 300 dollars I want a leather lining. So one of these days I am going to put my 405s on the bay because I just don't wear them.

  6. I have been thinking about getting these for a while, so I have a couple questions:

    1. I thought that they shrunk to the label size, but you say those are 38s that shrank to 35-36?

    2. I prefer higher wasted cuts, what is the measurement on the front rise after shrinkage?

  7. The Japanese LVC 47 may very well be cut differently from the American/European version, as the Japanese 55 is definitely different than the American/European. I say go for the Japanese and you can always flip them on supermarket if you don't like them and buy the 55s from Cultizm.

  8. The dead giveaway is the overthetop contrasty fade and the slubby texture. Paper tag big E levi's just weren't that slubby. The other big giveaway is that anything that could actually date or identify these is either missing or not pictured. So, the seller could have shown the back of the top button, but he doesn't want to because it will show the number 501 which is a dead giveaway for a thai fake. Paper tag is ripped off to suggest age and so seller doesn't have to give a close up of a tag that must be obviously fake.
