  1. a lot of inspiration in this thread. here's my typewriter, about 3 years old now. it's a royal typewriter circa 1930s (without the ribbon covers), famously used by writers such as ernest hemingway and tennessee williams.

i received issue #2 of lucky peach for christmas. it's a foodie quarterly journal started by david chang (chef and owner of momofuku). it's pretty great - filled with travel anecdotes, quirky food stuffs, and awesome recipes. it was picked up by mcsweeny's - which makes sense. mcsweenz always picks up great stuff. highly recommended journal & publisher.

  3. haha nice. don't get me wrong, the plastic bottle is the wrong move, and could be indicative to a larger problem. i see what you're saying on the branding - looks like that could be stocked at a 7-11. i've only been to their williamsburg location - so i can't really weigh in on the state of its cafes. drip and espresso were fine in my book, though.

  4. ^^ wow that's a super weird - why would bb do that? any info on what kind of plastic the bottle is made of?

though the new orleans is quite a departure from what i normally drink, it's some of the best ice coffee i've ever tasted. i was totally hooked.

anyone into roasted chicory in their coffee? it works well even if you're not going for a new orleans style - i toss some in (chemex) whenever i'm feeling saucy, or usually when i have a kenya or el salvador on hand. natural sweetness - really brings out those high notes and bright flavors.

  5. @iwmmm - it's the gitman vintage portuguese beefy flannel. one of my favorites - fits true to size but roomy enough to be used as an over shirt.

it's a thick, heavy-weight flannel with a nice fuzzy nap (hence the 'beefy' tag). it's quite a bold shirt and i really dig the contrast color plaid design. the work wear-inspired curved button placket is perhaps it's great subtle details. oversized button down collar with a locker-loop in the back, too. not sure if it's still available anywhere, though.

    here's another look:

  6. bike portage strap from walnut studios. about 2 years old. really dig the touch of leather the strap brings to my daily commute. super functional for my steel frame beater!

had a lot of fun stitching it onto the bike - i chose to do a mexican basketweave stitch.

    custom lettering - yeaaaaaaaaaaah.

and here's the set-up if anyone is interested.

  7. How long is he waits for longman on a busy night? Can you drink at the bar while you wait for a table or is the bar super rammed too?

longman isn't big - so expect to wait at least an hour if not more. the bar will be most definitely packed with regular bar patrons and others waiting. it's worth it, though.

if you're going to L&E for NYE, the whistler is a great cocktail bar. it's a bar/record label/awesome place, and i'm sure you'll dig it there - the mixologists are on par with L&E. but on the way to the whistler, you'll pass the owl (big sign, owl with flashing lights for eyes). it's a 4am and it will be definitely poppin' for new years. i'll probably be making a stop there - maybe not so much what you're looking for but its a good watering hole.

  8. also, cuffs vs. hemming - when the summer comes around, i hear mapz was thinking of turning his into shorts.... we'll see how that goes :)

hahaha damn dude i see how it is. thanks for a throwing a wrench into my big surprise. (don't worry everyone, arc is just being silly). and it's not a "versus" issue. like i said before, the two can co-exist in the same world, you hem nazi.

but yeah it'll be fun to watch the black pairs evolve. glad to hear this is the first "quality" pair of trousers for some - what a pair to be your first!

  9. Hemming is for the weak. Cuffs for life.

what a bunch of baloney. you can still hem and cuff. nothing wrong with some adjustments as long they're done correctly.

edit: it's also an important fix for those of us who aren't graced with long luxurious legs.

  10. this thread is lacking. any coffee lovers out there? even not, whilst traveling to another city, a good thing to always keep in mind - where you'll find a good coffee shop, you'll find a good cross section of the city.

coffee in chicago goes like this:

if you can only visit one shop, go to the intelligensia in the lobby of the monadnock building. old school vibe in one of the oldest buildings in chicago. it's on jackson and dearborn - you'll be in downtown anyway, right?

    in lincoln park?

    the bourgeios pig

    the noble tree

    in lakeview?

    intelligensia

    kickstand

    pick me up cafe

    uncommon ground

    asado coffee

    in wicker park?

    the wormhole

    buzz: killer espresso

    caffe streets

    in logan square?

    cafe mustache

    new wave coffee

    lula cafe

    in west town?

    swim cafe

    sip coffeehouse

    star lounge

    in edgewater/andersonville?

    metropolis

    kopi cafe

    in uptown?

    dollop

local roasters to keep in mind:

    metropolis, intellegensia, bridgeport, dark matter

  11. just treated my billykirk medium carryall. slapped some obenauf's on the leather parts - planning to take some otter wax to the canvas. time between the two pics is about a year. sorry for the lack of detail - camera is og! but really dig the bag, the leather has been aging really nice.

  12. I was about to order some new jeans and didn't really know which ones to get. I am 5'10" and about 165 pounds. Thighs are 22" and calfs are about 14". True waist is 32". I was looking at the APC New Standards, and thinking about getting a size 29, but I was wondering if there were some better options around $200. I want the fit to be skinnyish, but not like extremely tight. This will be my first pair of "real" denim, and was looking to get some nice selvage. I also like the plain look. Not with like crazy designs and stuff. Soooo any thoughts? Kinda a newbie

    Thanks so much.

if you're true is 32, 29 in the new standards will be way too small. but i believe there are better options at the $200 price point. given your desired fit, i would look into a pair of tellasons or rogue territory. also agree with big truck - look into some 3sixteens as well.

  13. @mapz- tellason.... 12.5oz? or 14.75? how do you llike?

12.5 mellors. i'm into slim fits, so they've been perfect for me. mode of transportation around town is by bike, so i'm always worried with the front rise/thigh ratio - given the extra muscle, but after 7-8 months, they've truly come to fit like a glove.

they've been evolving really well (from said biking, etc). they haven't faded as quickly as i thought, but i kind of like that - and the overall quality and finish is that what you'd expect from cone white oak. though i haven't found the time to do a wash yet, i can already see some great hues coming through.

in other words, these won't be my last pair.
