Well, I'd say based on your fields you'd be able to find SOMETHING. If not full time, then at least freelance.
Do you know anyone living in NY? Obviously, it'd be way easier to find something through a friend.
If not, then just go to some industry bullshit and mention that you're looking for work. That would work better for your friend and less for you, but c'est la vie. Though thats based on the fact that I don't hear about a lot of IT industry get togethers.
As for living, if you're willing to live in a spot that isn't super duper happening you could totally pull off $1300. And I'm talking $650 + $650, not $1300 + $1300.
I can say that Ridgewood, Queens off the L/M will have places in your price range, as I lived over there with some roomates for 3 years. You'll get a decent amount of space, and you'll be close to the asshole parade that is Williamsburg. Its relatively safe - plenty of families, but its definitely a bit rough around the edges. Used to skate some spots in the neighborhood super late at night and never ran into problems, but I could see the wee hours being an issue for some.
If you're willing to share a bed or sleep on a couch, you can live in just about any neighborhood you'd like, but fuck that shit.
Edit: If you're the bike riding/car owning/bus loving type, you could have a look at Red Hook and Maspeth too. They're kind of cut off in terms of public transport, but rents are cheaper and you get a fair amount of space.

oddfuture.com (NSFW?)
Tyler the Creator & Earl.
Beats are good, delivery is good, but the content is pretty rough (like old Eminem but a million times worse + Satan).
Probably late pass, but I just heard this shit last night and its pretty different.

Any recommendations for DWR sprays (are some more effective than others on poly/cotton blends)?
I don't have much of a point of reference, but Nikwax worked really well for me on my lined Patagonia softshell.
Followed the directions, and now my shit doesn't wet out anymore.
Almost as good as the factory finish, and the bottle is good for a few treatments.

Hey, so you dudes that shoot film, what kinda hardware are you using to scan this stuff?
Are you doing negatives or the photos themselves?
I've got like, stacks of stuff just waiting to go digital, but I want to make sure I don't buy a piece of shit scanner, na mean?

...i have no knowledge whatsoever in riding a bike and none of my immediate friends are bike owners either. if, say, i wanted to get some absolute beginner's lessons with rented bikes or something like that, would you know a place to recommend? i've seen some people talk about MSF, but this seems to require some prior knowledge from what's implied...
Thats not the case at all. The BRC (basic rider's course) is roughly 1/3 classroom time, 2/3 riding time. You learn how to handle a bike and all that good stuff on paper, then you take it to the pavement, then you're tested on it.
I'd say that someone who has never set ass on a bike before would be fine taking the BRC - the one that gets your DMV road test waived.
And now to bring the strife part of the thread back!
I got rear ended on my beater in Belmar this past weekend. Happened at a red light. Dead stopped traffic behind and in front. The lady just drove once the light changed and failed to notice me in front of her. Bike out from under me, head onto her hood, then once she stopped I got thrown to the ground on my side/back in front of the downed machine.
Bike was a 98 GS500 with ~31k miles on the clock, and it seems like shes going to be totaled.
Spent 3 hours in the hospital and missed a wedding ceremony, but I'm not much worse for the wear. Baseball sized bruise on my hip and a wrecked pair of jawnz. Nice to be a MTGATT guy.
Not sure if I should hop up my CL450 or buy another beater with the insurance money. Decisions decisions.
Ride safe!

Settlers, Dominion, and ZOMBIES!!! have been in pretty heavy rotation with me.
Dominion is a good one to get new folks hooked on more nerdy board/strategy games.
It plays fast and you don't need to be TOO into strategy (although it helps) to win a game or two.

anyone know general robert ryan rates?
3 years ago or so it was in the neighborhood of $100/hour or so.
That doesn't really help much, huh?

