  1. when i mentioned this discussion gets drawn out to perpetuity, and you being a key speaker, i wasn't expressing fatigue (though i can understand if others would). i'm always keen on what you've got to say.

you know that shit when you see it.

 as much as i practise this myself, there lies a problem with who's doing the authenticating, and who among the authenticators should have the final say. what you, and the reference to moth, seems to describe is an uninterrupted and seamless progression of stylistic appreciation; i believe to be sincere and admirable but i find problems with the slight innateness ascribed to it. can there be no latent undercurrents, or certain events that change an outlook, or even, dare i say, inspiration and to some extend emulation, that give rise to an adoption of a style or aesthetic outlook? (on second thought i'm quite sure someones already said this and i'm just being a parrot).

" Let alone fuuma's gleeful insistence that airs and pretense are all we're ever capable of. I'd like to at least leave open the possibility of living life without pandering to an audience or giving it any consideration whatsoever. "

The possibility, as you say,  should be open but i don't think it's available to who ever frequents fashion forums or discussion pertaining to it. the closest example i can think of of the truly oblivious, indifferent and idontgiveafuck mindset towards presenting oneself would be those certain academics you come across who wear the most dreary, humdrum and inoffensive fits composed of a cardigan, slacks and some orthopedic shoes (granted they gotta show up to work according to a dress code) . we, you included, on the other hand put up clear signals and filters for the people we want to attract to or repel from of our ideal social spheres.

further on the airs and pretense note: it's clear that most of what we're against is the hopping from one trend to trend -- reaping in all the 'cool points' that are left until it gets saturated by the mainstream -- and while doing so there is a check in place so the images and symbols surrounding it are correctly projected. here i mean 'correctly' to be performing 'being legit' so as to not reveal any disingenuousness; some do this poorer than others and there's always someone provide some backlash for it.

what's said here doesn't end the discussion of course. way too many moving parts to really come across a unifying theory of putting clothes on (but to be honest it's a lot more that just putting on clothes whether any of us like it or not). i’ll post more on the other side if I have some further thoughts, but don’t hold it against me if things go to stale mate again as this discussion often does.

  2. sawyer, you're probably getting a bit confused because the discussion starts a page back. to clarify, the zebra pants (lol) reference was from merz's post, and by 'triad' i mean them all black dressing HK gangsters -- if you look back at it again i was laying out examples of stylezzz.

i've come across tonnes of shit i don't understand or care for on forums, but i haven't and don't find it necessary, pictorially or not, to make it explicit that i am. posts made on an open forum, in case you haven't caught on, are made with the aims that people may join in -- and this is entirely optional, have something to say or move on.

BUT i think, as merz suggested, your graphical confessions (such pretty pictures! do you have  tumblr portfolio?) reveal something else, besides indifference to some content, entirely.

  3.

haha, it sure is. you should have seen mike nouveau from around the same time though, zebra-stripe jeans and all. somehow the intense waft of douche all those dudes exude kind of persists no matter what costume they've donned since.

sounds like you're fighting over my dick, mate

    with yourself mostly.

i'm not entirely familiar with mike, besides his fits on sz, so i'll leave it at that.

actually this is probably a good chance to evoke the persistent and expansive (multi-forum) topic of 'being legit.' in macro's defence, who used to post here too, the 'poet-darkrocker' look, in facile terms, or in even more facile terms -- the sz-atelier look/schema, seems to coherently follow from the aforementioned picture, only, the later stages just represent a buying into of 'high' fashion, concomitant with higher spending power. hence, 'graduated.'

one could also make reference to your bucket hat (flower pot?) pic of the past and compare it to macro's on the basis that it represents the earlier stages of sartorial cultivation.

i'm tempted to end with 'so what are your thoughts?' but you've thoroughly expounded on the topic in the past, and on the multiple discussion forums. fuuma had a great post somewhere saying 'there is no authenticity,' at least in our age, which is what i agree with. and by saying this he wasn't, in my understanding, defecting from the argument but rather commenting on fragmentary and permeable act of contemporary consumption -- in its most extreme case it gives way to a zebra pants-to-harnden timeline, or a street/skate wear-to-goth triad enforcer timeline etc etc. i remember making a post on unwvn to the same effect, only longer and more sardonic so the point was sorta lost.

  4. im up for it, though i dunno how a book club works. checked the first few pages of this thread; it seems involved. i'm very malnourished in terms of literary consumption. we'll see how it goes :D

may i suggest 'in search of lost time' ? <- i've had 2 false starts with this, mainly because a dude going over the vagaries of insomnia and memory puts me, a self professed insomniac, to sleep.

or maybe, 'the corrections' (Franzen) ?

  5. I'm no expert in Sino history/culture, being raised in a western setting myself, but I do conjecture that the communist mindset gets overstated a bit (who knows?); I guess in origin these mannerisms could be said to come from it. I agree with your last line suggesting that it's mostly people following suit, in accordance with what they see in their setting.

    Back to the original poster:

You have to really assess what's annoying you or giving you grief. Are you getting chronic episodes of discomfort from the people? Or are you over focusing on a few isolated instances in your mind? If it's the last case then it aint that bad, since you'd get this in any country. Just gotta 'get over it.' Maybe you should take after Rick Owens and create your own little universe regardless of location (he said this somewhere in one of his numerous interviews).

Anyway. Anyone notice how a lot of mainlanders have STANK breath?

