  1. same will be true here in Boston. The bonus tens of thousands of bandwagon collegiate B's "fans" usually tips the balance of these things towards the out of control....

If the aftermath of the last two WS victories is any measure, it won't be pretty win or lose...

  2. What's crazy is that Tim Thomas probably gets the Conn Smythe even if the Canucks win tonight.

Boston's vibrating right now waiting for the puck to drop... cops on high alert.

  3. I've gone to Old Colony Liquors on the Southern Artery a million times on the way down 3A and it has a pretty good though sometimes random beer selection. Haven't been to Supreme in a million years but I'm dying to track down some Maine Beer Company beers due to reports from friends in Port-town.

  4. i think i have been waiting the best part of ten years in total for the "next" edition.

this makes me a little concerned considering that he has said that there will be two more volumes after Dance with Dragons. By the time he finishes the series and does Season VII of the show, Lena Headey will be like 60....

  5. Just finished Storm of Swords and picked up Feast for Crows but consensus out there is that Feast for Crows is lame compared to the first three volumes. I like having the image of Lena Headey in mind when reading about Cersei. I like having the image of Lena Headey in mind in general, come to think of it.

Some strange decisions on the screenplay but it's just to keep it moving along and not let it get quite as convoluted as the books.

  6. Just got my first EDC fixed blade: a Bark River City Knife in natural micarta. The Loveless City Knife style has always appealed to me and I've sniffed at some really nice Japanese customs built on it. Specs:

    Overall Length: 6.125 Inches

    Blade Length:2.6 Inches

    Blade Steel: CPM154 @ 60rc

Knife comes with a KSF pocket sheath that has a slip for the blade and a card/cash pocket.

This will likely be a "weekend carry" as it would be hard to EDC a fixed blade in the office but interested to give the fixed blade/pocket sheath combo a go. Pics to come.

  7. an awesome set-up would be a case peanut a craftsman 4-way keychain screwdriver and a photon

True. My in-the-pockets set-up lately has been a GEC Northfield #56 (spear point + small pen blade), Quark MiNi 123 and a Leatherman Micra. Light, easy, and non-threatening, but everything I need for 99% of the daily grind.

The traditional slipjoint approach is way less obtrusive in the workplace/day to day world than whipping out even something as tame as a UKPK - which still screams "knife" to many people.

  8. [quote name=

i love orange spydies - i've got an orange military, myself.[/quote]

Yes kicking myself for not getting the Orange Manix 2 sprint run from Cutlery Shoppe. Bad frugality in effect.

I would love to have something built in orange linen micarta. A Loveless style 3" lockback with stainless bolsters and orange micarta would be great.

Sage 4 should be interesting. Supposed to be an Al Mar style front lock with bolsters + Spydie hole. I'd imagine it would have to be micarta or wood to keep with the Al Mar homage theme. Starts to sound like an ideal knife...

  9. You get the 1085 steel? GEC's 1085 is fantastic.

Pretty sure it's 1095 steel. That'll be a big change from the S30V and VG10 I'm used to in terms of care. But I'm psyched to watch it develop a patina. Hopefully it'll come sharp out of the box (or tube, as it were). Dull new blades seem to be a common complaint with GEC stuff.

The GEC lineup is out of control. I had a snakewood #56 clip point in my cart like 3 times 'til I went for the ebony spear. The #72 mini lockback in wharncliffe blade is awesome looking. If I'd been able to find one in a scale material I wanted that might have wound up in the cart too.

Thinking about putting my Spyderco Urban Wharnie up for sale. The orange G10 is indigo stained so SF might be the only place in the world where I'll find a taker....

  10. Decided to take my EDC knife in a different direction. Usually carry an orange UKPK leaf blade or an orange Wharncliffe Urban... but just ordered my first traditional style slipjoint: a GEC Northfield #56 Spear Point in Ebony. WIll post pics when it arrives.

Anyone else EDC a traditional slippie instead of the more tactical/modern styles? I'm also interested in referrals to custom traditional slipjoint makers if anyone has a recommendation.

  11. Putting in Day 1 on my 700J's. It's a little bit of a strange cut -- went TTS at 36" (and they came in very hard one-washed at 34" or so to start but have already stretched in the waist by 1.5") but everywhere else (thighs, crotch etc.) they're almost baggy like Carhatt work pants, esp. with the low slung front pocket openings.