Only being able to work on my CL450 sporadically on the weekends has me considering just buying a new DR-Z400SM.
I thought the thing would fire up while I was at my mom's house on Wednesday - threw some gas in the tank, got to kicking, and the fucking fuel line to the left carb tore.
If I don't get to ride the CL soon... I'm just going to get motarded.

...try to ride the bike you want in the class that you want to buy. they usually have a mix of standard, cruiser, dirt, and sport bikes.
This too!
...although in NJ everything with the exception of 4 bikes were Suzuki GN125s.
And with regard to not dropping your bike - if you drop it on the first day, you'll catch shit for it, but its fine. If you drop it during the test, you automatically fail.
So yeah, just get in the habit of not dropping it.

Registered for the MSF in June, any tips/tricks/hints?....
(1) If you get a bike that idles shittily, get a different bike.
(2) REALLY figure out the clutch's friction zone ASAP.
(3) Don't drop your bike. At all.
(4) Don't sweat it. At all.
The written is a joke, and unless you royally fuck up on the ridden, you'll be fine.
And as for bikes, CBs/CLs go for pretty cheap on CraigsList.
I got a '73 CL450 for $500, dumped another $500 into it, and it runs (and looks) like a champ now.
Oh, and try out a bunch of bikes before you settle on any one model. My friend got a Rebel 250 because he wanted something small too, now hes psyched on my other friend's R6.

...Should be in street boxes any day now if they aren't already...
Well, #7 wasn't in the box today, but someone else's change sure was.

Finally coming out in the US this year, pretty stoked.
Damn dude, I've been looking for a vintage street bike smaller than my CL450... that shit would be rad if I had $3k kicking around.

sir, that is a retarded idea
Rad book though.
Makes me want to quit my job, haha.

...Let me know how it goes but Ill probably just go with Steve.
I'm being lazy and not reading the beginning of your exchange, but Eli also works out of Smith St. and he does awesome shit too... just in case you're on the fence about which artist you're going to go with.
He did pretty much all of my friend's stuff, and shes a stickler for good work.
Anyway, I just moved over into Carroll Gardens so I'm definitely going to have to hit those dudes up for some work.

Definitely sick.
What'd you seal your top layer with (assuming its plywood), and does it splinter often?
Looking to resurface my outdoor jam with a plywood top. Masonite is just too high maintenance.

...Axion is back...
Thats awesome, Kareem Campbell is the man.
I think my first pair of skate shoes were his model on Axion.
Rugged-ass navy blue sneakers. They ruled.

i doubt newark / irvington are down with that flag...
Haha, yeah dude, the NJ Mason-Dixon doesn't start until you hit Brick!

Went to the skate park today. It was 15 degrees out and I couldn't warm up for shit...I'm going to have to start hitting the indoor park...
Fuck that shit. Lots of thin layers, a balaclava, some gloves, and go shred.

Just a heads up –
Woolrich goes on sale on gilt.com Wednesday morning 9am PST. I like woolrich.
Big ups dude, I ignore Gilt e-mails 90% of the time so I almost missed out on a small khaki hunting pullover.
Oh, and:
Dig those wool pullovers, weird they don't have a hood though. They DO have hoods in the description:
Long sleeve cotton hunter print chino pullover. Button removable drawstring hood...Super weird they wouldn't have a photo of one all hooded-up though.

Linux is ill.
Unfortunately, I do the PC gaming thing, so I need to keep a copy of Windows on hand.
Any time a family member asks me to build a machine, I drop Ubuntu on it, set up the menus to be in the same spots they would be in in Windows, load it up with free software, and hand it off.
Anyway, I just put Ubuntu 10.10 on the personal machine yesterday and haven't gotten to use it much.
Specs:
Q6600 OC'd to 3.0GHz on air (assembled this rig RIGHT before the Core iX shit happened, bummer)
8GB Dual Channel PC6400 DDR2
1x1TB 7200RPM SATA
1xGeForce GTX 260
1x24" monitor
And uh, some nice scissor switch keyboard that I fuckin' love.
