  1. what the hell your still going on about this? your idea sucks.

what the fuck does bumping a thread have to do with photojournalism?

wish i could neg rep you again

Bumping the thread has nothing to do with photojournalism, the concept is for an exhibition + something that actually has to do with fashion, hence posting the pics here. I figured id drop them randomly to get some feedback but no one seems to understand. Maybe thats a good thing.

Anyway its obvious this thread is going nowhere sooooooo im out

  2. Im not reappropriating the purpose of photojournalism, im simply using it beyond the classical boundaries. The basic purpose of spreading information and awareness still holds true for the images and my future plans for the BUMP! concept.

I dont see how these images would help with the online selling my boots (that was my girls major point, that people would think its inappropriate and get wierded out hurting the sale), it was just that the concept came to me when I had to bump the FS thread so I figured id take it live and possibly get some feedback.

I dont think that photojournalism has to be limited to traditional news outlets, various vehicles can be used to convey the information.

As for taking the image out of its original context, well thats a general problem with photography. As soon as the image is captured and published it is out of context.

  3. M8 is a little more than a bit more cash. I think if any of us COULD, we would grab one in a heart beat. :)

I would agree on the film cameras, with two caveats. First, unless you have your own development studio or access to one, you're at the mercy of the film developer, especially with color film. Second, for any beginner the best part about digital is that you have instant feedback, often even with some handy info like exposure histograms or whatever.

Also, the guy bashing the Ricohs eventually gave up. In the end it seemed like any setup not exactly like his DSLR was "wrong", which is never the case. I mean even those broken down plastic Lomo cameras make interesting shots...

For film if you have a dark bag and a bathroom the actual studio isnt the problem so much as most people dont want to take the effort to learn how to do it properly. Everyone loves instant feedback but based on my personal experience id say that often people who start with film learn from their mistakes more quickly while people that start with digital will often just end up with 10x more pics and 10x more crap.

Yeah the Ricohs are great, if they could stick a decent aps chip in a grd and give me a gr35d and a gr50d as well id be set for a loooong time. Well, at least until they managed to squeeze in a 24x36 chip. Nothing compares to all mechanical controls but for compacts the Ricohs are damn fast in operation.

  4. I was looking to judge opinion and create a discourse based on my experience posting the first pic. If everyones opinion was negative then I wouldnt waste my time here as I have plans for further projects along the same path.

I didnt know how rep worked here and thought it was a serious thing and made this thread to see if the photo concept was majorly out of line on SuFu for some reason and what people thought of it. It was explained to me like rep was ebay feedback by the guy I copped my FlatHeads from so I thought it was like having -27 feedback on ebay and I seriously violated some SuFu rules or some shit with the BUMP! idea but now I see thats not how it works.

Fuck, it aint a cover up for anything.

  5. Infact I have 3. I guess I overestimated the conversational aptitude of the average Superfuturer, I thought it might be possible to have a chat about the societal functions and boundaries of various genre and forms of visual communication but instead I just get contacted privately by a bunch of hypocrites continuously bitching about my bitching. I now know to keep the discussion along the lines of "yo dem jawnz is lookin sick. no homo.".

  6. Yeah it was apparently a Serb protester that died. There were no bombs set off in Belgrade in Feb and no US personnel inside the embassy during the demonstration turned riot, just angry people throwing rocks and lighting fires. The embassy was open the next week. Besides this incident Belgrade was very safe the entire time I was there and although Kosovo is a little bit more dodgy in the ethnically mixed areas, the Albanians love Americans. During my stay the UN compound in Mitrovica had some explosive devices thrown in but it was at night while the offices were empty, border posts were burned a couple of times with no major security breeches and a few months earlier in a small mountain village in the south of Kosovo ethnic Albanians bombed a bank with ties to Serbia, again at night when it was empty. Small sporadic attacks mostly as statements with relatively light damage. It probably sounds worse than it is, I met plenty of people just backpacking around in Belgrade and more tourists than I expected in Kosovo although the majority of the internationals are diplomats, security forces or journalists.

On a different topic, which airline gave you that Goldstar? I dont think ive ever seen that shit outside of Israel!