Have to wait and see how they settle in . . . but I like the cut on my 800's so much (sz 34 with about 6-7 months actual wear) that I'm going to have a hard time putting them aside to work on these...

  12. My 700Js arrived last night and I like the fit. Tagged 36x34 -- measured waist at 34 -- which is snug as hell for me in the waist but the legs and arse are good. Didn't measure the rise but it felt shorter than I thought it would be. My 800s (which are tagged 34x34) started at measured waist of 34" and easily stretched to their current 36". But it seems that the 700Js either shrank from tagged or got a super hot and hard one wash to get that much shrinkage.

The 700Js seem to have a lot more intentional imperfections than the 800s. Pockets are crooked, back and watch pocket stitching wanders from its intended line. By all accounts, WH means to do that, but it's interesting to discover.

  13. Fantastic. Just got 36x34's for $139.99. Been wearing 34x34 WH 800 for the last year and a half (5-6 months actual) so these will be a nice addition. I'm a fatty, so I had to stretch the 34's to 36 and I never wash them. They were ball-bustingly small when I started them. Kinda interesting to start with something that fits.... thanks for the head's up.

[Edit: They're all gone already. Glad I got in there fast.]

  14. Didn't keep em long though, had the sole come apart a little so I ended up returning them. Sorry, no more pics. Great boots though.

I wouldn't be suprised if my Aviators were the ones you returned. I got them at the Orvis tent sale thinking they were new without box or a floor sample. They were ridiculously cheap. Haven't noticed any problem with the sole though.

As to sizing -- mine are 9's (i.e., true to size). They fit great. I go half down on Barrie last, and true to size on other Alden dress lasts (Hampton, Plaza etc.) Hadn't previously owned anything in Trubalance last.

I'm wearing mid-weight socks in these though. In dress socks, could probably go down a half size, but I don't usually wear dress socks with boots...

  15. My Orvis x Alden Aviators tried to kill me in the 1-2" dusting we have in Boston. I'm amazed by how slippery the Alden composite soles (same as the Indy's sole) are in snow. Anything to be done short of a resole to increase traction?

These things need hobnails if you want to wear them in winter. . .

  16. Any info on Ian Harold boots around here???? No aussies around?

Wearing my Ian Harold Gardeners today. Brumby bullhide leather. Chelsea work boot, with glued, screwed and stitched composite sole, and bullhide leather flaps that cover the gussets. Fit similar to RM Williams "H" fittings (basically you can size down 1 from U.S. and they'll be kinda wide). Tough boots -- little rougher build than the RMW Yard boot, which would be it's closest competitor (and which I wear almost every day in the winter).

There are pics of someone else's somewhere way up-thread.

  17. Max blade length in Boston is 2.5" -- so Dragonfly works. I really liked my G10 Dragonfly -- until I lost it out of my back pocket clearing brush up in VT couple weeks ago. I chose an orange Urban Wharncliffe to replace it -- also a good option if you aren't wedded to a lock. Blade at 2 9/16" is close enough to 2.5" that I don't think it would cause you problems.

But yeah, the g10 Dragonfly is one of my favorite Spyercos. Super-solid feel in a small package.

  18. maybe the turnout comfort or yard boot.

RMW Yard Boots are incredible. I wore mine daily for nearly three winters -- they hold up. Sizing is a huge pain in the a$$ tho. The standard refrain to "size down one from your US street shoe" is totally off, at least for me. Sizing down one netted me a very very snug fit -- was stuck wearing thin dress socks where I would preferred to be able to wear a medium weight sock. Essentially, they run shorter than just "U.S. Size minus one," and I found don't run as wide as the massive SF thread on them suggests.

If you can try 'em on first, by all means do.

  19. Any Manix 2 users out there? I've carried a Foliage Green G10/VG-10 Dragonfly daily for six months and it's perfect to always have on hand, but I need something with a little more oomph from time to time. I'm looking at the Manix 2 or the Foliage Green G10/FFG VG-10 Delica -- but think that's probably too similar to the Dragonfly.

The standard Manix 2 looks like incredible value.

  20. Memorial Day weekend Southern VT I snagged NWOT Orvis x Alden Aviator boots @ 60% off at the Orvis tent sale in Manchester VT. TruBalance last plain toe oiled nubuck. Will try to post pics but these are exactly what I had been looking for for a while.

There were a bunch of Aldens and Gokeys on the tables in various sizes, they might turn up in the Orvis Outlet store in Manchester at deep discounts . . .
