Is a Large equal to like a Lacoste 5? Or a Ralph Lauren L? Do I need to size up/down?

I'm looking to buy a Fred Perry X cdg, but have no idea about the size. Is a Large cdgxfp about a 5 in Lacoste or is it imore like a L Ralph Lauren polo? Anyone can help me?