  7. I was covering Kosovos progression from province to statehood and the following Serbian backlash. Also did some small reportages on the provinces ethnic minority groups and spent a boring few weeks covering the Serbian elections and runoffs. Besides that I mostly drank lots of Raki and enjoyed the rainy balkan weather :)

  8. Thanks for the link but I dont really care to appeal the neg rep... I posted in superculture because I was more hoping to get a conversation going along the lines of the variability of classically accepted usages of journalism/documentary photography in society. Also when I made the thread I hadnt fully figured out how rep worked so I thought the mofo neg repped me 27 seperate times. Whatever, its 5am

  9. I really wanted to go to Belgrade. But with the bombing of the US embassy, it's not the greatest time. I was talking to an Italian girl who is living in Belgrade right now, and she said her friend (American) was trying to get across the border, and the customs officers said that there is no embassy to guarantee the safety of Americans, not to say that would really make a difference, but that might be a bit of a moot point now. Maybe next year. I hear Belgrade is a fantastic city

Hey im a US citizen too and you really dont have to worry, I was around for 2.5 months before and 3.5 months after Kosovo's declaration of independence and Belgrade is definitely safe now but be alert and use common sense in North Mitrovica any of the Serbian enclaves/IDP camps in Kosovo. Im not sure when your friends info is from but the US Embassy should be functioning normally. There was never any bombing but the embassy was closed for a few days in February after the riots. The media sensationalizes the current situation but being there is quite boring if youre expecting some sort of action and comfortingly calm if youre looking to avoid it. Worst comes to worst just dont say youre American ;). Would be a shame to visit the Balkans and miss it!

  10. Be careful those bastards have some sort of time limit on the VATback though. I went to the desk in Heathrow with a pile of VAT slips after living in London for a year and the guy wasnt havin it. Im sure I could have gotten some money back if I had handled it differently but we ended up getting in a fight and my girl had to pull me away lest I get arrested and we miss our flight to India. C'est la vie. As long as youre only staying for a few weeks you should be fine, just make sure to ask for the VAT slips as the store clerks wont give you the heads up one something that requires them to fill out more paperwork. Enjoy your trip, Paris has a lot to offer

  11. Hey looks like a good trip man! I just got back from 6 months in the Balkans, nearly all in Kosovo and Serbia except for a trip to Skopje to get a Macedonian stamp so I could cross the Serbian border for the first time (flew into Pristina and the Serbs dont recognize the UN stamps as being valid) and a journey through Croatia and Slovenia by bus when I got deported. You should hit up Belgrade if you can, great city.

  12. Right now id definitely go for the Sigma DP1. Color shots in artificial light at/above 400 iso often fall apart with the nasty Foveon color blotches but you can crank up the ISO in B&W and basically there is no other fixed lens digital that lets you control depth of field like that. Im waiting for Photokina but if nothing significant drops ill cop a DP1 or two.

In terms of user interface the Ricoh GRD rules all pocket cams. Whatever guy was bitching before about the GRD being for hipsters that dont care about image quality/noisy pics has no idea what hes talking about and probably just read some consumer digest report on how the measured noise levels were high. The noise is high because they dont reduce it with some crap, second rate, detail smearing in-camera noise reduction algorithm like almost every other compact digital. Thats what makes the PanaLeicas suck, the noise measures low but the fine detail is gone (yes, even in raw).

In terms of little cams ive had the Panasonic LC1 (Leica Digilux 2), Panasonic LX1 (Leica DLux 2), Sony V3, Ricoh GRD, etc and none of them come close to the classic film compacts like the Ricoh GR1, Contax T, etc. Each has one or two things it does well and generally sucks at everything else. Word on the street is that Nikon, Canon and Panasonic are working on APS sensored fixed lens digis so hopefully they drop soon.

If youve got a bit more cash cop the Leica M8. Its a flawed jewl but its the only digital camera that operates properly if youve got the old school flow. I had an Epson RD1 a long time ago and it was decent but its quite a pain in the ass to shoot wide. Used it for one project and sold the mofo.

Anyway film rules so ill be the first asshole to say buy an old film camera and a negative scanner and shoot away.

  13. Damn... I never really dug Evisus because of the douchebaggery often seen rockin 'em but these are looking niiiiice, especially with option of stealth pockets.

Ive heard that the Evisu x Puma and Evisu EU are pretty crap but hows the quality on the 1s and 2s?

  14. Think you may want to review some jean terminology as you sound completely confused.

    1. RRL makes only one model of jeans that are unwashed (aka shrink to fit). IIRC, it's the buckleback model that was released fairly recently.

    2. One wash jeans can be raw. Unwashed jeans are raw. Notice the difference?

If the photos show any kind of fading on the jeans, they're distressed. If they look completely dark and without any marks, creases, fades, holes, etc., then they are raw. And if you look at what I wrote before, if the jeans are raw then you can assume with about 99% certainty that they are also one wash.

    Is that clearer?

wtf? Its all right to share some info but a) you dont have to be condescending and B) If you want to be condescending at least know what youre talking about so you dont look like an idiot. Raw = unwashed. One wash = washed once. Raw ≠ one wash.

  15. I just recently found out about Paul Smith and got a pair of stylin boots last week. I dont like some of his styles but those Paul Smith x BIGs look nice, very close to the measurements I was eyeing for my next pair.... a bit looser without the cuffs falling over the shoes. Damn I wish I was still in nyc
