  1. I think that it gets really easy to call out Levis for a myriad of reasons – one being the lawsuits. But when talking about LVC, some of the posters tend to forget that we live in a post-modern world and one thing that demonstrates this post-modern paradigm is reproduction jeans. It’s sort of like bitching about a hip-hop artist that samples a song you like because he didn’t play the whole riff or the rap wasn’t in keeping with the original intent of the song. True, Levis has chosen to meticulously reproduce some models and only chosen to capture the essence of other (’47). It’s a fashion line. No one at Levis has ever claimed that the line was designed to be a museum-quality reproduction (no one I know of).

(In all fairness, I understand comparing and contrasting one brand to another and the fact that one might prefer certain qualities of say the Levis JP over the domestic line – I’m not calling out any particular poster)

The same goes for people that bitch about people wearing work wear, but not doing manual labor. It’s a post-modern world. You get to write all the rules.

As Paul T has pointed out, LVC is really a labor of love for everyone involved – from Cone to corporate. LVC offers, IMO, the most bang for the buck in the repro game.

And since I’ve taken up so much space, one last thing: $300 worth of 501 STF will last you longer than one single pair of $300 jeans. Stop pretending that we buy this shit because it is of such superior quality. We pay top dollar for this shit because we are collectors looking for the unique and rare – it’s a hobby, like fly fishing or cars or whatever else men of a certain age waste their hard-earned time and money on. In fact, as a fly fisherman, denim sometimes seems like a pretty affordable hobby.

  2. yea the RAB scene has a lot of sub-tribes within it. Some guys are more into the cars, others are more into the vintage clothes (hepcats), others are into the 50s pop culture aspect, and plenty more just like the image associated with it but arent necessarily as hardcore. The old RAB forums always had arguments of being "more rockabilly than you" which got really tiring since everyone was simultaneously correct in one aspect, and totally full of shit on another.

This is on of the few reasons why I am glad I grew up in a small town. I was really able to enjoy Rockabilly, music and clothes, without all the rules. I mean, it was me hanging with five heavy-metal guys a gutter punk and a few hippies -- no one was calling bullshit on my authenticity -- it was mostly just calling a lot of bullshit in general. In fact, I think the Rockabilly Rulebook really turns a lot of people off to the scene. But, maybe it also keeps it from blowing up like Pop-Punk and Grunge.

  3. 9:21 a.m: Drinking bitter-ass work coffee while my wife is at home drinking Kona, which was flown in last night with a buddy, from the French press. That'll teach me to sleep in.

  4. And definitely block the ex, scott. Much as I wish my ex and I were still in contact it was the right thing for me to delete her number from my phone and remove her from facebook.

Amen, Facebook is a little too much. Some girl you finger fucked when you were 19 should not be able to peek in on your life today.

  5. Triple cert Italian roast and a slice of homemade coconut cake.

Now, I'm not one to tell another how to live their life; but if any of you fellas decide to link yourself permanently, or even semi-permanently, to a sexual partner, make sure he or she can bake. You'd be surprised how many flaws are compensated for by well-made baked goods.

The birthday brought me a bottle of this stuff. Finally got around to drinking it again last night. Great stuff. Very nice neat. Nicer with a little ice.

  7. Go For The Lvc 47, Bec Sugarcane Is A Copycatter From Levis Even Though They Master The Art Of Making Denim They Still "stole" Those Ideas From Levis. Haha.

    Yes and no.

The bigger question is, "what do you want." If you are some history preservationist that is trying to sartorially capture a certain time and place, go with the LVC -- it is LEVIS, afterall (but I would size down a '55 in that case, per Paul T's suggestion, or go for a Lee jean). However, if you are a denimhead that is looking for rare denim to add to your collection, go for the Sugar Canes.

  8. For what it's worth, my mother-in-law is a drug addict and it is ridiculously difficult to have a meaningful relationship with her. The addiction has really flared up in the last five years, so I knew her when things were "normal." It's heartbreaking to remember how things were vs. how they are today. In my experience with addicts, as that disease progresses it becomes very hard to have a meaningful relationship. Their soul is dying very slowly.

  9. If Type-2 Diabetes kept Americans from working, nothing would get done in Texas, Missouri or Alabama. In fact, 24 stones is the average weight of longhaul truck drivers, middle-school band teachers, and Wal-Mart employees in the USA.

  10. Depending on the breakfast, chicory and coffee can be quit nice. It does have certain flavor qualities normally associated with "cheap" or "burnt" coffee. Not something I drink black, however. I usually do it half milk and half coffee/chicory blend.

  11. The music got me into the clothes.

In fact, a Rockabilly song pretty much changed the course of my life – for better or worse. In the summer of 1990 I heard Social Distortion’s cover of ‘Ring of Fire’ while sitting on Mick Rush’s trampoline – paradigm shift. (Now, I know that Social D isn’t considered by most a true rockabilly band and ‘Ring of Fire’ isn’t one of Johnny Cash’s rockabilly songs, but that’s where I started – gateway drugs if you will).

Before that moment tattoos were dirty things my dad’s step-dad regrettably got when he was in the marines, Johnny Cash was a silly country singer as well as Les Paul, 501s were stoner jeans and a new Z28 was cool.