  6. This'd make for a fun read:  :)

I don't think I could live in a society where people are just consistently rude, socially unaware and have little respect for others. Then again my other half always goes on about how I was brought up with too many manners and how it's a cultural thing...

Usually the manners you and I are used to get their gears shifted up and down, so it's more of a case of formality/informality with regards to context and to whom you are with (friends, strangers etc).  For PRC's, complete obliviousness to it all reaches wtf-saturation, especially when it's an almost stubborn kind, in multicultural settings; if it were confined indigenously, I'd be fine with it, but it seams overseas travel for them fails to 'enlighten.' Luckily, the more multiculturally educated they are (read English) the more aware they are. Being half chinese myself, you wouldn't believe my sigh of relief when I witnessed for the first time the complete inversion of this 'vulgar public etiquette' in other asian countries -- basically anywhere not PRC, but most exemplified by Japan.

For further clarification to those who conflate all asians as a monoculture, :P , PRC's, aka Mainlanders, pretty much receive a unanimous disliking from countries who have chinese ethnic roots but have split ways in terms of boundaries and culture, for example Singapore and Hong Kong. My mates, who are originally from these places, have an anti-mainlander sentiment that some fail to recognise because they intuitively think 'but aren't they Chinese too?'

  7. the inability to annotate properly is definitely the major drawback at the moment. i manage to get by since a lot of my texts are in PDF/ adobe reader format, which i find has the richest annotation features thus far. i read between an ipad (supinated) and a laptop (at a desk); but they need to implement a way to sync annotations better.

unfortunately the access to academic or non-mainstream titles still have years to develop to a stage comparable to music. i still rely on libraries and their books with other peoples nasty underlining and annotations. worse than shitty graffiti.

re conqueror: checkout booko.com.au , it's an aggregate search engine that brings up the best price around you

  8. fit of the jacket looks decent in the pic. i'm more of the opinion that small/tight clothing on small people makes them look even smaller. i don't think going the other way round (for example, drowning in a pool of xxl yohji) helps either. its gotta be just right.

    goldylocks 4 lyf

  9. i think that's an awesome watch.

    why not just replace it?

so much lore to that piece. i'd definitely have one if i wasn't stuck on mechanicals.

yeah its good, i wouldn't change anything on it. but my fancy self wants something a bit more upmarket than plastic.

not aware of the lore though; googled it and it came up with terrorist bombs.

  10. Any recs for a watch that is digital, and has a timer and a light, and is not bulky either?

Basically i want a replacement for this:
    250px-Casio_F-91W.jpg

if nothing suits the bill, ill have to go for the silver version... sigh

  11. I've been there as a tourist. And as a guest of a friend who took me places non touristy. Wasn't much difference between the two experiences; can you guys tell me otherwise?

Also, is there a noticeable anti-mainland chinese sentiment there? I kinda sensed it last time I was there, and can't blame them.

And yeah, the food is consistently pretty awesome.

  12. re: usher, dj flame's pretty much right, but i'd like to add:

that dude clarence in the video is actually very flexible (he's from a tricking background). i wouldn't call his a butt wink either; it never goes beyond neutral.

some people with a butt wink (that produces a curve) seem to be fine in the bottom position, but i'd highly recommend fixing it, with hamstring stretches, since it can pull other muscles/joints in a weird fashion to compensate. when i used to lift, i'd have a butt wink if i didnt warm up/stretch, which would slightly pull on a nerve and produce a slight cracking sound in the tibia.

note on the bounce: it's essential in oly lifting. for squats, that helpful return energy (if you time it right) aids the bottom portion of the squat, but doesn't help after you go beyond parallel (the sticking point) since it's bouncing up and then back down. most high lvl oly lifters use pause reps in movements that have a bounce (bottom of the squat, and between the dip and drive of the jerk) so they know they know they have the strength, in a addition to the bouncing ability.

i can ramble on more about the bar/body bounce if you want; i'll leave it there for now.

  13. wait.. i thought internet fashion IS fashion

what a guy, that ol' Milspex...

    bless his heart

    yeah there's trueness in that

... but what if you live in the middle of nowhere with nobodies and your version of 'real life' sucks? here i think an internet connection can help

    re: okonomi

i get what you're saying, but i think tinfoil is just reflecting everyone elses lie and disingenuousness when they're in experimental mode, trying to find 'their own style' (everyone goes through this). It's just too bad he documents it .

  14. ^in regards to aesthetics, what do ya recommend for fast twitch muscle groups (abs/forearms/calves)?

It's fine to ask people to spot you, just make sure they're not sweaty, or they'll sweat on you.

anyone have some quick vids or reference materials for oly lifts? I want to start doing them. I only do deadlifts and want to do more.

lol gripped the bar wrong and ripped off my callous last time i dl.

glenn pendlay's forum is good, judgin by the few times ive skimmed through. his youtube channel is california strength; i think they posted up a decent clean or snatch tutorial (simple to follow and they start you off with the main points of the lifts, rather than nuances)

http://www.catalystathletics.com/articles/article.php?articleID=129 checkout this article. highly recommended. other articles/blog entries from that site are good too.

http://www.dynamic-eleiko.com/sportivny/library/farticles.html for denser stuff. recommended if you want to be at the nerd lvl.

i'd stay away from most crossfit stuff, though you might find something of value if you look hard enough.

most males above their early teens have a lot of difficulty with flexibility, so that might be a place where you'd be stuck at for a while.otherwise i'd say start with hang power cleans and see where you go from there.
