  1. folks - my dad has a vintage rolex that he hardly wears anymore due to the crystal being scratched up. i'd like to get it replaced for him as well as give the watch a cleaning and tuneup. i'm located in NYC and don't want to pay an arm and a leg, but would like to bring it to someone reputable that can be vouched for. anyone have a spot they trust?

    thanks in advance.

  2. Not sure if you're from the states, but if you are - did you buy it from the AD, Watchbuys? If so I would contact them first. They may have someone that they can send it to for service stateside... and if it's serious then they can send it back to Sinn in Germany.

Also that might not be a bad idea to pick up a beater watch... I have a Sinn daily wearer too but I would like to buy something that I won't care as much about when I'm doing something active.

fawk, my sinn is running about 5 mins fast per hour after a bit of rough play with my son!! argh.. last time that happened, i let it die and then wound it up again and it was fine. this time, it didn't quite work. should i just send it back to sinn for servicing?

anyways, thinking that i need a more durable watch - time for digital?!? g-shock time.

  3. I went yesterday and found a great wool overcoat. I put it on hold and picked it up today. I dropped $300 on it, which I think is a great investment on a coat that I can wear for a long time. There were some interesting coats from Acne, and a lot of dreadful Nudie clothing (they really need to stop making clothes). I will say there's not a ton of good outerwear options, though, so try to stop by soon.

can anyone report on the Filippa K sale? specifically, outerwear. i need a new winter coat.
  4. a few months ago i posted about my daily wearer - a sinn 656s - and some people wanted to see more pictures. i forgot about the thread until recently, so i took some quick snaps with my point and shoot...

the crystal has an A/R coat which is pretty nice. some people complain that it scratches easily but i've worn mine every day for 7 months now and there's not a scratch on it.

i really like the finishing. their more expensive models have a tegimented finish, which is a process by which the coating is heated to a crazy temperature where it bonds to the casing (thereby making it more durable). the 656s is a sandblasted chrome plated steel casing, which is also pretty resilient but will eventually erode over time like most other pvd watches. i'm ok with that - tool watches ought to look somewhat beat-up anyways. at that point i will hopefully have the funds to invest in a dressier daily wear watch and make this one a weekend casual watch. the watch also comes with a black leather strap but i opted to swap it out for a rubber sinn strap for a more casual look.

  5. corey, those are nice - they made me think of this seiko spirit i had my eye on for a little bit but then decided i just didn't need yet. were i to just run across $300 randomly i'd pick this one up instantly as a nice, simple dressier watch.

yes, this also has a date which omc wasn't looking for, but the face is super clean, it's a mechanical watch, and the cordovan strap is sharp. $300, also at seiya japan. i also personally like the combination of polished and brushed finish on the face. for the price i'm pretty sure it can't be beat.

  6. solebrother - you've got a watch for almost every occasion (i echo someone's sentiment about needing a really nice dressy watch). i unfortunately have to make my one watch work for all situations. great collection you have there.

  7. agreed. i've listened to q-tip's new album "the renaissance" several times since i got it tuesday and i have to say that i'm really impressed. being a long time fan of tip and tribe (as i'm sure most of you are) i have very fond memories associated with listening to him in my younger days. it's refreshing to see him evolve and take pride in his craft after all these years, especially with the daunting task of trying to make something worth buying in an age where bootlegging is so easy. i really encourage people to check it out.

Both Q-Tip and Raphael Saadiq's albums are stunning.

I've been throwing those on for the past 2 weeks. Q-Tip really surprised me, but Raphael did a great job on the production.

  8. skip - i dont think they look bad at all. i personally think a hem would make them look a lot cleaner but thats just me - i know some people like the crazy stacks. these look like a good comfortable relaxed fit... mine were tighter when i first got them but they loosened up to what yours look like now.

  9. just received mine this morning... 13.3" 2.4 -

initial thoughts - i am really impressed with the build quality. it's pretty amazing how they carved the entire bottom half out of a solid block of aluminum and the finish on it is something else. i mentioned earlier that i've been working on a 12" powerbook g4 for the past 3 and a half years so i know that i'll notice the performance bump almost immediately. i'm still transferring files and installing software so i have yet to put it thru its paces but so far, aesthetically i'm very pleased. it's much thinner than i anticipated and it feels very solid in hand.

  10. honestly, i would always choose a prime lens for portraits over a zoom lens. prime lenses are almost always sharper than zooms and most are faster too - having the ability to shoot at a wider aperture will give you that nice depth of field that you'll probably want when shooting portraits (to blur out a distracting background).

I'm thinking of shooting some portraits (headshots) for a friend here at school. I'm gonna use my 55-200 in natural light and do it up on PS. Is this not gonna come out well? I only have a standard 35 and my 55-200, and the 55-200 is a much crisper/clear lens.[/img]
