    Attention people!

We are now standing on what is known as one of the most iconic landmarks of an early 20th century style of architecture called the Amsterdam School. Bridge 283, as it is usually referred to, connects the Binnen Bantammerstraat with the Buiten Bantammerstraat across the Kromme Waal. It was designed in 1913 by Jan van der Mey, one of the most prominent advocates of the Amsterdam School together with Berlage, Kramer and Cuypers. Notice how he managed to create a subtle three-dimensional illusion when focussing on the water through the patterns in the bridge's iron ornaments. Van der Meyde is also responsible for the adjacent Scheepvaarthuis which has recently been restored to its original state to host the Amrath, a five star luxury hotel.

In the background, we see the Montelbaanstoren. It was built in 1512 as part of the city's second generation wall of defense after the city grew, making the old city boundaries obsolete. It was initially used as a station for city guards overlooking the plains and water beyond the walls. Added a near century later, the upper part of the tower houses clocks with church bells. For years the tower clocks have had the odd habit of ringing the bells at random intervals, earning the tower the nickname "Malle Jan" (Crazy Jan). The tower can be seen in many of Rembrandt's paintings - either as a leading object or in the background.

    Let's move on, shall we?

  3. I would have no problems with traveling to Thailand. My only worry would be that they shut down airports, because I wouldn't want to get stuck. I'm convinced Bangkok is perfectly safe, unless you decide to partake in protests/clashes. From what I can gather people are still going to work and living life as usual, so what's the big deal?
