  1. Wrangler apparently opened a showroom on the Kings Road around 1968 and that's where he bought it from, around the time they were recording the White Album - I don't think there's any chance you could have got hold of a Maverick in the UK in the 60s.

Of course Lennon would have had the celebrity status needed to secure something kinky and had of course been stateside by then (and been a denim fan since Hamburg).

I wonder if a previous photo exists with it in a less worn/aged state a year or two earlier? (I'll be looking!).

Rubber Soul (Released December 1965) sees the Beatles in denim (reverse of the sleeve has a 'cowboy' George).

Help sees them in their Lees - the reissued 101 jeans and jacket has the gear as '1966' but the Swedish promo shot is from the fliming of Help on Providence Island in the Bahamas http://beatleshelp.50megs.com/photos/agsteps1.jpg (the actual Lee Sweden shot is from the day they filmed the sequence for 'Another Girl') - this was in Feb 1965, but I digress!

It's possible they had grabbed a load of gear in the US - ergo the dating of any UK availability may be a red herring - what sort of time frame we looking at the help us further?

He could have cut the buckles off the rear as well...

(apologies if I'm enjoying this more than I should).

  2. another detail is that the jacket he wears does not have a waist buckle adjuster, wich both jackets have. just a detail, maybe a sound a bit anal about it, but u wanted to know . anyway both the wrangler and the maverick are nice jackets

It's not possible to be 'too' anal about the Beatles :-)

The solution will be a trawl through the Anthology DVD methinks. Now I have a better idea what I am looking for (ie the differences between the jackets) I'll have a peek...

  3. hows the fit - slim or standard? i've been looking for a nice slim fit denim jacket for a while. also are the sleeves longer than normal, cause im a tall/long guy, so long sleeves for cuffing would be awesome.

I went large - normally buy a 42" chest to 'fit' and it buttons up fine without being at all baggy. I'd say slim rather than standard but am in no way experienced re the cuts of other styles/brands.

You're in luck on the sleeves, mine are a touch too long and my arms normally are long enough for 'normal' fitting stuff (NB not a big denim buyer thus far so this is based on G9's etc).

One warm soak for an hour and it's still very starchy and ready to start being worked on.

Hope that helps! Can post some snaps of it once-soaked and left to dry if that'll help?

  4. Don't really get a good shot of the details of it. Could it be just a type 2? Do you see pleats close to the placket?

I was sure it was a Type 2 - but we have solved it using the Stones' R&R Circus clip and Paul T's mighty tome!

  5. I believe it is a 50's Wrangler jacket - you can clearly see that there are pleats along the back of the shoulder area - unlike a Levi's 507xx. Also, Lennon's jacket clearly has a double pleat along the front - Levi jackets only have a single pleat. I think he is wearing the same jacket in this video:

Here is a photo, I believe the model is called 111MJ:

Great shot - that's the one.

Solved as Paul T's book landed after I posted and he confirms.

Lennon later went for a Type III Levis (in the "New York City" phase.

    PS it's "11MJ".

  6. I have a scary amount of Beatles stuff here (ie films / books / bootlegs).

I'm going to go through and pull some pics and sling them in this thread - it seems it would be mildly entertaining but shout loud and fast if that's a waste of the resources and maybe I'll not bother posting ;-)

AM after Lennon's "instant karma' Levis jacket (type and wash) so the research needs doing anyhow ;-)

My 1966 101j arrived this morning (Triads) - bought large, jacket fine fine, sleeves a good cuff too long though. Will one-wash the starch out and then break the thing in without too many washes. Shame there was no booklet etc in the box either about the jacket or the Beatles link (although I knew that wasn't going to be allowed and in there).

  7. well i wrote oipolloi about the 101j jacket.and they put up a size chart because the sizes usually are different from the tag size. so they are really helpfull.

about the picture they said they dont really know and lee japan is not allowed to use the beatles pic for legal reasons. so i guess we will never know.

even paulT wrote me he does not know of such a pic, and since he wrote a beatles book ( wich i recommend highly) he must know. so it will stay a mistery.

The pic was used by Lee Sweden as mentioned elsewhere and Lee Carnaby St told me they were not allowed to promote the Beatles link - but if you want to see the Beatles in action in the denim check out the movie Help! - lots of shots.

    Harrison's are bleached!

  8. 55s are cut very much like origianl 55s 47s are very trim. My 47s were tagged 38 waist but were 37 when raw. 35 after full shrinkage. I never liked tthe 47s much really like my 55s though.

"After full shrinkage"... is that after a few washes and when shrinking had had it's way, or after one 'session'?

After a 31" waist post-shrink from some 47 Dry 501's and not sure what to pop for - will shrink in a warm bath hoping to get snug fit that isn't 'too' small.

    Cheers.
