  1. Hey Talking about all the gore tex technology + heavy rain protection..

Are there any materials/brands that focus on very hot climates? I am currently living in South America, I really love everything Techwear related. But even the summer collections would seem impossible for the south american weather. Any tipps?

I've had good luck with Gore Windstopper as a GoreTex replacement in warm weather. NeoShell is also fantastic - problem is that it hasn't been used much by techwear companies in my experience.

You might be better off buying a PackLite jacket (ACR makes them, so does Arcteryx mainline) and simply not wearing it unless it's completely necessary. Wearing any sort of shell in humid South American weather is going to make you sweat, and bring soaked with sweat kinda negates the point of wearing a shell to keep dry.

  2. This just in :) Actuator jacket. Ended up buying it instead of the Isogon. I live in Sweden ffs, the country of bad weather!! So happy with it!

Nice! Better buy than the Isogon, for sure.

If you tried it on next to the Isogon, do you mind commenting on the fit? I have an Isogon in a small, whereas I'm usually a medium in Veilance. Wondering how to size the Actuator.

  3. I seem to always forget MW makes outerwear.

Anyone have experience with the Eiger Field Jacket?

It's like a Veilance Field Jacket but not quite as good. C_Change instead of ProShell...no thanks.

  4. Don't worry. east dane has XL left for ~$385.

I saw that, but I'm a medium...might be able to get away with a large given it's a slim jacket. I suppose I should have mentioned that.

    Pants look great.

  5. Gore Windstopper is about 95% waterproof. In most cases (if it's clean) it holds up pretty well.

I find the same. In pretty much every scenario I've been in short of extreme weather, I prefer it to GoreTex.

On a deals note, Sporting Life in Toronto has Field Jackets (insulated and not), Partitions (or were they Monitors?), a Subset vest, a Node and a much of blazers on ~30--50% (was just there this past afternoon). Assorted sizes and colours...not full stock my any means, but a decent selection. I cannot proxy at this time, out of town in a few days. Sorry guys! Please buy a bunch of shit so that I can't. Spring/Summer stuff is also in at the moment - only outerwear, no shirts, pants, etc unfortunately.

Speaking of deals, does anyone know where I might find a decent deal on a Mionn Composite Jacket? :)

@frankie_four - Sorry, meant to +1 rep. Really small buttons on the phone.

  6. nope. The surface is not water repelling, due to the texture. So if you are looking for something waterproof you might skip the Composite, too.

I have an Isogon - it has a DWR treatment, and the surface absolutely does repel water. However, the fabric lacks a membrane, so any more water than the DWR can repel will be absorbed into the fabric, whereas GoreTex would stay dry.

I also own a composite jacket, and while the same is true regarding a partial lack of membrane (underarms and back), I find it more than adequately waterproof. I wear it more often than my GoreTex shells, as it strikes a pretty perfect balance between water resistance and breathability.

  7. My girlfriend has been looking for a few ACR pieces - no luck so far so I thought I'd see if any of you can help out. I'm all about her getting into techwear, so I'm hoping I can find her something.

She's looking for an (S)S-CP2F, or a GT-J18F, size small if anyone knows where to look. Thanks :)

  8. Sporting Life in Toronto has marked down all of their Veilance gear in store - most of it is not on the website, at least for now. The discounts aren't massive (~30% off) but they still have pretty much all sizes and colours.

Edit: I only saw FW stuff - I assume they're making room for the SS gear.

  9. Anyone ran into trouble after washing their goretex? How many washes did you do? Washed my field jacket for the 5th time n a little bit of tape is peeling back. When i dry in a dryer i always use the lowest setting but thinkin mb i should air dry more. Supposed to get rain all next week but i gotta send it in :(

I've experienced that once before, but it was after years of wear. Another brand, not Veilance. It shouldn't happen, especially after only 5 washes.

I'd send it in. Arc'teryx will take care of you.

  10. You say that, but then you realize your hiking in like, 2000 dollars of superfluous fashion.

I find the added cost is worth the versatility. And besides, it's not the mainline Arc'teryx stuff is cheap to begin with, which is where I was focused before discovering the things discussed in this thread.

That and I can't afford the really expensive stuff. :)

  11. I'm going to have to call you out here.  If you really didn't care about fashion at all, you'd probably be wearing surplus military junk and TAD gear. The fact that you care to purchase Acronym, Veilance or any other 'techwear' brands clearly shows you care about how others perceive you.  All the clothing on Superfuture is just improved permutations of existing fieldwear, with very little increase in functionality but massive increases in style/fit/form points.  I can pay $50 for a surplus fishtail that'll keep me as warm as a $1,500 Stone Island fishtail, but I (and most of people on here) will admit that we're paying for form/coolness/perception factors more than pure function.

Fashion is just another sort of aesthetic appreciation, so I don't understand how you can say "i don't like fashion" and claim to appreciate (and pay for) the difference between Acronym/Veilance and buying milsurp.  I could even argue that surplus makes more sense functionally. (what do I wear when I'm actually working on dirty, heavy stuff where things can be destroyed or stained? Probably not my $1.2k acronym shell.)

edit: Anyways, I don't mean it as an attack; I'm just curious how you can diverge the fact that we're paying a lot for subjective qualities that are typically found in 'fashionable' things; such as better fit/fabric/form, as opposed to objective qualities that can clearly be differentiated. The clearest example is Arcteryx mainline vs. Arcteryx Veilance; I've taken numerous Arcteryx garments climbing or hiking and the function is just as good as Veilance gear, but I'm still shelling out for Veilance because I love the look and fit.

I think I understand what Brainboy is getting at. My interest in techwear is focused on the technical aspects of the clothing. For me, the enjoyment comes integrating that functionality into a wardrobe I really enjoy wearing. Coming from an active sports background, as someone who was sick of wearing brightly coloured, logo-festooned sports wear, it's nice to discover a subgroup of fashion that emphasizes a combination of performance/functionality and aesthetics, I suppose - aesthetics on their own don't do much for me. The promise of a wardrobe that works for commuting, work and spontaneous exploration/activity is very enticing.

I guess the easiest way to put it is that I'm not one for style in and of itself - hence the interest in techwear.

The nice thing about all this gear is that it's just as easily enjoyed by someone who's interests are the opposite of my own - someone who understands fashion, but has a passing interest in increased performance of their clothing.

  12. I dont think I'd wear it around town, but that looks just incredibly badass for day hikes / climbs where you really don't wanna carry anything at all except bare essentials and still be mobile and not off balanced.

EDIT: Fuck! You guys are enablers... and yea maybe I would wear it around town ^_^.

Yeah I'm struggling with that too. Worth a shot at the very least, it's not too pricey.

Looks like CCP is doing some interesting things with Tyvek. I might pick up a thing or two and report back.
