Your best bet will probably be re-doing the hem since it's for a formal setting. If it wasn't, I'd say to just sew similar fabric onto the hem and call it good. there's probably enough extra on the hem for you to fix it, you'll need the inch or whatever + some allowance to sew it comfortably.

Julz's story reminded me of something similar that happened to me this summer. I was working returns and a guy came in with 4 full bags of clothes, and the conversation went something like this:

Me: Was there anything wrong with the clothes?

Him: Nope, just want to return them

(I just start scanning stuff in silence like normal)

Him: Yeah, it was for a family friend that was moving into a retirement home. But then he passed away.

Him: No no, it's fine (starts to get choked up)

Me: (scan things as fast as I can in silence)

Then it basically happened again a few weeks later with a woman:

Her: I'm returning these adult diapers because my dad passed away and we have no use for them

Me: K, I can give you a gift card since you don't have a receipt.

Her: I want cash so I can put it toward his funeral.

Me: Sorry, I can't do that.

Her: I guess I'll just...buy stuff...for the wake...(starts tearing up)

Me: Ok, here's your giftcard

Turns out when i went to send in the information the other day i found some users who i hadn't heard back from/couldn't tell if they'd received my messages. i'm touching base with those people and waiting for a response, but I'm aiming for a tuesday or wednesday at the latest order submission. sorry this has taken a super long time, i intended for this to be over way before now :/

Once I sent everything in it took about 6 1/2 weeks I think...maybe 7, don't remember

Oh we've had enough black ones for awhile, it was the overwhelming majority.

Dunno about shrinkage/stretching (I buy my hats on the looser side so I don't have to worry), hopefully someone else can help you

K heard back from him today. We have the option of having wool underbrims in any color they can make hats in. I think tonal bills would look great but that's just me. What do you all think?

Wool should be their standard thicker wool.

We're now at 19 navy, I'm going to hit up people who said they were down for either and see if that bumps it up. So disregard the last paragraph of my last post, since I'd much rather wait a little longer so we can do both runs at this point now.

So yeah, Ebbets guy disappeared, haven't heard back from him yet. Orders have trailed off so I'm gonna give it a couple more days (basically until Ebbets emails me back) and then start hitting people up with their totals and my paypal address.

We're for sure doing black, but there's 16 navy orders currently. I want to give people the option of switching to black or staying navy and holding out longer to get to 24.

The only problem with that is some people ordered one of each color. If you wait for navy, you'll get charged the drop fee + full shipping on the navy hat instead of combined shipping. For those members in that situation I'll just confirm what you want to do through PM.
